Kokoro Connect is a light novel adaptation by Sadanatsu Anda.

Gold

Kokoro is about five high school students who don’t fit into normal clubs. In Japan clubs are a really important thing and as they can’t fit into one, the teachers make a new club for them called the ‘cultural research club.’ One day the students switch bodies and antics ensure.

Turns out an alien called Heartseed is messing with them to seeing what interesting things happen. The first act has some switching bodies, the second has their emotions going haywire. Heartseed is a bit of a jerk who I think really is just a bored godlike creature. He often apologises in advance for his actions but that doesn’t negate the fact they often cause a lot of distress for the main characters.

‘It just so happens you are some pretty interesting people, I guess.’

‘The phenomena will end when it’s no longer entertaining.’

He’s not kidding with the first statement. Ignoring the back they aren’t part of normal clubs they all are unique people with a mostly unique back stories. Appearances aside. Silver Link is low production so I’ve mostly given up on expecting any form of unique character designs from them. Sadanatsu Anda, on the other hand, seems very good at writing characters. There is a lot of character development in this story.

connect 2.png

Not all of the situations are sad or upsetting, some are quite funny. Most are serious through to high school students and cause a lot of fighting. Most of which evoked feelings similar to how I felt when I watched Anohana, which is properly why I have rated it high.

It has good animation and voice acting. It has a good story. It has strong characters and made me feel emotions towards them. All of which rate it a gold to me. It’s one thing to have a good story, another to make the audience actually care about the characters.

Or possibly I relate to Inaba a little too much, but hey! I don’t claim this blog is official. If anything the bad grammar and writing is proof of that. These are just my own personal feelings lol.

As for the ending well. It suited the story 🙂

Prisma Illya is a spin-off series from the Fate/Stay Night verse. A parody on magical girls with Illya staring the main protagonist and the rest of the cast appearing as various roles. Let me stay now, I have never watched any of the Fate series, and it something on my list of animes to watch at some point. So while I did do some background checking, most of what I watched was free of the implicit meanings. The spin-off was created by  Hiroshi Hiroyama, also known as KALMIA.

Parody’s, in general, either hit the mark or fail miserably. This anime is interesting in that it is a parody but stands pretty well on its own as its own story. Yes it is a spin-off, but it is a different timeline, making it easy to take this as it’s own story. References are made to the original series. References I don’t normally get due to my lack of watching the original series but they are there. Illya’s older brother is Shiro from the main series and is adopted the same as for example. Maybe I will rewatch this after watching the original series and see how many references I can spot because I am sure there will be a lot more than I can see. This anime was a gold to me, incredibly entertaining both as a story and as a parody. Unlike Binan which just missed all the marks, this one hit them square on.

fate illya 1This anime has action, has drama, and has some excellent effects. To me, it is an extremely well-made anime and no money was wasted on this anime. The music is stunning and on point. Especially in the battle scenes. The art is beautiful. It is obviously styled from the original but the colouring technique really brings out the magical girl vibe.

Ruby and Sapphire are the names of the magic girl sticks and are elementals trapped within them. They are sassy and don’t like the two bickering women they have been assigned too. So they leave them and form contracts with others. Meaning the two girls have to work together to collect the hero cards. Which is done by defeating the berserk hero spirits in mirror realms.

fate illya 2

Illya starts as being pretty powerless, only to grow into being almost too powerful. Magic is based on the image in the caster’s mind.

“You can fly?”

“Can’t all magical girls?”

“What a useful image to have!”

The problem is that when she is in a tough situation she reacts instinctively and creates an almost devastating power. Which is where the drama comes in. Her counterpart Miyu is excellent in everything she does and always in control. The two vast different character types leaving the two girls in a strange comradeship for much of the series. Friends and yet envious of each other. Which causes some real issues. But in typical magical girl fashion, it gets solved through the power of friendship and there is a happy ending with lots of sparkles and happy feels.

So gold. It’s pretty has great music and a good plot.

Non Non Biyori is a manga adaptation written by Atto.

There is a growing problem in Japan, in that with more and more people living in the cities, the schools in rural areas are more and more stretched for resources due to the small number of students attending them. Non Non Biyori is set in one such area. Hotaru transfers to the countryside because of her father’s job. Hotaru who lived in Tokyo and now has to get used to living in the sticks. Her new school has 5 students ranging from 1st grade to 9th grade. Three of them are siblings. The boy rarely saying a word, if any. And the youngest child’s sister is the one teacher *cough cough* babysitter of the children. Which she fails at.

Non Non Biyori 2

Non Non Biyori doesn’t really have much going on other than daily life. The problems and joys of living in the middle of nowhere which little to do other than waste the day away. It is quite simply another anime, as charming as it is, which is about girls living. The comedy is light at best, nothing major. It’s fine. Non Non Biyori 1

That’s all I can really say. It’s fine. Which is why it gets a bronze. Chances are, in a year I won’t remember what happened in this anime. It was sweet and charming in its own way I guess.

If you liked this, I’d recommend Barakumon. It has more plot but the same issues of someone moving from a city to the countryside.

Tayutama is a Visual Novel Adaptation developed by Lump of Sugar.

I have so many mixed feelings for this anime. I spent much of it feeling like something was missing. Something magic ingredient which would make me fall in love with these characters and the story, but failed too. Instead I found myself angry and swept away in the drama of the tale. It made me want to cry, made me want to scream. Love is a tale which is strong in this anime. All favours of it. Broken hearts, unrequited love and doomed love. My heart ached so much for some of the characters. This was also another harem which didn’t involve all the girls in love with the male lead but instead having a various a ray of friendships types. There are still a lot of relationship drama though. Drama aside, almost everything else was lacking in some minor way which lowered the anime’s rating to a silver for me.
Tayutama 4Mashiro is local deity. Awakened by an accident, she wishes to make it so her kind, the Tayutai, can coexist with humans peacefully. She ends up living with the male lead and declaring him her wife. Due to a promise he made when she was young, not expecting her to grow to an adult the next day. The relationship between Mashiro and Yuuri is sweet. He will do anything for her and loves her very much. To the point where he can be a real jerk to everyone else around him.
Tayutama
In particular to his childhood friend who has a massive crush on him. He’s got her firmly friend-zoned though. Arguably she doesn’t tell him but the amount of times she is about to, or she invites him out with the intention of doing so only for Mashiro to get in the way is almost ridiculous. I feel so sorry for her. Especially with evil guy whispering her ears all the time. Trust me there were some episodes where I really hate Yuuri and just want to punch his head in. Everyone ones it. His best friend knows it. Mashiro knows it.

‘Ameri’s just my childhood friend’
‘She is a woman first!’

 – Conversation where Mashiro is trying to get him to understand. Damn right Mashiro! Ameri is a woman first and you, Yuuri are being a inconsiderate jerk!

Especially when he does finally clue in and refuses to acknowledge it. ‘Its not important’. It bloody is! She is your childhood friend. You can’t leave her to wallow in self pity. Something which really comes back to bite him him in the ass when she sides with the bad guy. Or rather he takes advantage of her state. Leaving Mashiro to have to wake Ameri up from her dream world where Mashiro never existed.

Tayutama 2
Oh how I laughed and cried. This is not the first anime I have watched where the childhood friend loses out but this anime takes it to extremes. As for the other aspects. The fighting evil/defeating the big three was a bit of a disappointment. One stole pants because she wanted to try them on. One was actually two and had a couple argument before attracting themselves to the leads step sister. The other, he did cause problems which ended up in a fight which destroys tokyo tower. Because that wasn’t a trope I hadn’t seen in a while lol. Ending is very sad as well.
Tayutama 3
One thing that is different? About this anime is the style. To me its very dated. The eyes are big, the hair is proof and the design is very old. Its cute but their is a 90s/early 00s feeling to this anime which is strange considering it was made in 2009. To me though it does adds to the slowness of the story / reasons against it.  So silver.

WataMote is a manga adaptation written by Nico Tanigawa.

Well i was in the mood for something different and something different was what I got. This anime is a hard one to rate. It is genuinely quite hard to tell whether it is a comedy with some very dark humour, or a study of how social anxiety can isolate and paralyse someone. I’m putting it is as silver because either way, this is a good anime. Just one which has some slightly scary concepts for people to get around. There were a lot of comments about watching it the hope that the main leads life would improve. Waiting for that magical anime moment when someone finally thinks to befriend her. Spoiler, but that never quite happens. Or does it?WataMote-Episode-3-English-Dubbed
Meet our lead. Female. Tomoko Kuroki. In her first year of high school and a massive failure at life. Well, not, she does suffers from some problems which make it very hard for her to communicate with the people around her. She’s shy, awkward and doesn’t really take care of herself which doesn’t really help the situation. She has about very few people in the world who acknowledge her existence. Her mother, who really needs to take this girl aside and give her a talk on how the world works!

My own mother had a few conversations with me around her age about life and the importance of fitting it. But I had friends. She doesn’t. Ignoring her one friend from middle school. Yuu having graduated from sixth grade syndrome and grown up. On her way to becoming a woman. Kuroki on the other hand… not so much. I do wonder if she is based on a actual person or on the authors own experiences. Either way, I feel sorry for them. There is nothing worse than wanting friends but being unable to fit in enough to make them.
watamote5-1The person Kuroko is closest to is quite honestly her brother. She unlike her, has friends and it considerably more normal than his sister. Though both had black bags under their eyes. Skin condition maybe? They are both gamers though. Their relationship is not a warm, loving one. But a fighting siblings one. He puts up with her basically, but they are both mean to each other. I think he does get she is lonely though.

The situations themselves can be funny but this anime more shows how life is for some people. The world can be scary place, so it is that surprising so many people love anime and games where they can be them? It is also refreshing to see the main character as a girl. The stereotype for Hikikomoris and other social problems are males, but girls have just as many problems. If not more with our society insists they behave.

Rokujouma no Shinryakusha is a light novel adaptation written by Takehaya and illustrated by Poco.

I think I’ll give this a bronze. It’s not brilliant but I did enjoy watching this. But I think its weak points over ride that. It suffered from a lot lack luster plot points and a couple uncompleted ones. The red superhero team for example, just what happened to them? I spent that either episode going ‘um, what happened to those guys?’. They show up and then nothing is said again about them. Plus it started the ‘fanservice’ episodes way too fast for my opinion. But i guess it is a harem anime, so that’s fine in the grand working of things. Still somehow I don’t see myself remembering much about this anime in a few years.

1280x720-bNg It was refreshing to watch a harem which was actually quite enjoyable and didn’t have characters flashing there boobs every moment of the day. Which was even more relaxing considering most of the characters had a loli look about them. The main character wasn’t a pervert either. Occasionally a little dumb, but Satomi was a nice enough lead. He had a bit more personalty to him than a lot of main characters. He was still your pretty much typical guy but he wasn’t a complete carbon copy. The reason he has 7 girls of various character types around him was actually fairly unusual for once. Not your normal everyone falls in love with a guy anime.

The 7 girls are a little overwhelming though. For both the viewer and the male lead. They all have reasons for wanting the room he lives in. It seems to be a special place in space and time where energy gathers. One girl wants to protect, two what to use it to make weapons to invade, one is a ghost and its her home. Everyone has reasons for being there but before they can cause too much damage, the land lady steps in and makes them agree to do it without force. And so the team end up mostly living together in a small room, playing cards to decide who has the right to win the land. Sufficient to say, this get boring for them pretty early on. Actually winning the room almost becomes an almost forgotten plot point after the first few episodes. The girls settling down to reside in the room together refusing to give up. Yuriko literally living in the closet.

vJtE7lS

Of the girls, I like Kiriha the best. A girl who id descented from the earth people who have lived underground for many years and what to invade the surface so they can life there again. She is the most mature of the bunch (In both personalty and bust size) and her story line is my favourite. Partly because its well thought out and I like her how strong she is. Unlike the magical girl who is a whiner. Yurika is nice enough but she does get on my nerves. The ghost is tolerable though has her moments, same with Tulip. Ruth is fine but doesn’t really play much of a main part.

I approve of Satomi’s main interest, his sempai, the lovely Harumi. She is sweet and does like him back. She is also described as being a ‘Yamato nadeshiko’. A new term I have just learned which basically means the personification of the ideal Japanese woman. I’m sure if you are reading this, you know the type, Japanese anime is full of them. Back to their relationship, something which is important in this anime, the guy isn’t in love with the lot of them, but instead is good friends with them all. Though a few have crushes on him. Satomi is hinted to like Harumi the most. They just don’t really know how to go out. Mostly because any adventure inadvertently ends up involving the rest of the cast as well. Amusingly.

rokujouma_no_shinryakusha-02-yurika-kiriha-theia-ruth-transfer_students-sparkles-invasion

All in all, this is a entertaining take on the Harem genre with no ecchi for once! But it tries to combine too many tropes and plot ideas at once, watering down the entertainment value. Complete with mostly underdeveloped characters and uncompleted plots, I give this a bronze.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia is a manga adaptation written by Maybe.

This is anime is a strong silver to me. It is a lovely story with a strong storyline which doesn’t really faulter. The characters are not as strong but they were entertaining enough to keep me focused on the screen. Something which can be hard in some animes when the characters are weak/boring. There are no episodes which feel like fillers or out of place. The ecchi moments, while there are not completely in your face and they do a good job of tying up loose ends. Tasogare 2So the plot? Well. Yuuko is a ghost. A very famous ghost at a private school. The private school is a unique place, having been built and expanded to the point where the school is a maze of classrooms and corridors. Rooms which have been reassigned to storage, and corridors which don’t actually  lead anywhere. Basically the perfect place for supernatural stories to take place.

Yuuko is trapped in this large school and basically creates ghost story’s because she gets bored and does things which scare people who can’t see her. Like play the piano in the music room etc. She’s not intentionally trying to scare people but the ghost stories do me she can manifest in scary forms due to their believes.  Which i quite like the idea of. Its not necessarily her being evil, because she is not, but the fear which the school builds up due to her presence which makes her seem like a monster to a lot of the student body. Thing is though, she doesn’t remember her past or how she died.Tasogare 1

Enter Niiya. A freshman who for some reason can see Yuuko. Niiya then agrees to help her investigate the 7 mystery’s around her and her past. Along with two other girls who join the club. One for fun, Okonogi, and the other because she too can see Yuuko and doesn’t trust her, Kanoe.

I like how they introduced the characters, I thought it was a very unique and fun way to met them. We met Okonogi first. Okonogi can’t actually see Yuuko but believes she exists. She joins the club after they ‘save’ her from a ghost she summonsed (completely made up by Yuuko being bored). She’s the one who finds the ghost stories from them to investigate and of course has a massive crush on Niiya. She’s gullible, silly and a bit oblivious. The series opens up to her talking to herself in the club room with Yuuko trying to haunt her and failing as Okonogi takes no notice of it. Its brilliant in so many ways.
Tas
Do I like her? Most of the time. She’s got determination, I’ll give her that. Fighting, literally occasionally with a love rival she can not see. Because of this she often inadvertently gets in the way of Yuuko and Niiya having dates etc. She is spunky but her character doesn’t really play much role other than to be a more active love rival. She has little to no developments, not that the others have much but it always pushes a anime down in my opinion if they do not take proper care of their characters.

She has more personalty than the rest of them. Ignoring Yuuko. Niiya is your typical shounen boy. Loyal, whole hearted and a little oblivious to the fact most of the girls around him have crushes on them. Kanoe plays the part of serious but easily embarrassed love rival. She also looks a lot like Yuuko for a very good reason in my books. But in all honesty the characters were not very good or special in the anime. The animation is also pretty standard.

What makes this anime entertaining is the story, which I’m not going to give too many spoilers away for. Simply to say, its not quite only Yuuko haunting the school and the reason why is very clever to me. I love ghost stories so this one really ran up my alley.

My one beef was with the ending. I really liked how they were setting it up. Everything had been resolved and revealed. They had been on a date. It was all sad and than… Call me silly but I would have preferred the sad ending indicated by what they were setting up. Its a ghost story! Also everything had been sorted so it was a good end. So why did they feel the need to force a happy one? So many issues with having the ending this way. You can’t even say ‘to lead on to a second season’. A second season doing what? They achieved all their objectives!

So Silver. Good story and tastefully done. Bad characters and slightly disappointing ending due to genre.

Ano Natsu de Matteru is an original anime series written by Yosuke Kuroda, with original character design by Taraku Uon.

In summary, a typical anime about the summer in high school, complete with trip to Okinawa and four triangles. With the twist of one of them is an alien and the fact they are decide to make a film over the summer.

Ano Natsu 1

This anime has a similar feeling to it as Anohana. Except not as good. admittedly though, Anohana is a tough one to beat though in this genre. Ano Natsu de Matteru is a enjoyable if typical drama. The male lead, Kaito is a typical lead with very little personality and his main trait being that he loves of filmmaking. He falls in love with a new student at his school. Ichika, an alien who is searching for a place in her memories and ends up living at his house. As you know, so many animes work. Kaito doesn’t quite live alone but to clear that end up his sister goes on a work trip for the summer to Boliva of all places so its just the two of them. And his friends when they come barging round.

Ano Natsu 3

I’m not going to lie, I spent most of this anime not really liking Ichika. She’s very bland. With even less to say about her than the male lead. Apart from the fact she goes beyond in love with him and almost to obsessive early one. Following him whenever she sees him with other people. Though she doesn’t seem to quite realise it at first. I find her tiresome and I’m not sure how much she actually adds to the story ignoring being an alien. Also I found my self taking Kanna’s side in the fight for Kaito’s heart. Ichiro just appears out of nowhere and steals it without giving Kanna a chance. But I guess that life. If it hadn’t been a alien, it would have been something else I think sadly.

Honestly the amount of time spend on the characters is enough. They are a pretty pathetic lot really. Massive love rectangle between the lot of them, with an added two girls for the okinawa episodes. I quite like the fact none of them end up with who they want though. More realistic that way. The character I wished we had learned more about was Remon/Lemon, though I realise this anime was the wrong genre for that.

Ano Natsu 2

Lemon is a young looking girl who is actually much older than she appears, though her actual age is never specified. She is introduced as Ichika’s classmate who for unknown reasons wears a different uniform to the rest of the school. It quickly becomes apparent she knows far more than she lets on. It is discovered eventually she works for the men in black but its an sideline. She is mostly in charge of filming the events which are going on. She is the most interesting one to me and I wish we had learnt more about her. Like why she was there in the first place? Does she spend every summer at that school or what?

As far as the other aspects of this anime goes, the action is so random and very clique in its reasoning. It does spice up the anime though. Otherwise its just a lot of tears as everyone is in love with someone who is in love with someone else. Part from the main pair. With some summer cheer as they have fun occasionally.

I give this anime a bronze. It was enjoyable but nothing special nor unique and I spent much of it disliking the main characters which always knocks a show down a few pegs.

Inu X Boku SS is a Manga Adaptation, orginally written by  Cocoa Fujiwara.

Honestly, I’m not sure what happened with this show. Given the manga, it had the potential to be the next fruits basket with a cast of interesting and well developed characters and relationships. But the anime just does not measure up at all. The manga ran from 2009 to 2014, so while it was made before the manga was finished, there was still a good portion of the manga written in order to make this a good show. Its only 12 episodes after all. Maybe they were hoping for a second season but Inu x Boku SS was a fairly mundane and uninteresting anime. Entertainment at the minimum, all the jokes and potential there but not quite carried off.

We have a show about rich demon descendants who live in a apartment with their bodyguards and all the antics that brings. A girl named Ririchiyo Shirakiin moves into the Ayakashikan hoping for some peace and quiet. Instead, she finds herself with the service of the Secret Service agent, Sōshi Miketsukami who loves her very very much. Seriously Miketsukami is like a puppy when it comes to Ririchiyo. Willing to do anything to stay by her side. But it gets a little tiresome to be honest. Actually that word pretty much sums up how I feel about a lot of the characters ‘tiresome’. All their indivudual character gags are played so much and so little development the comedy fast becomes yawn worthy. Its not surprising only one season was made.

This anime just doesn’t seem to want to know what it is. Its got supernatural creatures who can fight, trying to live fairly normal lives with all the normal things that happen in a dysfunctional family. However it just is boring. The fights aren’t interesting and have no real purpose the majority of the time. Other than to declare, ‘hey remember we have powers! look at us!’. And the ‘normal’ everyday stuff often feels out of place. Like its not normal. Not even for them. Something is missing. I just can’t put my finger on it, other that a lot of the elements in this anime as lacking in entertainment value. It tries to be dark and funny at the same time and just doesn’t pull it off.  It’s not good enough to just give characters issues and throw in some gags for entertainment.

So. Bronze. It had all the ingredients were there but failed to make anything particularly good. Just your standard pretty show.302975-aliya06

I watched this anime while I was still pretty green to the whole ecchi/harem genre layout. So we have a ‘beautiful’ noble, Lady Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière, who can’t use her magic properly and summons a human from another world to world as a familiar. Aka something to channel her power though. As a side note, she is well known for not being able to use her magic well and was nicknamed “Louise the Zero” by his classmates because of this. Lousie is a spoilt girl who honestly is still high up on my ‘Anime girls I would love to slap’ list. This lady is queen of being a tsudere. I don’t care that her type is tsudere, she’s a bitch who needs taking down a few notches.
As for the poor guy who gets summoned, Saito Hiraga he ends up with an abusive woman for a ‘master’. Because he is a familiar, the proof being the runes on his hand, he is basically treated like an animal by Louise. And like a pervert because he occasionally looks at women’s boobs. You know that thing all young single men do when its practically shoved in front of them. Lousie beats him often and its not always funny. Heck, the only reason he can talk and understand them all is because Lousie miscast a silencing spell, giving him the ability to understand them.
Whats more, turns out it actually a pretty good familiar. The runes on his hand means he some kind of super solider able to use any weapon given to him with a high level of skill.  Including a Jet fighter plane which fell though to that world once. But does he try to stop Lousie beating him? No! Does he fall in love with her? Yes!
Wait what? I have some serious issues with this. When did they fall in love? Saito has opinions over that Louise. I swear its some like of Stockholm syndrome and if it was the other way round this anime would be getting a lot more hate. Why is it suddenly sexy/funny for a flat chest little girl to beat the hell out of some poor bloke who has no chance of getting away? At least most tsudere character’s signant other wasn’t forced into a relationship. (Yes he fell in love, but he had to live with her and such for the series). At the end of season 2, they get married. I didn’t bother going back for season 3.
Now, all being said, I do remember sort of enjoying the anime. Its very beautiful and the characters were cool. I just hate the main girl is all. So Bronze.
