Shomin Sample is a light novel adaptation by Takafumi Nanatsuki.

Bronze.

This harem anime is very entertaining and has a slightly different plot to most which I come across. Plus the main character isn’t a complete pervert. He likes girl’s thighs but most of the time it’s not obvious. Even when the other parts are on show, they don’t really evoke more than embarrassment from the Mc during the inevitable ecchi moments.

The basic plot of the anime is, there is an extremely rich school for just girls where no males are allowed. Except people have realised that it doesn’t exactly prepare the girls for after school, so they decide to kidnap a normal foreigner  to help ‘prepare’ them. Only to protect their purity, they pick a ‘raging homosexual who has a muscleman fetish’. Don’t we all love our best friends? XD So Kimito has a suffer through pretending to be gay or be castrated.

original.jpg

Something which is kind of hard when he is surrounded by beautiful girls who are very naive and innocent. Half the situations which happen are through no fault of his own. But he is well prepared with a collection of muscle-bound videos and other things to show the head maid when she suspects he is not as gay as he ‘claims’.

There are 4 main ‘interests’. Though the loli type in this one, Haruo, is barely acknowledged as more than pretty. Kimito generally treats her the age she acts and looks, like a child. My main issue with her is the face she strips when she’s doing maths, which is pretty often. The anime does a good job of censoring but it’s still a little uncomfortable.

shomin-3The other three are a well-refined blonde, Reiko, a shy but brash and honest red head, Aika, and a slightly violent but cute sword girl, Karin. They all have their own personalities and are pretty oblivious to the world around.

The plot is pretty good. The girls learn about the outside world and antics ensure. The school does have a slightly darker side, however. It is basically a finishing school where parents of boys can find ‘appropriate’ wives for their sons. The finale looked to be built up to be really good and then it happened and it left me feeling a little disappointed.

We went from a mostly normal story (antics of people with too much money aside) to magic powers and super tech within seconds. Then the confrontation was just a disappointment. After Kimito makes his point, the ‘enemy’ just backs down so easily it’s a little embarrassing. Unfortunately, this was enough to knock it down from a silver to a bronze.

I do not stand for bad endings. If you have made me watch 12 episodes, make the ending a good one!shomin-2

Yuri Kuma Arashi was an original anime project written by  Kunihiko Ikuhara, though the manga written for it was published before the anime was released.

In the beginning we hated you so

In the beginning we must have loved you to

And so we wanted to become true friends with you. To cross the wall

I’m not really sure how I am meant to feel about this anime. I guess a silver? I’m not likely to forget the plot and I think I enjoyed it. It’s very surreal. Like a strange cross between xxxholic and utena. With added Yuri, cannibalism and less guys.  This is a story is about the love and bonds we share and how the world likes to destroy those bounds. I called it cannibalism however its bears eating humans, admittedly disguised as humans but still the same.kuma 3

We don’t really see any blood, but this anime is definitely NSFW. Containing a lot of suggestive scenes. Even in the opening there are a few moments of ummmm. Toe biting? Yuri in genre is not a genre I enjoy, and it was only because of my weekly challenge that I watched this. That and the artwork is not moe and has decent proportions. Unlike most things Silver link makes – thank god! I do have a limit with ecchi stuff and the appearance of the characters. Not to stay the artwork is pretty. Its very shoujo, almost CLAMP like. Big round eyes and long legs and bodies. kuma 2The story is one with twists and deep symbolic meanings. This story is laced with symbolism and if you think this anime is as simple of bears wanting to eat humans, you would be wrong. If anything the idea of an ‘invisible storm’ is proof of this. Those who don’t fit in and conform to society’s ideas are excluded from the herd and left to be eaten by the bears. Not literally from the school, but rather from the herd’s events etc. Sound familiar? Just think of your own friends who are LGBT or simply not the standard model, how much they have to face from people. Society is not forgiving to those who stick out.

kuma 4

Love is more times than not in anime over sexualised. It’s refreshing to see any anime about love being more true and honest. Kureha is in love with Sumika. Even after she dies, she is determined to not spoilt that love, or friendship. Declaring for a while afterwards that she doesn’t want to make any more friends. Sumika is her only friend. Not that it doesn’t stop the others from trying. The storm taking more than one form once someone has been removed.

kuma 5

The bears, for reason of their own, wish to protect Kureha. Because one loves her due to the kindness showed to her once she was young. Refusing to give up on love. Eating girls who become a threat to Kureha, Jealousy. Love. Determination. Also lost chances. This anime covers the complexness which is love while keeping it sweet and innocent. For the most. But not only love itself but the fight people have to face against society’s view of their love. How people choose to get in the way of love. Because they don’t agree with it, or because they want it themselves.

Basically, this anime is deep. Very deep. With hidden means and a fantastic story line. Don’t be put off my the fact it is yuri or the fact it is surreal. It is a gem in the dust which likely deserved more attention that it got.

‘Is your love true?”

“Will you eat humans, or will you become invisible?”

So many deep references I’m not going to even begin because you could write papers on this anime!

For people who enjoyed this, I would recommend Utena. I did some researching and it turns out they are both directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara which explains the similar feelings between the two.

Sankarea is a manga adaptation originally written by Mitsuru Hattori.

Put until the last two episodes, I was going to put this as silver maybe even a gold if the ending matching up the the beginning, but the ending spoiled this anime to me. Basically the ending was weak. It was not bad romance because just the anticlimactic-ness of it all. If I’m honest, the fact we had two random episodes about minor characters instead of the main plot line was already counting against it. While one explained a bit of the emotions of the one of the main-ish character, the other was just plain filler. As was the last episode. Nothing to the plot, other than an excuse to have fireworks so the main characters could hopefully could reveal their feeling for each other. And fail. As the anime trope goes. Though the final bit was certainly not a normal trope.

This anime is different. The premise being familiar but new in anime form. A human boy falls in love with a zombie girl. Except it more, he falls in love with a girl who then becomes a zombie. What I liked about this anime was that it had a strong beginning. The characters were well introduced, as was the story. A boy obsessed with zombies is trying to work out how to resurrect his dead pet when a beautiful girl stumbles on him. A girl with a dark family life. Who he then promises that if she ever becomes a zombie, he’ll look after her. Not for one moment thinking it will actually happen.

Sankarea 01

Aka, her father is obsessed with her. Beyond unhealthy levels. Much to her mothers unhappiness. We know at the end of the first episode this girl is destined to return to him as a zombie but it is a few episodes before that occurs. Instead we watch as her father tries to control her while she sneaks out to met with him. When she finally dies, we watch something as she arises from the dead. Not that it stops her fathers obsession at all. hadena-sankarea-03-10bit720p72e36eea-mkv_snapshot_21-58_2012-06-24_13-33-27

I did like the symbolism in this anime. In Japan there is a strong connection between hydrangeas and death. Beautfiul flowers which have a dark meaning in Japanese culture. That they could bring someone back to life was a cool idea. The idea to make it so they could preserve zombies and let them life longer before turning feral was ok. It makes sense, if they are the key ingredient that a supply of them is needed to remain alive but it seemed to be missing something. Not that the story would have been better if Rea had been fighting the desire to eat flesh.sankarea-06-40

The thing which really disappointed me about this anime was the ending with the father. This guy is a real sicko. Claiming to be protecting his daughter’s purity. They go though this whole build up of him kidnapping them both and dramatic revelations. And then nothing. Barely a fight, and then he just accepts what they want. This is a guy who paid for people to follow and kidnap his daughter and her friend and he just… lets her stay with him? I don’t know what I expected but something a bit more dramatic/interesting than that!

If someone was the ask me about this anime I’d properly tell them to give it a go. But I’m not likely to recommend it of the tip of my head. It had a really interesting premise and a good if not twisted story built around it but while it passed barely on the romance side, the other aspects failed to satisfy when could have been. This anime could have been so good. But it failed to deliver. So Bronze

This anime is a spin off from a video game.

I loved this anime. Its funny and has an excellent story. The world as three types of people. Human, Animal and Hybrid. The three races fighting for supremacy over the others. In various parts of the world, different people are in power and we see a lot of themes around slavery and people’s rights as we go though the show. As our travel from country to country and see the extremes of how people live. For the most, the beastmen have control over the humans. With some places where the human’s have rebelled.

From this a woman stand out amongst the rest. A woman who is travelling, hoping to find the secret to the destruct code. A device which will destroy the world and recreate it a new. She doesn’t want to change the world, she wants to end it and let it start again. An interesting premise and one which the other two in her party have mixed feeling about but go along with her anyway. Because if nothing else, its an adventure.

38349lDon’t get me wrong, most of this anime is your stand action plot. But I really liked the characters and how they interacted with each other. Including the minor characters. The travelling salesman is brilliant and I love him. Everything it at a price, though he isn’t cruel about how you can pay him.

A few people have commented that the first 2/3 of the anime is a bit slow and doesn’t do much for the plot, but it does show you the world they live in and show the bonds they are beginning to form. Something which is important given the twist at the end. After all the destruction code isn’t as far away as the characters first believe.

So Gold from me for entertainment value though I’m not sure how many people will agree.

Ai Yori Aoshi is a manga adaptation originally written by Kou Fumizuki

This anime is not one I remember much to at all, which makes my rating low anyway. I remembered it was about a normal guy who suddenly gets a traditional Japanese wife/fiancée. I didn’t remember they were childhood friends. I also remembered this anime gave me a similar feeling to Chobits/dearS but pretty much nothing else. Oh! Also that he is estranged from his family and thinks this is a set up.

Don’t get me wrong, I properly should re-watch this before reviewing but considering how much I remember of other series I watched at the same time, it doesn’t really give me a good enough incentive to try again. It suggests to me that I didn’t really enjoy this anime, or well, I enjoyed it enough to complete it but not enough to retain much about the story. Give its age and its genre types, its not really the sort of program I would watch now. Maybe in summer I will give it another change but not for the moment.

Sorry any fans of this anime, and I do encourage people to watch it themselves due to my lack of memory but bronze.

Binbougami Ga! is a manga adaptation originally written by Yoshiaki Sukeno.

So this anime is tagged as Parody, though I’m not really sure what it is a parody of. There are a lot of really extreme characters. There are also a lot of references to other animes which are hilarious. A lot to dragonball, to many to others as well, including death note, which is shown below because it was brilliantly done. This anime is happy to make jokes out of itself. Binbou Gami Ga 1A basic summary of this anime is the fri-enemy-ship between a girl who has too much fortune and is a bit of a bitch, and a god of misfortune who has been sent to fix the imbalance. Ichiko is a girl blessed with having too much fortune. To many she seems untouchable and an angel. In reality she’s a arrogant bitch who loves getting her own way and doesn’t really care about other people. Though I do love her, I call her a bitch affectionately in this one. I love animes about girls who are not frail and this anime is it. All three of the female leads are not afraid to throw a punch or say something bluntly.

Ichiko had a bad childhood, a rich heiress whose parents had no time for her and her only real carer was her butler. This with the fact a lot of her friends used her as a child meant she struggles to make friends and only really uses people. So when Momoji crashes into her life, things being to get interesting.

Binbou Gami Ga 4

Momoji is a lazy god of misfortune. Not death. Misfortune. Her job to take the masses of fortune which Ichiko has a redistribute it to people who need it. Except who would want to go near that big ass needle? Not Ichiko, she avoids Momoji’s attempted to steal her fortune easily, occasionally letting it happen to safe people. During the rare moments when she is feeling sympathetic to other people. Not that she ever admits it. Ichiko and Momoji’s relationship is a strange one. They are pretty much best friends. Kind of. They insult each other and beat each other up but their is definitely a fondness there. A fondness between two bitches but it exists. Something which only grows as a third girl is added. The tomboy Rindou. Who was brought up pretty much as a boy by her father.Binbou Gami Ga 2

Momoji’s arrival means that Ichiko has to deal with a lot of madness which comes with her including a perverted black monk, and a m-type inugami. Plus a new friend at show shows up.Theses guys are only really in the show for comedy relieve but their appearances are well done and often the only real ecchi type scenes in the show. Despite the fansercive heavy opening and closing. Along with two classmates with their own problems, we watch as the two girls cause choas and try to defeat each other. While watching Ichiko grow slightly into a more well rounded person. She still has a sharp tongue but she slowly begins to understand other people due to accidents with Momoji’s plans.

I found this series awesome and I fully recommend it to anyone who like comedy programs! Gold.

Hataraku Maou Sama is a light novel adaptation written by Satoshi Wagahara.

I really enjoyed this anime. The art is pretty and the magic well animated. The character designs aren’t that unique or original and pretty much the standard model for a light novel adaptation. Which is a shame, because the story to this anime is really top notch. Sounds clique, is clique, works brilliantly. I definitely recommend this anime. Its hilarious and I love all the characters. All of them, including the minor characters.

We start our story in a magical world where demons are invading. The hero, and half angel, Emilia fights against Satan in order to save the world. Satan and his top general,  end up falling into a magic portal and sent to earth. It becomes clear pretty quickly that magic doesn’t work as well in Tokyo, and the two of them find a place to live and part time jobs before trying to find out more about the world they are in. Satan ends up working at a fictional version of McDonalds (McRonalds) and quickly becomes shift manager as he is very dedicated to his job. Much to the surprise of Emilia, now Yusa, who followed him only to suffer a similar fate of losing her magic and now works at a call centre. Hatagaya Maou San 4This series is fantastic. One of the main issues is that Satan isn’t really very evil. He’s actually quite caring and kind, and often uses the powers in gains from fear to help people or repair the damage done in battles. He’s work working, dedicated and a good friend. Which confuses the hell out of Emilia who has been taught he is evil and will use every excuse to cause pain and suffering. Heck even in their first meeting in the human world (Satan’s demon form is different due to the loss in magic), he gives her an umbrella because of the rain. They strike up a strange friendship, which revolves around her stalking him to make sure he stays good and him being kind to her. And yes they fall in love. But as I stated, this anime is very clique and it works.

Hatagaya Maou San 2

>What I also love about this series is that the big boobed girl, in this case Satan’s work colleague who has a massive crush, isn’t just there for ecchi purposes or fan service. She is an actual part of the story, either as a watcher to the events or as a damsel in distress. But she has a part to play and not the one her character type is normally given. All the characters are well portrayed in this and well developed. We even have Lucifer as a Hikikomori! Yes, i know technically Satan and Lucifer are the same according to Christian lore, but hey, its an anime. You have to take things with a pinch of salt.

Another thing to note is that the ‘church’ in this anime is corrupt and slightly in the grey as to how good or bad it is. There are signs of both as some of the higher ups are very corrupt. It would be interesting for a second season to learn about the world they came from and just how much of Satan’s reputation is the church covering things up. I may invest in the light novels if they have been translated into English. Or maybe in Japanese if I am brave enough.

I give this anime a gold. Maybe a little high for what its worth but personally I really enjoyed this.

Welcome to the NHK is a novel adaptation originally written Tatsuhiko Takimoto.

The closest thing I can compare this too is Catcher in the Rye. By no means do I think this is any where near as good but the themes are similar, if only with a Japanese twist in it. Watching a character which a serious social problem, spiral worse and worse. Sometimes getting better only to regress. The people around him struggling with there own problems. This anime is about the issues everyone faces and a bunch of people who learn to overcome them.

As you can tell, this anime is fairly deep at times. It has moments of funniest, moments of pervertedness, but at the heart, this anime is very realistic in how the world works. Some people leave school and swim easily. Others sink. The world can be very cruel and harsh at time but people learn how to get though it all. In many ways parts of this anime can be very sad. Dreams don’t always come true, as much as we would wish it otherwise.1388940823_6260

The main character is a hikikomori. Plain and simple. Satou Tatsuhiro is 22 years old and has dropped out of college. He is an example of a growing social problem in Japan of a NEET who never leaves his house and lives off his parents. However things can’t remain like this forever. Satou desperately wants to get a job and be normal but is terrified of doing so.

Like anything Satou’s mind spirals out of control, and he comes to the conclusion their is a conspiracy around him in order to keep him as a Hikikomori. The Nihon Hikikomori Kyoukai, aka the NHK. Or for those unable to speak Japanese ‘The Japan Hikkomori Association’. A company which does its best to keep hikikomori’s as such in order to give society something to laugh at. When things are going bad, the NHK are shown by purple creatures. If they show up, bad things are happening.Welcome to the NHK 1

This is a fairly important thing and not something too far from the truth. The idea of someone panicking to the point where conspiracies become real and they are obsessed there is one against them I mean. When people lock themselves away from the real world, it’s not that hard for them to become paranoid of the world outside. Our mind can’t really cope with being stagnant, which is why people are better off with some form of job. Its not just money, but giving ourselves a purpose. For a lot of people, all they really need is a purpose, or in the case of the Hikikomori, a kick to get started.

Part of the problem with being Hikikomori is that parents enable the consideration by continuing to pay for their children once they are adults. There is no need to go out because everything is always there. Obviously there are other factors but parents are often part of the problem and not the solution from what I have read and studied. This in itself is another key issue which is played out in Welcome to the NHK. As money becomes tighter, parents are less and less able to help their children out. Gone is Japanese golden age where such things were possible.I+was+expecting+you+to+reply+to+that+_e003715ba87218a4b4a96795140dd67d

So how will this particular NEET overcome being so? For reason unknown at first, a beautiful girl has taken interest in him. Misaki has chosen him for a project which will hopefully save him from being a Hikikomori. This girl crashing into his life with more effects than he could have foreseen. She is mystery and basically a stalker. Seriously, between Misaki watching him from her house on the hill to Sadou’s sempai and old crush almost getting him to commit suicide, I was very tempted to stop watching this anime. The themes just a little too twisted, but I persisted, given this anime has a very good reputation on the net.

Misaki grew on me, especially as it grew obviously she was as socially awkward as he was. She wasn’t just a girl out for kicks, though she does seemingly grow obsessed with him. At first I wondered if we were going to end up with a character with Yuno levels of obsession. However, it turned out to be less obsession and more a kind of dependence. Everyone has one friend right? Misaka’s friend is Sadou and she gets very worried when he goes off with other people without mentioning anything to him. On the other hand, she is the only one to check up on him and make sure he is still alive. Even feeding him when his allowance gets cut.Welcome to the NHK 2

As far as the animation style goes for this anime, its not beautiful or sleek. Its plain and drab. Honestly it just adds to the story. This is a real world story, despite the conspiracy, nothing particularly amazing happens. Ignoring the episodes when Sadou gets hooked on to online games on the hope of making money. The different between the virtual world and the real world are stark. Especially when you compare the bright colours of the computer world to the dim of the room Sadou is hiding in. All in all I give this anime a gold. It is an excellent anime with some pretty strong characters and themes.

I watched this anime while I was still pretty green to the whole ecchi/harem genre layout. So we have a ‘beautiful’ noble, Lady Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière, who can’t use her magic properly and summons a human from another world to world as a familiar. Aka something to channel her power though. As a side note, she is well known for not being able to use her magic well and was nicknamed “Louise the Zero” by his classmates because of this. Lousie is a spoilt girl who honestly is still high up on my ‘Anime girls I would love to slap’ list. This lady is queen of being a tsudere. I don’t care that her type is tsudere, she’s a bitch who needs taking down a few notches.
As for the poor guy who gets summoned, Saito Hiraga he ends up with an abusive woman for a ‘master’. Because he is a familiar, the proof being the runes on his hand, he is basically treated like an animal by Louise. And like a pervert because he occasionally looks at women’s boobs. You know that thing all young single men do when its practically shoved in front of them. Lousie beats him often and its not always funny. Heck, the only reason he can talk and understand them all is because Lousie miscast a silencing spell, giving him the ability to understand them.
Whats more, turns out it actually a pretty good familiar. The runes on his hand means he some kind of super solider able to use any weapon given to him with a high level of skill.  Including a Jet fighter plane which fell though to that world once. But does he try to stop Lousie beating him? No! Does he fall in love with her? Yes!
Wait what? I have some serious issues with this. When did they fall in love? Saito has opinions over that Louise. I swear its some like of Stockholm syndrome and if it was the other way round this anime would be getting a lot more hate. Why is it suddenly sexy/funny for a flat chest little girl to beat the hell out of some poor bloke who has no chance of getting away? At least most tsudere character’s signant other wasn’t forced into a relationship. (Yes he fell in love, but he had to live with her and such for the series). At the end of season 2, they get married. I didn’t bother going back for season 3.
Now, all being said, I do remember sort of enjoying the anime. Its very beautiful and the characters were cool. I just hate the main girl is all. So Bronze.

This anime is a parody of the magical girl genre and not meant to be taken seriously.
This is an original anime written by Michiko Yokote.

As stated, this anime is a massive parody of the magical girl anime and not really meant to be taken seriously. As a parody it is very good and makes fun of a lot of the tropes we are so used to in the genre.

But as an anime itself it failed to be much more than average. The jokes, while there and plenty off, all seemed to just miss being good enough to laugh. The themes parodied were good enough to prove a point but not enough to actually hit home with anything brilliant or note worthy. For this reason I give this anime a bronze. Don’t get me wrong its fine. But I didn’t enjoy it as much the majority of the animes I have placed in silver and so I don’t feel I can put it up there.

binan
That being said, it is still worth a watch. If only because of… well. The parody? The art’s pretty enough, plenty of beautiful boys all causing problems. In fact I don’t think we see a single girl in the entirety of the anime. Even the ‘womaniser’ character is only ever seen texting his girlfriends but never actually with them. They go to the beach and discover its a all male beach, etc. There are no girls, just boys.

binan 4

Some plain, some muscular and some pretty. Not to say some of the characters can’t be replaced with girls but it is a fact of the anime. The main parody I guess is the ‘mascot’ character. Every magical girl team must have a cute animal mascot/sidekick who gives them their missions and grants them that power. Or is just there for comedic value. Even Bleach has Kon. The sidekick for this anime is a pink wombat whose name is impossible to say.
binan 2A pink wombat who is carried about by a half dead teacher who is also controlled by him too. A lot of the gags in the serious include Wombat being away from the teacher too long and rigour mortis settles in, or him rotting starting etc. The other gag with the wombat is the fact Yumoto Hakone, the youngest of the group and most excitable, loves to cuddle him. Much to the Wombats displeasure.
binan 3
The team themselves is a reluctant mix of stereotypes. From the over enthusiastic and childish Yumoto Hakone, to the calm and collected Io Naruko. Most of the boys wanted nothing to do with the pink wombat and saving the world though love but sort of get forced into it. In all the awkwardness to it is part of this animes charm but it just wasn’t quite enough to make me personally enjoy it. It was enjoyable to finish unlike the end but making fun of the cliques doesn’t stop the anime from becoming a clique itself. Nor does it give an excuse for the characters to be so 2D and underdeveloped despite the plot points they choose to give.

My personal opinion: If you are going to make a parody with 2D characters at least make the stories a bit wacky and diverse. Not standard and plastic that you could get off a generator.  Especially when the jokes don’t quite hit the target.

So Bronze
