Ano Natsu de Matteru is an original anime series written by Yosuke Kuroda, with original character design by Taraku Uon.

In summary, a typical anime about the summer in high school, complete with trip to Okinawa and four triangles. With the twist of one of them is an alien and the fact they are decide to make a film over the summer.

Ano Natsu 1

This anime has a similar feeling to it as Anohana. Except not as good. admittedly though, Anohana is a tough one to beat though in this genre. Ano Natsu de Matteru is a enjoyable if typical drama. The male lead, Kaito is a typical lead with very little personality and his main trait being that he loves of filmmaking. He falls in love with a new student at his school. Ichika, an alien who is searching for a place in her memories and ends up living at his house. As you know, so many animes work. Kaito doesn’t quite live alone but to clear that end up his sister goes on a work trip for the summer to Boliva of all places so its just the two of them. And his friends when they come barging round.

Ano Natsu 3

I’m not going to lie, I spent most of this anime not really liking Ichika. She’s very bland. With even less to say about her than the male lead. Apart from the fact she goes beyond in love with him and almost to obsessive early one. Following him whenever she sees him with other people. Though she doesn’t seem to quite realise it at first. I find her tiresome and I’m not sure how much she actually adds to the story ignoring being an alien. Also I found my self taking Kanna’s side in the fight for Kaito’s heart. Ichiro just appears out of nowhere and steals it without giving Kanna a chance. But I guess that life. If it hadn’t been a alien, it would have been something else I think sadly.

Honestly the amount of time spend on the characters is enough. They are a pretty pathetic lot really. Massive love rectangle between the lot of them, with an added two girls for the okinawa episodes. I quite like the fact none of them end up with who they want though. More realistic that way. The character I wished we had learned more about was Remon/Lemon, though I realise this anime was the wrong genre for that.

Ano Natsu 2

Lemon is a young looking girl who is actually much older than she appears, though her actual age is never specified. She is introduced as Ichika’s classmate who for unknown reasons wears a different uniform to the rest of the school. It quickly becomes apparent she knows far more than she lets on. It is discovered eventually she works for the men in black but its an sideline. She is mostly in charge of filming the events which are going on. She is the most interesting one to me and I wish we had learnt more about her. Like why she was there in the first place? Does she spend every summer at that school or what?

As far as the other aspects of this anime goes, the action is so random and very clique in its reasoning. It does spice up the anime though. Otherwise its just a lot of tears as everyone is in love with someone who is in love with someone else. Part from the main pair. With some summer cheer as they have fun occasionally.

I give this anime a bronze. It was enjoyable but nothing special nor unique and I spent much of it disliking the main characters which always knocks a show down a few pegs.

Shakugan no Shana Review

Shakugan no Shana is a light novel adaptation written by Yashichiro Takahashi.
An example of the fact that even if an anime manages to get three seasons and a movie, that doesn’t necessarily mean its any good.

Its not that this was a bad anime. But Shakugan no Shana failed to leave much of a lasting impression on me. Its just your standard action story. Normal boy turns out of have potential and girl comes along to use that potential. Girl who is powerful and oh, falls in love with boy. Visually Shakugan no Shana is impressive. The colours are wonderful and the magic is done excellently. Lots of really cool effects and unique designs. Not just character designs but world designs as well.

So what was the problem? This anime had some fairly cool plot ideas that had a lot of potential. Shana is a demon hunter whose job is to fight demon-like beings that consume human lives. Shana is a fiery girl who seems cold on the outside but as the series progress Yuji’s influence on her lets her makes friends and grow as a person.  In order to reduce the damage done by demons, those who die are turned into shadows of their former selves. Once the flame within them that represents their remaining life goes out, they fade from existence. This should have been Yuji’s fate too, but when he discovers he holds a special power that reignites his flame. Together they join forces in her ongoing mission to maintain the balance between the ordinary world and the supernatural. Making friends and enemies along the way.

I just remember liking the series but it didn’t have as effect on me as others have. Shana having the potential to use her powers to the fullest without dying and learning out to live in the ordinary world are all key points of this anime. Shana lived separate from them for so long, she struggles to understand how things work in his world. Plus she’s a tsundere. Which may be a factor against this anime, I’m not really a tsundere fan. Shana is contracted to a being known as Alastor, whos power fuels her blade. Alastor serves as her father figure and is an interesting character in his own right.

Basically. Bronze. Give it a go if you want, but its not something I plan on re-watching or even recommending to people. I guess the best way to describe Shakugan no Shana is dull. An anime which replied too much on special effects and didn’t spent enough time making a decent plot. shakugannoshana

Elemental Gelade is a manga adaptation written by Azuma Mayumi.

One of the earliest anime i ever watched, I remember watching this with enjoyment but there ware some pretty heavy issues in it. Notably slavery and the rights of those who can turn into weapons. Yes, that it right. In this world there are living weapons who appear human but can transform into swords of great destruction. hey are called the Eden Raid. The only real sign they are different to normal humans is a jewel located somewhere on there bodies.

Enter our main boy, Coud Van Giruet. Coud is a pirate. He’s not the brightest one of the bunch but like most heroes, he has a good heart. During a raid he accidentally awakens, Reverie Metherlence also known as Ren. A quiet girl who is seemingly anti social. In truth it is because she hates humans. Due to her being a powerful weapon, they always just use her. Coud on the other hand treats her like a normal girl and even fights to protect her when her pursuers appear. Impressed/touched by this, Edel transforms for him and helps him. This leads to the two of them going on a adventure to try to change the world. The Arc Line want to purchase Ren due to her being of a strong bloodline, but Coud refuses. Wanting to protect Ren. Coud is very loyal and the two work well together. You will find yourself rooting for their fragile romance to bloom.

One of the best characters however is Cisqua. A kick ass short girl who has a ridiculous arsenal of weapons hidden in her clothes and hat. She’s brave and slightly unpredictable, unlike most of the characters who are very much what you get. While she works for  Arc Aile, she doesn’t use a Eden Raid because she thinks its wrong to force someone to fight for you. Though it is debatable if how she let her candidate down was hurtful or not.

The art in this is pretty standard. Its well designed and has some good effects in it. Though they do re-use the transformation scenes. The main down side for most people seems to be the ending is very clique. However this was in my early days so to me it was a good ending. Really what the matter with a happy ending every now and again?

All in all, Elemental Gelade is your standard teenage boy saves the world story and gets the girl. Its full of action. Its full of emotions and has some pretty serious issues about how people treat other people. Just because the Eden Raid can turn into weapsons, does that give people the right to treat them like tools? Either way this anime is gold to me and I fully recommend people give it a try. In some ways it has a lot more charm to it then a lot of more recent animes in my opinion.

I wanted to like this. It was pretty. Visually, Amnesia was stunning, which some of the most unique designs I had seen in a while. I would also like to comment at this stage that I watched Amnesia soon after getting back into anime again. This almost made me stop and back out.

The only way I can justify this is that it works better in a game format when you are playing the Heroine instead of watching her. Most of the boys are dicks to her. Also Shin killed sort of killed someone. No he didn’t. There is so much angst in this anime! I imagine that is the reason it is so popular with teenage girls. To me, its honestly just grating.

The girl is having memory problems and none of them notice. Wait a tick! The girl you love isn’t acting her normal self? None of you notice? She barely specks up for herself. Something which again I assume is to do with the fact this was adapted from a game where you would pick the responses. I hope. Its hard to tell if people actually think girls should act like this or if its just a bad character design they like to use.

The mystery element is the Heroine’s memory. Kind of. There is more to it then that. I actually guessed what was happening and looked it up. The plot for the mystery is not bad at all. But the crappy attempt at romance, and a flimsy led female character just made this almost unbearable to me.

So to me. Stone. Its not even worth a bronze in my eyes. I know people will disagree but this is my opinion. I shall now continue to live my life.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Review

Producers: Geneon Universal Entertainment, Seven Arcs, A Line, FUNimation Entertainment

This anime was the second ever Magical Girl Anime I watched, the first being Sailor Moon. Nanoha was something, is still something, that I have a special place in my heart for even years after watching it. I squealed with delight once I learned it is getting a fourth series this summer (2015) and I am eagerly looking forward to seeing how the writers combat the change in Magical Girl genre. Will they change their formula or stay true to the Nanoha franchise?

So Nanoha. Nanoha is a sweet pure heart girl who ends up on a quest to save the earth. I didn’t say the plot was original, I said the show had a special place in my heart. Nanoha is such a heart warming character, who more times than not, tries to make friends with her enemies. She is a power mage, despite being from earth and forms a close bond with the boy she is trying to help, Yuuno.

The first series is set while she is still very young. Not even in junior high yet. Nanoha stumbles upon an injured talking ferret after hearing his telepathic cries for help. The ferret turns out to be Yuuno, an archaeologist and mage from another world who had accidentally scattered the dangerous Jewel Seeds throughout Earth. Stuck as a ferret until his powers return, Yuuno recruits young Nanoha to find the Jewels Seeds before they fall into the hands of evil. Granting her a red jewel which allows to use magic to defeat the monsters. However someone else is looking for the Seeds as well.

Enter, Fate. Fate’s mother is the villain for much of the first season. Wanting the seeds for her own gains and not afraid to use her daughter in order to do so. Fate is stubborn, strong and bad ass. She also comes with her own fox familiar who helps look after her. Arf.

The first season is cute and heart warming with some sad moments. Eventually ending with Fate’s mother defeated, Nanoha becoming friends and Fate getting arrested for her mothers evil deeds. Yuuno leaving Nanoha to go home. Nanoha left to her own devices on earth. Though she is able to keep in touch with Fate.

mahou-shoujo-lyrical-nanoha-asSix months later and Second two starts :Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A (2005)

We are introduced to Nanoha, who is eagerly awaiting the day she can be reunited with Fate. However her peaceful life is once again shattered as a powerful mage attacks. Fate appearing to help. With a new found enemy, Nanoha must once again team up with Yunno, Fate, Arf and more to keep her home safe.

This season was sadder than the first in many ways, though it does have a happy conclusion. A group of violent mages have been attacking anything with magic power for their own goals and when they attack Nanoha, they set out to stop them before they can hurt anyone else. Fate enrolls at Nanoha’s school and there is a very cute side plot about all their friends. Including one very sick friend, Hayate Yagami, who turns out to be connected to the mysterious mages. Another im230px-Magical_Girl_Lyrical_Nanoha_A's_DVD_volume_1_coverportant thing is that the mages are so powerful, Nanoha and Fate have to upgrade their equipment to a much more dangerous version. They are both warned not to over do it or it could cause massive damage to their bodies.

Back to Hayate. Hayate is a lovely character and as sweet as Nanoha and Fate. Which is partly how she has gained the loyalty of these mages. Hayate is suffering from a family curse, with no obvious way to fix it. As the story moves on, we learn more and more about the intentions of the mages.

As stated earlier, there is a happy ending and everything is fixed. But not before some pretty heavy angst considering these girls are all still 9 years old. The ending points to the future.

And onMagical_Girl_Lyrical_Nanoha_StrikerS_Chroniclewards we go to season 3. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS (2007)

Set 10 years after. Yes. 10 years. Our girls are all grown up now and teaching the next generation of fights. All with some really cool weaspons of their own. Nanoha is a famous hero and well respected teacher. And things have not been easy. She may not be the naive little girl any more but she is still a strong believer in right and wrong. And still able to break the hearts of many.

Seeing these girls grow was a fantastic idea and they did not ignore the ten years in between. Nanoha has suffered. She overworked her body and due to the upgraded system of her weapon, almost died. We learn this as the guys explain to the students just why Nanoha is so strict with them and doesn’t let them overwork too much. She almost lost the ability to walk. To fly.

Nanaho is a strong character who evolves and grows with the challenges she faces, while never losing that part of her with is truly special.

And I look forward to watching the fourth instalment. Four years later. How will Nanaho be now?

Anywhere, this little universe is Platinum for me.

I remember this anime primarily for the art. Which was, and still is to this day, beautiful. The sword fights are more like dances than anything else. And trust me, like any good Samurai series, there are plenty of them.

Two very different Samurai Mugen and Jin, who annoy each other to great lengths, end up having to work side by side. Honestly, its their own faults. They get themselves into a bar brawl and are about to be executed when a girl saves them. A girl who is a typical anime ditz and can barely take care of herself. But. now she’s got two bodyguards who will help her achieve her goals.
Right?<br If they don't kill themselves first. Or arguably her. No, I'm being mean. Kasumi Fuu, while a ditz is not too bad when compared to a lot of anime heroines. She's quirky, clever and a likeable character. The story is well padded out with well written side plots and funny moments. And is worth a watch for the Art alone though 🙂
Its gets Gold from me.
