Welcome to the NHK is a novel adaptation originally written Tatsuhiko Takimoto.

The closest thing I can compare this too is Catcher in the Rye. By no means do I think this is any where near as good but the themes are similar, if only with a Japanese twist in it. Watching a character which a serious social problem, spiral worse and worse. Sometimes getting better only to regress. The people around him struggling with there own problems. This anime is about the issues everyone faces and a bunch of people who learn to overcome them.

As you can tell, this anime is fairly deep at times. It has moments of funniest, moments of pervertedness, but at the heart, this anime is very realistic in how the world works. Some people leave school and swim easily. Others sink. The world can be very cruel and harsh at time but people learn how to get though it all. In many ways parts of this anime can be very sad. Dreams don’t always come true, as much as we would wish it otherwise.1388940823_6260

The main character is a hikikomori. Plain and simple. Satou Tatsuhiro is 22 years old and has dropped out of college. He is an example of a growing social problem in Japan of a NEET who never leaves his house and lives off his parents. However things can’t remain like this forever. Satou desperately wants to get a job and be normal but is terrified of doing so.

Like anything Satou’s mind spirals out of control, and he comes to the conclusion their is a conspiracy around him in order to keep him as a Hikikomori. The Nihon Hikikomori Kyoukai, aka the NHK. Or for those unable to speak Japanese ‘The Japan Hikkomori Association’. A company which does its best to keep hikikomori’s as such in order to give society something to laugh at. When things are going bad, the NHK are shown by purple creatures. If they show up, bad things are happening.Welcome to the NHK 1

This is a fairly important thing and not something too far from the truth. The idea of someone panicking to the point where conspiracies become real and they are obsessed there is one against them I mean. When people lock themselves away from the real world, it’s not that hard for them to become paranoid of the world outside. Our mind can’t really cope with being stagnant, which is why people are better off with some form of job. Its not just money, but giving ourselves a purpose. For a lot of people, all they really need is a purpose, or in the case of the Hikikomori, a kick to get started.

Part of the problem with being Hikikomori is that parents enable the consideration by continuing to pay for their children once they are adults. There is no need to go out because everything is always there. Obviously there are other factors but parents are often part of the problem and not the solution from what I have read and studied. This in itself is another key issue which is played out in Welcome to the NHK. As money becomes tighter, parents are less and less able to help their children out. Gone is Japanese golden age where such things were possible.I+was+expecting+you+to+reply+to+that+_e003715ba87218a4b4a96795140dd67d

So how will this particular NEET overcome being so? For reason unknown at first, a beautiful girl has taken interest in him. Misaki has chosen him for a project which will hopefully save him from being a Hikikomori. This girl crashing into his life with more effects than he could have foreseen. She is mystery and basically a stalker. Seriously, between Misaki watching him from her house on the hill to Sadou’s sempai and old crush almost getting him to commit suicide, I was very tempted to stop watching this anime. The themes just a little too twisted, but I persisted, given this anime has a very good reputation on the net.

Misaki grew on me, especially as it grew obviously she was as socially awkward as he was. She wasn’t just a girl out for kicks, though she does seemingly grow obsessed with him. At first I wondered if we were going to end up with a character with Yuno levels of obsession. However, it turned out to be less obsession and more a kind of dependence. Everyone has one friend right? Misaka’s friend is Sadou and she gets very worried when he goes off with other people without mentioning anything to him. On the other hand, she is the only one to check up on him and make sure he is still alive. Even feeding him when his allowance gets cut.Welcome to the NHK 2

As far as the animation style goes for this anime, its not beautiful or sleek. Its plain and drab. Honestly it just adds to the story. This is a real world story, despite the conspiracy, nothing particularly amazing happens. Ignoring the episodes when Sadou gets hooked on to online games on the hope of making money. The different between the virtual world and the real world are stark. Especially when you compare the bright colours of the computer world to the dim of the room Sadou is hiding in. All in all I give this anime a gold. It is an excellent anime with some pretty strong characters and themes.

Air is a video game adaptation developed by Key.

Air’s a weird anime. Its sweet in its own way and unlike so many anime’s of its genre doesn’t have a thousand girls for the main guy to pick from. Yukito Kunisaki is a man on a mission! That mission is to locate the winged maiden. A story told to him by his mother and one he wants to prove is real. He is basically a hobo who ‘works’ as a travelling puppeteer but fails miserably to actually get any money. Yukito ends up in a small coastal town and meets three girls who all potentially could help him with his quest.

Our main female interest is a high school girl called Misuzu. Misuzu is seemingly your stereotypical blond girl. Clumsy and naive. Yukito ends up working as her babysitter as her adoptive mother is busy doing something. Misuzu and Yukito’s story is a powerful one, filled with ups and downs as Yukito discovered Misuzu’s illness and has to comprehend just how such a girl is so optimistic in the face of so much sadness.

I have to admit, I remember more about the beginning of air than the ending. This is one of those animes I remember enjoying at the time, but little of the plot has remained with me. Other than the ending is one which was very bitter-sweet and didn’t actually answer all the questions the anime brought to life about this sleepy town. I do recall Air is an anime which can be very confusing at times.

Considering his anime was made in 2005, Air is a stunningly beautiful anime. The lines were clear cut and the animation for the scenery was amazing. They really put some time and effort in to making this world come alive.

At first I wasn’t sure what to give this anime, but I think at the end of things I will give it a silver. Its beautiful and the story touching. One day, when I have time, I fully intend to re-watch it.

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge is a manga adaptation originally written by Tomoko Hayakawa.

tried to watch Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge twice. The second time I succeeded. The different between the two times? Well the first time was after watching Ouran Host Club and these two animes are often recommended together despite the female leads being exceptionally different to each other. Why? Well the story revolves around beautiful boys and a unladylike girl. Other than that, I’m not personally sure why. Though both are excellent anime. I do like this anime, despite the fact I didn’t finish it the first time around. I think exams got in the way the first time.

yamato_nadeshiko_shichi_henge_43As previously mentioned, the story is about beautiful boys and an unladylike girl. In Ouran, Haruhi is a cross dresser. In Yamato Nadeshiko, our leading lady is a recluse. Having been told by her middle school crush that she was ugly, Nakahara Sunako gave up being a lady. Instead becoming obsessed with the occult and horror films. Not to mention looking like the girl from the ring, Sunako is infamous for scaring everyone. Her room is full of scary items, including a skeleton and an anatomical model who serves as Sunako’s best ‘friend’

For various reasons Sunako moves into her aunts mansion. Currently living in the mansion are four beautiful boys for for various reasons can’t live at home so Sunako’s aunt as collected them effiectly. With their own quirks, Sunako’s aunt makes a deal with them. If they can master the task of turning Sunako into a lady in one month, they don’t have to pay rent. But if they fail, they have to pay threetimes as much. They agree, not having met Sunako. From the moment they met her, it soon becomes pretty clear, this is an impossible task.yamato 1

Sunako is reluctant to enter the world of light. In face because she has locked herself away for so many years, she lets nosebleeds whether she is confronted by the boys. Sunako’s character is an interesting one because she is pretty much the anti shoujo girl in many ways and yet still one. She has been hurt by boys and wants nothing to do with him. She is stubborn and fights viciously to not go along with the schemes that the boys come up with to make money. Sunako is also surprising sensible. She is smart and can cook. She also is very self aware. She knows she scares people, she even won’t her father in her room because he’s scared of the occult.

This anime is enjoyable, watching as the boys try to make Sunako become a lady though blackmail and bribes. Not to mention all the stuff that occurs when a not so pretty girl lives which 4 stunning boys who have their own fanclubs. Honestly my biggest problem with this anime is the style. Sunako’s fine, there is visible differences between when she is not trying and when she is in beauty mode. But the boys. The boys are drawn weirdly to me. They are stylize and I understand that it is anime but the boys look more like girls than most of the girls do. Plus they aren’t that attractive to me. They are sweet though and have there own problems to add to the story.

So Silver. Its a good story if you can over look the art style.

D.N.Angel is a manga adaptation written by Yukiru Sugisaki.
D.N angel was a good anime. People can call it clique all they want and yes a couple of the characters were annoying but get this! It was made in 2003. This anime likely set more than a couple of the cliques. Also it was interesting and entertaining.
Its starts off pretty standard. 14 year old boy tries to confess to the girl of his dreams, in this case Haruka Risa. Not to be confused with her older twin Haruka Riku. Why does Risa reject him? Simply Daisuke is too ‘normal’. My rant about Risa will happen in a moment. Anywhere, back to Daisuke gets reject. So he’s heart broken which is where this anime takes a turn for the interesting. Suddenly, whenever he thinks about Risa he turns into the legendary phantom thief known as Dark. Dark has a fantastic because a) he has wings and I love wings. b) He actually is his own person. In fact Daisuke spends a good amount of time having no idea just who Dark is. Either way, Dark then spends much of his time stealing prizeless pieces of art for Daisuke mother. For reasons we find out later on in the story.
This anime is a fantastic story and extremely fun to watch. There is lots of drama and lots of plot twists. However there is one thing. Or rather person who spoils it for me.
Three guesses who? Risa. Risa is a stuck up bitch in my opinion. She is the sort of person who is used to everyone worshipping her because she is the beautiful twin. Riku is far nicer but Daisuke spends most of his time trying to make Risa happy because of his crush on her. Risa takes full advantage of this by the way and Daisuke lets her get away with it. Worse yet, remember the whole Risa rejected the boy for being too normal? Because she wants someone ‘interesting’, she becomes obsessed with Dark. Something which is not helped by the fact she conveniently looks a little like Dark’s former love.
Blah. I don’t like her. I do like the anime. So Silver.

Pretear is a manga adaptation drawn by Naruse Kaori and written by Sato Junichi.

This is the anime which proves that reverse harem is not a new thing in the anime world. That doesn’t make it good though. Bronze. She goes for the guy who is a dick to her the entire time. She is awful. Okay, so its not that unusual. It is one of the most standard tropes going. But, the thing is, that doesn’t make it right.

Himeno Awayuki is a delicate flower, read pathetic little whinny girl. To be fair to her umm. No. Her life is sad. Yes. Her mother dies, her father remarries and the family are a horrible to her. As are her classmates. She gets bullied and debates her place in life. She is hurt and vulnerable and doesn’t know how to change things. Notice, she is 16. This is not the end of her life. She is an angsty teenage. Honestly she just needs to put on black and she would be an emo to be honest.

Then something amazing happens. She is attacked and saved by mysterious pretty men called the Leafe Knights, who tell her that she’s the Prétear who is needed to save the world from darkness. Each of the episodes are Himeno getting to know one of the guys before kissing them and using there transformation to save the day. She gets to know them all and still she falls for the dick who pretty much tells her she is worthless and treats her like shit. Somehow the two fall in love.

At this point, I’m not sure why I bothered finishing the anime and honestly I reckon I only did it because this was at a time where a lot of the anime sites had been taken down and the new ones had yet to start up again. Pretear was not a good anime. It was a very bad one in my opinion. She is the sort of girl I would have liked to slap, and tell her to get some self respect. Some of her actions you can place down to losing her mother and being bullied. That doesn’t make her a likeable character to me. Nor one who should be used as a role model.

The only reason this gets bronze is that I finished it. Otherwise it would be stone.

Kaleido Star is an original anime created by Junichi Sato, and written by Reiko Yoshida.

Kaledio is not your standard anime. Its a anime about a troop of performers who work at the most famous ring in the world. Sora is a young woman who has come to the troop to follow her dream and perform with her idol. Sora is a good performer but what’s her more special is her endless determination. It doesn’t matter what she comes across, doesn’t matter who tries to bring her down. Sora will rise again. She is a wonder female character which as much determination of any of the boys in a sports anime.

Honestly, I love sports anime and that is likely part of the joy in this anime as well. There are obstacles to face. And they all dive head first to over come them. Working together to pull of stunts and create plays which will truly entertain and inspire the audience. In some ways the motivation of these characters are more noble than that in sports animes. Sora wants to be the best, but more than that she wants to make the audience happy. She will literally do anything to put a smile on someone’s face.

It is that fire in her which helps her gain the hearts of her colleagues. Helps her reawaken the love of performing in her idol. And more than anything, inspires everyone to grow and become the best performers they can do. The plot arcs are interesting the performances Sora and the troop but on are beautiful. I’m not sure how many of them are actually feasible in real life, however this anime so you have to accept a couple of things.

This anime is gold to me. It opened my eyes to new set of animes that were sports but showed how powerful passion can be in people. Showed how drive people are to change and succeed in their dreams. Dreams which aren’t just to beat everyone else. But dreams of actually being the best and inspiring others to become the best as well. Kaleido-Star-kaleido-star-7067945-1024-768

Chrno Crusade was a Manga adaptation originally written by Daisuke Moriyama.
This anime is one which i personally loved but for not many know about it. It is a wonderful anime. It is also surprising bright and light compared to others of its genre. So we have Chrno, a demon. He was once high ranking but rebelled to try and gain freedom. Its a little complicated but he ends up killing tchrno-crusade-personnages1he love of his life and gets sealed away. Eventually he get released and forms a contract with one Rosette Christopher in order to save her brother from another demon. The two work for the church to destroy demons.
As normal, this series has several minor plot line that seem unrelated but end up being entwined together. Rosette is a cool character but she is a stubborn loud mouth who has no problems with telling you what’s what. But she is a good person. Risking her life every time she fights. Quite literally as every time Chrno uses his powers, he uses up some of Rosette’s life force.
Chrno is properly one of the most un-demon characters you are likely to meet. He’s caring and sweet. Even when Rosette is being unreasonable. When you get him angry though, that’s when you see the demon in him. The fights scenes in this are pretty cool as well. These are characters who stick with you even after you have watched it.
The ending is sad. Tear worthy even. Perfect but it did make me cry. Anyway. This was gold to me. It caught my heart and my imagination. And added some colour into the genre of demons, making a change to the normal dark colours which are the norm.
