Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry is a light novel adaption originally by Riku Misora.

Bronze

So while this is part of my weekly challenge, it was made in conjunction with Nexus. This would have had a higher grading if the little sister, Shizuku, didn’t have a brother complex. Those annoy me. Plus that ending.

This story started strong for me. It’s fairly typical in plot type and the characters are also nothing special. A guy, Ikki, who technically classified as ‘weak’ is actually quite strong and a girl, Stella, who is known for being powerful is defeated by him and falls in love because of it. Both of the MCs are likeable and entertaining to watch. Love or not, they make good friends and cheer each other on against the various hurdles they face.

Plus there is a trans girl who is called Alice. The characters barely register this to be fair, though there is some misgendering at first. It was interesting to have such a character who wasn’t introduced as a cross dresser. If anything Alice is still very much seen as a boy by most people. This was something I was interested in watching develop to see how the author/studio treated this character.

Calvalry 1.png

(Ok, I said I rated down because of the older brother complex but it was actually kind of amusing at times.)

The basic story is they are at a school for magicians and there is a competition to decides who is to represent the school in some kind of tournament. Ikki has a low level of magic but is good at fighting with swords and as such can keep up. In order to graduate because of his low magic, he needs to win and be selected as a representative. Skill can beat power is the message here and not necessarily a bad one. The fight scenes are extremely well done, as are the effects.

The budget on this one feel considerably higher than other silver link productions and the quality is higher as a result. That being said the character designs are still pretty standards, but the weapons that appear when they are fighting were pretty cool.

Calvalry 3.png

What made this anime pretty special was despite the harem theme (it’s not officially harem but with Alice identifying as a girl, Ikki is the only real male character which makes it harem to me), really there was only one real love pairing. The others had crushes on him, but Ikki starts going out with Stella with like ep 4? Part of the troubles they face include normal relationship issues which is nice compared to the normal ‘how can I get his attention?’ issues which normally appear in this genre.

Then the ending. The last episode was good. I like it, it suited the show. I didn’t like the episode before it. It basically came out of nowhere and then rushed to the finale in a way which personally ruined the series for me. The amount the forced into it was ridiculous. I can only assume they thought they were getting a second season and when that didn’t appear, rushed to make an finale. It was so bad! The rest of the story was easily a silver or possible a gold but this! This knocked it way down for me. Which was a shame really because I had really enjoyed it up until then.

Shomin Sample Review

Shomin Sample is a light novel adaptation by Takafumi Nanatsuki.

Bronze.

This harem anime is very entertaining and has a slightly different plot to most which I come across. Plus the main character isn’t a complete pervert. He likes girl’s thighs but most of the time it’s not obvious. Even when the other parts are on show, they don’t really evoke more than embarrassment from the Mc during the inevitable ecchi moments.

The basic plot of the anime is, there is an extremely rich school for just girls where no males are allowed. Except people have realised that it doesn’t exactly prepare the girls for after school, so they decide to kidnap a normal foreigner  to help ‘prepare’ them. Only to protect their purity, they pick a ‘raging homosexual who has a muscleman fetish’. Don’t we all love our best friends? XD So Kimito has a suffer through pretending to be gay or be castrated.

original.jpg

Something which is kind of hard when he is surrounded by beautiful girls who are very naive and innocent. Half the situations which happen are through no fault of his own. But he is well prepared with a collection of muscle-bound videos and other things to show the head maid when she suspects he is not as gay as he ‘claims’.

There are 4 main ‘interests’. Though the loli type in this one, Haruo, is barely acknowledged as more than pretty. Kimito generally treats her the age she acts and looks, like a child. My main issue with her is the face she strips when she’s doing maths, which is pretty often. The anime does a good job of censoring but it’s still a little uncomfortable.

shomin-3The other three are a well-refined blonde, Reiko, a shy but brash and honest red head, Aika, and a slightly violent but cute sword girl, Karin. They all have their own personalities and are pretty oblivious to the world around.

The plot is pretty good. The girls learn about the outside world and antics ensure. The school does have a slightly darker side, however. It is basically a finishing school where parents of boys can find ‘appropriate’ wives for their sons. The finale looked to be built up to be really good and then it happened and it left me feeling a little disappointed.

We went from a mostly normal story (antics of people with too much money aside) to magic powers and super tech within seconds. Then the confrontation was just a disappointment. After Kimito makes his point, the ‘enemy’ just backs down so easily it’s a little embarrassing. Unfortunately, this was enough to knock it down from a silver to a bronze.

I do not stand for bad endings. If you have made me watch 12 episodes, make the ending a good one!shomin-2

OniAi! is a Light novel adaptation by Daisuke Suzuki

Silver

I didn’t think I’d actually complete this anime given its theme and name. The younger sister loving his brother trope is common on in anime, but having the anime from the girls perspective is not something I have come across before. I don’t watch hentai so maybe it’s more common there?

Either way, OniAi is a surprising entertaining anime. The characters are pretty stereotypical of a harem/ecchi anime and many of the situations are the standard ones but they do mesh together well. With the added twist that people aren’t exactly unaware that Akio’s obsession for her brother isn’t exactly normal. Akio is half aware, living in a weird non-ignorance that she refuses to acknowledge she’s not a normal girl.

The boy had everyone likes, and only boy actually named in the entire show, is Akito. Akito is aware of his sister’s perversion but mostly waves it off. Almost too calm in the face of what he has to put up with from all 3/4 girls and then his boss to add to the mix. His twist is fantastic though.

oniai-3

The animation is good and there are considerably less sparkles than some of the animes that Silver Link have made. Maybe they clocked on with this one that story is actually more important.

This anime is ecchi and there was plenty of ecchi moments. A few had me wincing but most were in good humour. A few genuinely had me laughing. Thankfully (and showing remarkably good taste) the ecchi moments were never between the brother and sister. Or rather only ever in her imagination and not explicit.

So I give this anime a silver. It’s entertaining and extremely watchable.

Non Non Biyori is a manga adaptation written by Atto.

There is a growing problem in Japan, in that with more and more people living in the cities, the schools in rural areas are more and more stretched for resources due to the small number of students attending them. Non Non Biyori is set in one such area. Hotaru transfers to the countryside because of her father’s job. Hotaru who lived in Tokyo and now has to get used to living in the sticks. Her new school has 5 students ranging from 1st grade to 9th grade. Three of them are siblings. The boy rarely saying a word, if any. And the youngest child’s sister is the one teacher *cough cough* babysitter of the children. Which she fails at.

Non Non Biyori 2

Non Non Biyori doesn’t really have much going on other than daily life. The problems and joys of living in the middle of nowhere which little to do other than waste the day away. It is quite simply another anime, as charming as it is, which is about girls living. The comedy is light at best, nothing major. It’s fine. Non Non Biyori 1

That’s all I can really say. It’s fine. Which is why it gets a bronze. Chances are, in a year I won’t remember what happened in this anime. It was sweet and charming in its own way I guess.

If you liked this, I’d recommend Barakumon. It has more plot but the same issues of someone moving from a city to the countryside.

I watched this anime while I was still pretty green to the whole ecchi/harem genre layout. So we have a ‘beautiful’ noble, Lady Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière, who can’t use her magic properly and summons a human from another world to world as a familiar. Aka something to channel her power though. As a side note, she is well known for not being able to use her magic well and was nicknamed “Louise the Zero” by his classmates because of this. Lousie is a spoilt girl who honestly is still high up on my ‘Anime girls I would love to slap’ list. This lady is queen of being a tsudere. I don’t care that her type is tsudere, she’s a bitch who needs taking down a few notches.
As for the poor guy who gets summoned, Saito Hiraga he ends up with an abusive woman for a ‘master’. Because he is a familiar, the proof being the runes on his hand, he is basically treated like an animal by Louise. And like a pervert because he occasionally looks at women’s boobs. You know that thing all young single men do when its practically shoved in front of them. Lousie beats him often and its not always funny. Heck, the only reason he can talk and understand them all is because Lousie miscast a silencing spell, giving him the ability to understand them.
Whats more, turns out it actually a pretty good familiar. The runes on his hand means he some kind of super solider able to use any weapon given to him with a high level of skill.  Including a Jet fighter plane which fell though to that world once. But does he try to stop Lousie beating him? No! Does he fall in love with her? Yes!
Wait what? I have some serious issues with this. When did they fall in love? Saito has opinions over that Louise. I swear its some like of Stockholm syndrome and if it was the other way round this anime would be getting a lot more hate. Why is it suddenly sexy/funny for a flat chest little girl to beat the hell out of some poor bloke who has no chance of getting away? At least most tsudere character’s signant other wasn’t forced into a relationship. (Yes he fell in love, but he had to live with her and such for the series). At the end of season 2, they get married. I didn’t bother going back for season 3.
Now, all being said, I do remember sort of enjoying the anime. Its very beautiful and the characters were cool. I just hate the main girl is all. So Bronze.

Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love is a video novel game adaptation by Broccoli.

Yes I am aware this is the second season. I may have watched it without watching the first, having gotten it a bit mixed up. But I didn’t really notice, which I think has a lot for how little development happens in this series. To be fair, its an idol/music show so plot and characters aren’t really big on the agenda. Beautiful as the designs are, the characters are very 2D and there is little emotional development. More fantastic songs and sparks.

So many sparkles. The ending is just an explosion of sparkles and happy feels.

The basis story is Nanami Haruka, our lady for this, has dreams of being a famous composer and song writer. Something she is very talented is. Now she and the team have had their first big success, things are going going to get harder. Not only for her, but for the idols she is assigned to as well. The main six members of Starish are assigned new seniors to watch over them. But the seniors aren’t having the best attitudes about it, having their own issues about why they are no longer Idols. Plus a new member joins the group.

So to summarize, a few too many characters for any kind of decent development. Plus the contracts they sign mean they aren’t allowed to fall in love with anyone. Not to say they don’t get protective over their composer. When the new guy, Cecil Aijima shows up declaring his love for Nanami, they all get very pouty.

I have to say, I don’t like Japanese idea that being in a pop idol group means you can’t fall in love. You’re not allowed to have a boyfriend or girlfriend etc. Its wrong in my opinion. So the fact Cecil gives up on the idea of being with Nanami to become an idol is not one which rubbed well with me. Even if it was to inspire love and happiness to millions. To be its more like a slap in the face, regardless of how she takes it. Having some declare his love for you at every opportunity and then drop you is beyond a dick move. They can wrap it ribbons and make it pure hearted all they want.

I give this a silver because gripes aside this was an amusing anime. The ending was a bit much for me, but I don’t think its worth giving it a bronze.

Akuma no Riddle is a manga adaptation written by Yun Kōga and drawn by Sunao Minakata

This anime was not bad per-say, I just didn’t really enjoy it. Akuma no Riddle is an anime which is a battle royale type anime. One more in a long line of similar animes which have been popular over the last few years. This one which the twist of having Yuri elements. Oh and no one actually dies in this one. So what is the situation this time?

Met our leading lady, Haru Ichinose. (The girl to the right in the picture below) Haru is a cheerful bubbly girl who is covered in scars. She is also the target. Haru has spent her entire life being targeted by assassins, which has led to the death of her mum, dad and two brothers. Why? Why has she been targeted all her life? We are not told at first, as the anime unravels we slowly learn the truth behind why people are trying to kill her so much. Her wish is to survive the class and be able to live a normal life. Haru starts high school and is placed in the ‘Black’ class. A class which is made up of thirteen assassins and one Haru. All thirteen assassins are trying to kill Haru in order to gain one wish. All of them have their own motivation for joining the class, and their own styles of killing. Except one of the assassins has a change of heart.news_FD9n1W2iuOesXvT

Enter Tokaku Akuma. (The girl in the middle) Tokaku is from a legendary class of assassins and is highly trained. Except she has never actually killed anyone more. Entranced by Haru’s cheerfulness, and determination to survive Tokaku decided to try to protect Haru from the rest of their classmates. The result? A fairly standard, school scenary followed by assassination attempt and recuse format anime. The majority of the episodes are guessable and to be honest I only finished this anime because I had nothing else to do. Otherwise I would have quit. I didn’t care about the yuri themes, nor the lame fight scenes. Its just that, despite most having fairly dark and decent background stories, most of the characters were simply quite bland to me.

The only one who develops over more than one episode is Tokaku. TO be fair that is partly because after they have failed, they get kicked out the class. Which sort of puts a downer on the idea of character development. Which is a shame because it meant of the vast majority of the characters we met, we learn there life story and see their assassination attempt in one short episode and don’t see them again until the epilogue. It.It just seems lazy to me. I get the anime is supposed to be Haru x Tokaku centric, but even their interactions are fairly standard and uninteresting until the last few episodes when the truth about the Black class and Haru is revealed.

Its fine. Its nothing special and I personally didn’t enjoy it all that much. The ending was particular bad as well. It just didn’t make sense and the reason was so wishy washy it was terrible. The last few episodes were mildly more interesting and I was hoping for a good ending. Its a sweet happy ending, but make no real sense. So bronze.

Rosario to Vampire is a manga adaptation, a fairly loose adaptation but one none the less, originally written by Ikeda Akihisa.

What can I say about Rosario to Vampire. It was of the few ecchi anime’s I have ever watched and actually quite enjoyed. There was lots of panty shots and boobs. Boobs have a mind of their own in anime I swear. The ecchi in this anime was not necessarily tasteful but it was funny to watch. I also had the joy of censoring. Which put some funniness in it. The episode in Capu2 when the girls actually have long skirts on is fantastic. Just because a skirt is long doesn’t mean it won’t fly up still.

This is also a harem anime, with all the stereotypical characters. Just in supernatural form. Including loli witch, and ice cold, stoic ice queen and a bi-polar succumb.

The main character is the fairly standard human Tsukune Aono who somehow ends up going to the monster school. Sufficient to say, a lot of people want to eat him up alive. Still in manages to hide his true self for much of the series and chooses to stay at the Youkai school. Why? He has fallen in love with the pink haired Moka Akashiya who has two spilt personalties.

Moka Akashiya is a vampire, but there is a seal on her to stop her going berserk. Her pink haired persona is cute and sweet. Hates humans until she learns the guy she likes is one. Moka is not someone to be messed with because if the seal around her neck is removed (which only a human can do), her alter ego appears. Or maybe it is her actual self, it is hard to tell earlier in the series but as thing progress it becomes more obvious they they are as good as separate entities living in the same body. Vampire Moka has silver hair, red eye and is a bad ass fighter. She is aware of her alter ego and seems fond of her. Even asking Tsukane to be kind to her when they are fighting.

Moka also as a younger sister who appears in Capu2. Namely Kokoa. Kokoa hates normal Moka and Tsukane for being able to bring out the other Moka.  Kokoa loves and admires her older sister and dislike the soft thing which took her place once she was sealed. Kokoa does eventually warm up to Tsukane but it takes a while.

All in all, this anime has a lot of the standard harem cliques in it. And they work. This was a very amusing anime, even if there wasn’t must plot, if any for the vast majority or it. Ignoring keep Tsukane alive/ seduce him. So Silver.

Gakuen Alice was a manga adaptation originally written by Tachibana Higuchi.

This is a fairly dark anime, considering it looks like its for children. The manga itself is darker but the anime still deals with several of the themes. It also carries on with a them that ‘Alice’ means magic. This is a fairly common them throughout magic shows, which I don’t quite understand but that’s fine.

This is a show about primary school children. In this world, people are sometimes blessed with powers. These powers are called Alices and fall into different categories. Due to the danger of being kidnapped by extremist groups, any child with an Alice gets take from their parents and sent to the Alice Academy to learn and grow up safety. Just you know, without ever being able to see their family again or talk to them or sent the letters or any form of contact. Seriously. This school is protected by several layers of wtf? Children can be brought to the Academy from being babies, the concept it very dark. It also means a lot of the students and teachers have social problems as a result and most are just nasty people.

Oh yes, another thing. The children do there best to earn points in order to win the ‘best student’ award which as the grand prize of being allowed a week’s holiday with their family. It is the biggest prize in the school and everyone is aiming for it.
So its a dark place. And in this dark place is a light. The energetic Mikan. Mikan who is hopeless attached to her best friend Hotaru. Hotaru is a fairly strange girl but tends to bully her friends and calls Mikan a pig but she does really care about her friend. If not slightly exasperated by how much Mikan is attached her her. Hotatu has the Alice of invention. She can create anything. Que being sent to the Alice Academy. Upset by losing her best friend, Mikan follows her to the school and breaks in. The girl doesn’t even bother to tell her grandpa. Just runs off.

Turns out Mikan does have some Alive ability. And so the plot unfolds. We watch as Mikan survives the Alice Academy and learn more about this place she willing put herself into. Plus she ends up with two boys trying to get her affections. Its a good anime and has some very sweet moments. Some of the adventures they end up on are just plain hilarious. But underneath the school something much darker exists.

I’ll give Gakuen Alice a Silver, seeing as I remember watching it and more to the point, enjoying it.

Negima! is a manga adaptation originally written by Ken Akamatsu.
Disclaimer: This are my own opinions are in no reflect anyone else. If someone disagrees, feel free to comment with your own

In summary an almost ridiculous show with too many characters and far too much going on. We have cyborgs, witches and more. You name it, this show has it. The characters are half fleshed in and this show attempts to take on the highs and lows of an entire class, in 26 episodes. Giving everyone ‘unique’ powers that are often almost the definition of a ‘Mary Sue’ character.

We follow a 10 year boy, from Wales of all places, as he becomes teacher at an all girls boarding school. Negi Springfield. A mage, whose dream is to become a master mage and find his father.  Class 2-A. A class of 31 girls. Honestly, this show would have been twice as good if they had cut the girls by half and actually thought about them a bit more. They are just walking tropes. Down the girl who will destroy the girl by her very existence.

The ending was sweet and the show does give some excellent laughs. As a comedy it succeeds. It’s just not an anime I would actually recommend because it lacks in pretty much everything else in my opinion. Also it is classed as romance. Lots of not right situations with the girls and their 10 year old teacher. Some are funny, others are just a little uncomfortable.

I give it a silver because it is worth a watch for the comedy.
