Kokoro Connect is a light novel adaptation by Sadanatsu Anda.

Gold

Kokoro is about five high school students who don’t fit into normal clubs. In Japan clubs are a really important thing and as they can’t fit into one, the teachers make a new club for them called the ‘cultural research club.’ One day the students switch bodies and antics ensure.

Turns out an alien called Heartseed is messing with them to seeing what interesting things happen. The first act has some switching bodies, the second has their emotions going haywire. Heartseed is a bit of a jerk who I think really is just a bored godlike creature. He often apologises in advance for his actions but that doesn’t negate the fact they often cause a lot of distress for the main characters.

‘It just so happens you are some pretty interesting people, I guess.’

‘The phenomena will end when it’s no longer entertaining.’

He’s not kidding with the first statement. Ignoring the back they aren’t part of normal clubs they all are unique people with a mostly unique back stories. Appearances aside. Silver Link is low production so I’ve mostly given up on expecting any form of unique character designs from them. Sadanatsu Anda, on the other hand, seems very good at writing characters. There is a lot of character development in this story.

connect 2.png

Not all of the situations are sad or upsetting, some are quite funny. Most are serious through to high school students and cause a lot of fighting. Most of which evoked feelings similar to how I felt when I watched Anohana, which is properly why I have rated it high.

It has good animation and voice acting. It has a good story. It has strong characters and made me feel emotions towards them. All of which rate it a gold to me. It’s one thing to have a good story, another to make the audience actually care about the characters.

Or possibly I relate to Inaba a little too much, but hey! I don’t claim this blog is official. If anything the bad grammar and writing is proof of that. These are just my own personal feelings lol.

As for the ending well. It suited the story 🙂

OniAi! is a Light novel adaptation by Daisuke Suzuki

I didn’t think I’d actually complete this anime given its theme and name. The younger sister loving his brother trope is common on in anime, but having the anime from the girls perspective is not something I have come across before. I don’t watch hentai so maybe it’s more common there?

Either way, OniAi is a surprising entertaining anime. The characters are pretty stereotypical of a harem/ecchi anime and many of the situations are the standard ones but they do mesh together well. With the added twist that people aren’t exactly unaware that Akio’s obsession for her brother isn’t exactly normal. Akio is half aware, living in a weird non-ignorance that she refuses to acknowledge she’s not a normal girl.

The boy had everyone likes, and only boy actually named in the entire show, is Akito. Akito is aware of his sister’s perversion but mostly waves it off. Almost too calm in the face of what he has to put up with from all 3/4 girls and then his boss to add to the mix. His twist is fantastic though.

The animation is good and there are considerably less sparkles than some of the animes that Silver Link have made. Maybe they clocked on with this one that story is actually more important.

This anime is ecchi and there was plenty of ecchi moments. A few had me wincing but most were in good humour. A few genuinely had me laughing. Thankfully (and showing remarkably good taste) the ecchi moments were never between the brother and sister. Or rather only ever in her imagination and not explicit.

So I give this anime a silver. It’s entertaining and extremely watchable.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia is a manga adaptation written by Maybe.

This is anime is a strong silver to me. It is a lovely story with a strong storyline which doesn’t really faulter. The characters are not as strong but they were entertaining enough to keep me focused on the screen. Something which can be hard in some animes when the characters are weak/boring. There are no episodes which feel like fillers or out of place. The ecchi moments, while there are not completely in your face and they do a good job of tying up loose ends. Tasogare 2So the plot? Well. Yuuko is a ghost. A very famous ghost at a private school. The private school is a unique place, having been built and expanded to the point where the school is a maze of classrooms and corridors. Rooms which have been reassigned to storage, and corridors which don’t actually  lead anywhere. Basically the perfect place for supernatural stories to take place.

Yuuko is trapped in this large school and basically creates ghost story’s because she gets bored and does things which scare people who can’t see her. Like play the piano in the music room etc. She’s not intentionally trying to scare people but the ghost stories do me she can manifest in scary forms due to their believes.  Which i quite like the idea of. Its not necessarily her being evil, because she is not, but the fear which the school builds up due to her presence which makes her seem like a monster to a lot of the student body. Thing is though, she doesn’t remember her past or how she died.Tasogare 1

Enter Niiya. A freshman who for some reason can see Yuuko. Niiya then agrees to help her investigate the 7 mystery’s around her and her past. Along with two other girls who join the club. One for fun, Okonogi, and the other because she too can see Yuuko and doesn’t trust her, Kanoe.

I like how they introduced the characters, I thought it was a very unique and fun way to met them. We met Okonogi first. Okonogi can’t actually see Yuuko but believes she exists. She joins the club after they ‘save’ her from a ghost she summonsed (completely made up by Yuuko being bored). She’s the one who finds the ghost stories from them to investigate and of course has a massive crush on Niiya. She’s gullible, silly and a bit oblivious. The series opens up to her talking to herself in the club room with Yuuko trying to haunt her and failing as Okonogi takes no notice of it. Its brilliant in so many ways.
Tas
Do I like her? Most of the time. She’s got determination, I’ll give her that. Fighting, literally occasionally with a love rival she can not see. Because of this she often inadvertently gets in the way of Yuuko and Niiya having dates etc. She is spunky but her character doesn’t really play much role other than to be a more active love rival. She has little to no developments, not that the others have much but it always pushes a anime down in my opinion if they do not take proper care of their characters.

She has more personalty than the rest of them. Ignoring Yuuko. Niiya is your typical shounen boy. Loyal, whole hearted and a little oblivious to the fact most of the girls around him have crushes on them. Kanoe plays the part of serious but easily embarrassed love rival. She also looks a lot like Yuuko for a very good reason in my books. But in all honesty the characters were not very good or special in the anime. The animation is also pretty standard.

What makes this anime entertaining is the story, which I’m not going to give too many spoilers away for. Simply to say, its not quite only Yuuko haunting the school and the reason why is very clever to me. I love ghost stories so this one really ran up my alley.

My one beef was with the ending. I really liked how they were setting it up. Everything had been resolved and revealed. They had been on a date. It was all sad and than… Call me silly but I would have preferred the sad ending indicated by what they were setting up. Its a ghost story! Also everything had been sorted so it was a good end. So why did they feel the need to force a happy one? So many issues with having the ending this way. You can’t even say ‘to lead on to a second season’. A second season doing what? They achieved all their objectives!

So Silver. Good story and tastefully done. Bad characters and slightly disappointing ending due to genre.

Sankarea is a manga adaptation originally written by Mitsuru Hattori.

Put until the last two episodes, I was going to put this as silver maybe even a gold if the ending matching up the the beginning, but the ending spoiled this anime to me. Basically the ending was weak. It was not bad romance because just the anticlimactic-ness of it all. If I’m honest, the fact we had two random episodes about minor characters instead of the main plot line was already counting against it. While one explained a bit of the emotions of the one of the main-ish character, the other was just plain filler. As was the last episode. Nothing to the plot, other than an excuse to have fireworks so the main characters could hopefully could reveal their feeling for each other. And fail. As the anime trope goes. Though the final bit was certainly not a normal trope.

This anime is different. The premise being familiar but new in anime form. A human boy falls in love with a zombie girl. Except it more, he falls in love with a girl who then becomes a zombie. What I liked about this anime was that it had a strong beginning. The characters were well introduced, as was the story. A boy obsessed with zombies is trying to work out how to resurrect his dead pet when a beautiful girl stumbles on him. A girl with a dark family life. Who he then promises that if she ever becomes a zombie, he’ll look after her. Not for one moment thinking it will actually happen.

Sankarea 01

Aka, her father is obsessed with her. Beyond unhealthy levels. Much to her mothers unhappiness. We know at the end of the first episode this girl is destined to return to him as a zombie but it is a few episodes before that occurs. Instead we watch as her father tries to control her while she sneaks out to met with him. When she finally dies, we watch something as she arises from the dead. Not that it stops her fathers obsession at all. hadena-sankarea-03-10bit720p72e36eea-mkv_snapshot_21-58_2012-06-24_13-33-27

I did like the symbolism in this anime. In Japan there is a strong connection between hydrangeas and death. Beautfiul flowers which have a dark meaning in Japanese culture. That they could bring someone back to life was a cool idea. The idea to make it so they could preserve zombies and let them life longer before turning feral was ok. It makes sense, if they are the key ingredient that a supply of them is needed to remain alive but it seemed to be missing something. Not that the story would have been better if Rea had been fighting the desire to eat flesh.sankarea-06-40

The thing which really disappointed me about this anime was the ending with the father. This guy is a real sicko. Claiming to be protecting his daughter’s purity. They go though this whole build up of him kidnapping them both and dramatic revelations. And then nothing. Barely a fight, and then he just accepts what they want. This is a guy who paid for people to follow and kidnap his daughter and her friend and he just… lets her stay with him? I don’t know what I expected but something a bit more dramatic/interesting than that!

If someone was the ask me about this anime I’d properly tell them to give it a go. But I’m not likely to recommend it of the tip of my head. It had a really interesting premise and a good if not twisted story built around it but while it passed barely on the romance side, the other aspects failed to satisfy when could have been. This anime could have been so good. But it failed to deliver. So Bronze

Binbougami Ga! is a manga adaptation originally written by Yoshiaki Sukeno.

So this anime is tagged as Parody, though I’m not really sure what it is a parody of. There are a lot of really extreme characters. There are also a lot of references to other animes which are hilarious. A lot to dragonball, to many to others as well, including death note, which is shown below because it was brilliantly done. This anime is happy to make jokes out of itself. Binbou Gami Ga 1A basic summary of this anime is the fri-enemy-ship between a girl who has too much fortune and is a bit of a bitch, and a god of misfortune who has been sent to fix the imbalance. Ichiko is a girl blessed with having too much fortune. To many she seems untouchable and an angel. In reality she’s a arrogant bitch who loves getting her own way and doesn’t really care about other people. Though I do love her, I call her a bitch affectionately in this one. I love animes about girls who are not frail and this anime is it. All three of the female leads are not afraid to throw a punch or say something bluntly.

Ichiko had a bad childhood, a rich heiress whose parents had no time for her and her only real carer was her butler. This with the fact a lot of her friends used her as a child meant she struggles to make friends and only really uses people. So when Momoji crashes into her life, things being to get interesting.

Binbou Gami Ga 4

Momoji is a lazy god of misfortune. Not death. Misfortune. Her job to take the masses of fortune which Ichiko has a redistribute it to people who need it. Except who would want to go near that big ass needle? Not Ichiko, she avoids Momoji’s attempted to steal her fortune easily, occasionally letting it happen to safe people. During the rare moments when she is feeling sympathetic to other people. Not that she ever admits it. Ichiko and Momoji’s relationship is a strange one. They are pretty much best friends. Kind of. They insult each other and beat each other up but their is definitely a fondness there. A fondness between two bitches but it exists. Something which only grows as a third girl is added. The tomboy Rindou. Who was brought up pretty much as a boy by her father.Binbou Gami Ga 2

Momoji’s arrival means that Ichiko has to deal with a lot of madness which comes with her including a perverted black monk, and a m-type inugami. Plus a new friend at show shows up.Theses guys are only really in the show for comedy relieve but their appearances are well done and often the only real ecchi type scenes in the show. Despite the fansercive heavy opening and closing. Along with two classmates with their own problems, we watch as the two girls cause choas and try to defeat each other. While watching Ichiko grow slightly into a more well rounded person. She still has a sharp tongue but she slowly begins to understand other people due to accidents with Momoji’s plans.

I found this series awesome and I fully recommend it to anyone who like comedy programs! Gold.

Ano Natsu de Matteru is an original anime series written by Yosuke Kuroda, with original character design by Taraku Uon.

In summary, a typical anime about the summer in high school, complete with trip to Okinawa and four triangles. With the twist of one of them is an alien and the fact they are decide to make a film over the summer.

Ano Natsu 1

This anime has a similar feeling to it as Anohana. Except not as good. admittedly though, Anohana is a tough one to beat though in this genre. Ano Natsu de Matteru is a enjoyable if typical drama. The male lead, Kaito is a typical lead with very little personality and his main trait being that he loves of filmmaking. He falls in love with a new student at his school. Ichika, an alien who is searching for a place in her memories and ends up living at his house. As you know, so many animes work. Kaito doesn’t quite live alone but to clear that end up his sister goes on a work trip for the summer to Boliva of all places so its just the two of them. And his friends when they come barging round.

Ano Natsu 3

I’m not going to lie, I spent most of this anime not really liking Ichika. She’s very bland. With even less to say about her than the male lead. Apart from the fact she goes beyond in love with him and almost to obsessive early one. Following him whenever she sees him with other people. Though she doesn’t seem to quite realise it at first. I find her tiresome and I’m not sure how much she actually adds to the story ignoring being an alien. Also I found my self taking Kanna’s side in the fight for Kaito’s heart. Ichiro just appears out of nowhere and steals it without giving Kanna a chance. But I guess that life. If it hadn’t been a alien, it would have been something else I think sadly.

Honestly the amount of time spend on the characters is enough. They are a pretty pathetic lot really. Massive love rectangle between the lot of them, with an added two girls for the okinawa episodes. I quite like the fact none of them end up with who they want though. More realistic that way. The character I wished we had learned more about was Remon/Lemon, though I realise this anime was the wrong genre for that.

Ano Natsu 2

Lemon is a young looking girl who is actually much older than she appears, though her actual age is never specified. She is introduced as Ichika’s classmate who for unknown reasons wears a different uniform to the rest of the school. It quickly becomes apparent she knows far more than she lets on. It is discovered eventually she works for the men in black but its an sideline. She is mostly in charge of filming the events which are going on. She is the most interesting one to me and I wish we had learnt more about her. Like why she was there in the first place? Does she spend every summer at that school or what?

As far as the other aspects of this anime goes, the action is so random and very clique in its reasoning. It does spice up the anime though. Otherwise its just a lot of tears as everyone is in love with someone who is in love with someone else. Part from the main pair. With some summer cheer as they have fun occasionally.

I give this anime a bronze. It was enjoyable but nothing special nor unique and I spent much of it disliking the main characters which always knocks a show down a few pegs.

Inu X Boku SS is a Manga Adaptation, orginally written by  Cocoa Fujiwara.

Honestly, I’m not sure what happened with this show. Given the manga, it had the potential to be the next fruits basket with a cast of interesting and well developed characters and relationships. But the anime just does not measure up at all. The manga ran from 2009 to 2014, so while it was made before the manga was finished, there was still a good portion of the manga written in order to make this a good show. Its only 12 episodes after all. Maybe they were hoping for a second season but Inu x Boku SS was a fairly mundane and uninteresting anime. Entertainment at the minimum, all the jokes and potential there but not quite carried off.

We have a show about rich demon descendants who live in a apartment with their bodyguards and all the antics that brings. A girl named Ririchiyo Shirakiin moves into the Ayakashikan hoping for some peace and quiet. Instead, she finds herself with the service of the Secret Service agent, Sōshi Miketsukami who loves her very very much. Seriously Miketsukami is like a puppy when it comes to Ririchiyo. Willing to do anything to stay by her side. But it gets a little tiresome to be honest. Actually that word pretty much sums up how I feel about a lot of the characters ‘tiresome’. All their indivudual character gags are played so much and so little development the comedy fast becomes yawn worthy. Its not surprising only one season was made.

This anime just doesn’t seem to want to know what it is. Its got supernatural creatures who can fight, trying to live fairly normal lives with all the normal things that happen in a dysfunctional family. However it just is boring. The fights aren’t interesting and have no real purpose the majority of the time. Other than to declare, ‘hey remember we have powers! look at us!’. And the ‘normal’ everyday stuff often feels out of place. Like its not normal. Not even for them. Something is missing. I just can’t put my finger on it, other that a lot of the elements in this anime as lacking in entertainment value. It tries to be dark and funny at the same time and just doesn’t pull it off.  It’s not good enough to just give characters issues and throw in some gags for entertainment.

So. Bronze. It had all the ingredients were there but failed to make anything particularly good. Just your standard pretty show.302975-aliya06

Accel World is based of a manga adaptation by Reki Kawahara.

Right. Um. I wanted to like this. I had read lots of good reviews about how it was a unique anime with new characters. I was beyond disappointed. I tried to watch it three times. The first time was when it had just come out. I had assumed that I didn’t get past the first two episodes due to real life reasons. However recently I tried watching it again. Twice. First time I wasn’t impressed but went back because it was on loads of recommendations. But no. I did not enjoy this anime at all.

The concept is a cool one. A game which takes place in a half reality, half virtual place where people are trying to be the king. The idea of avatars and levelling up. Its all really cool and I agree that is at least original. Most virtual world animes take place in the game itself. But this was an interesting spin to the genre.

So why didn’t I like it? Why, when this anime had a good concept to work on. Simple answer. The characters. They were so hollow and 2D. The main guy is called Haruyuki Arito. He is a short fat high school boy whose avatar is even a pig. He, of course, hates himself because of his size and the fact everyone around him looks normal. Seriously, I get that we are meant to fall for him because he’s the underdog and its like ‘he’s ugly but he still gets girls throwing themselves at him’.

The girls who are just. Blerh. Boring. Kuroyukihime, the cool beautiful beauty who is the school idol. Who is on the run from people in the game because she defeated a whole bunch of powerful people and almost get the both of the killed in real life as well. She has lots of deep conversations. I watched 4 episodes. They were far too deep for where we were in the show. Also she is meant to be superpower and despite the fact she has only been talking to him for like 5 minutes, gets jealous when he cables with his best friend. Who she asked him to cable to get information on her. She also tries martyrs herself. So no. Manipulative bitch here, who admits to betraying her friends in the game before. Why should Haru trust her? Because he’s pretty and pays him a bit of attention. Seriously?.

The best friend,Chiyuri Kurashima, who gets super possessive and jealous over him because he is her longest friend. She doesn’t want him going out with Hime because… um? She doesn’t like her and as his best friend, she can say that. Chiyuri has a boyfriend by the way. But still pins Haru down on her bed to tell him that she doesn’t want things to change between them and wants to be friends together. Get all tearful when he promises they will always be friends as well. Pathetic little girl.

So no. I don’t like this anime. Stone.

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is a manga adaptation written by Robico.

Shoujo is a strange genre to me. I like romances but I don’t like typical boy met girl animes. Rather I hate flimsy female characters who can’t stand for themselves. Shizuku is not a flimsy female character. Indeed her nickname in the anime is Dry Ice. She does not appear to care about anyone or anything, ignoring getting top grades. Though better blackmailed by her teacher, (or rather bribed) Shizuka agrees to drop of some note to the class delinquent, Haru. Haru is described as a monster who got suspended from school on the first day and has yet to show up again.

Haru is like an adorable puppy. He’s naive, doesn’t really understand things but he’s very clever and strong. Because Shizuka brought him the notes, this instantly makes them best friends in his eyes, much to Shizuka irritation. And it is irritation. She does not want someone distracting her from her studies. But life doesn’t work out like that and she gets pulled unwillingly into the life of a normal high school. Aka having friends and hanging out with them.

They fall in love slowly but surely. A few love rivals along the way. They are adorable as a couple. Both inexperienced in love and just sort of stumbling along. Shizuka is adamant she does not want a boyfriend however her heart says different things and well. Haru too cute sometimes.

All in all I give it Gold for a fresh take on boy mets girl and the comedy in it. Including a chicken. You can’t hate an anime which manages to get a chicken into the main cast.
