This is was a delight to watch. The main character Yurie is adorable and a real sweetheart who ultimately does her best in the new role she has found herself in. The show is heavily influenced by the Shinto believe that there is a good for everything in existence. One morning Yurie wakes up and knows she is a god. Not quite understanding or believing what has happened, she accidently summons a typhoon and from there her new life as a god begins. Alongside being a middle school student.

What’s really amusing is that everyone just accepts the fact she is a god and the first middle school student god. Not to mention teasesher mercilessly (in a good natured way). Kamichu is a hopelessly sweet anime which is hard to pin down in one genre. We have aliens, cats and boats from ww2 which all need Yurie’s help and she goes about it happily. With the occasional hitch in her own life.kamichu 2.png

She is still a mostly normal girl though and has to deal with her crush and trying to keep up in school. Her two friends are with her throughout her adventures, one who has grown up in a shrine and understands matters of the gods a little better than Yurie and another who unfortunately often ends up being possessed by gods to do their bidding. For example putting on a rock performance.

There is nothing which fazes these girls.

Music wise, it’s good. The opening song suits the anime well. The animation itself has its own flare which makes its unique. Not in a way which is bad, I actually really liked the anime style. It’s great to see a style where the characters actually more with a bit more freedom. The way the characters move really adds to the flavour of the anime.

I don’t quite think it makes my favourites but I certainly enjoyed the anime more than some I’ve been watching lately.

Aldnoah Zero Review

Aldnoah Zero71297l

Completed 2015

Type: TV
Episodes: 24/24
Aired: Jul 6, 2014 to March 2015
A Manga adaptation, written by Pinakes

Aldnoah Zero is not a bad anime. But it suffers from some fatal flaws. The anime has a dramatic and sober air to it. With a plot that had potential to be something great but then something happened and I’m not sure what. It dropped. The action became generic. More generic than normal for an anime which involves one boy being able to defeat aliens no one else can. The plot as well went from very interesting, to a tale which we have all seen before in one shape or another.

The art was bland. Nothing special, the same crisp lines we have been seeing for a while. I was actually expecting it to be by the same director/designer of Owari no Serph but it is not so. There are occasional when I feel you could have copy and pasted the characters into each others stories and it would have had little effect.

Characters, like the art are your standard breed. Like someone just looked up what characters do you need in an Mecha anime. The Princess is bathed in a white dress, blonde with a heart as big as her green eyes. She loves everyone she meets but there are forces working against her. Spends much of the anime in cryogenics.Aldnoah Zero 1

Her lady in waiting is a young girl who is naive and scared of everything. With the other girls, despite being soldiers they remain high school girls pretty much. Unable to do much, Even the main guys sister who was in the army from the beginning wails pathetically when things aren’t going right. No character growth at all. Ignoring one girl who is a plot point, but even her growth is your standard *yawn* seen it a million times.

The story is spilt between the two sides. Earth and Mars. Mars is a monarchy and as such is all proper and prim. No feeling and lot of multiplication and backstabbing. We watch as earth born Slaine finds to find his place in the Mars army to help his beloved princess. Facing discrimination along the way for being terran born. Slaine rarely showing emotion other than towards his princess and is very resourceful.

On the Earth side we watch Inaho, an emotionless boy who has fallen for the princess, fight to protect his friends and survive. All stoic and endlessly brooding. Knowing things that no one seems to understand. Either the characters nor the audience. I assure to give him some kind of mythical untouchable air. It makes a change from the cheeky rascal we are usually given except, with Slaine personally being so similar…

I only have one question for this anime. What happened to the originality we saw in the first season? This turned into another carbon copy which I would not recommend to anyone. So Bronze

Inu X Boku SS is a Manga Adaptation, orginally written by  Cocoa Fujiwara.

Honestly, I’m not sure what happened with this show. Given the manga, it had the potential to be the next fruits basket with a cast of interesting and well developed characters and relationships. But the anime just does not measure up at all. The manga ran from 2009 to 2014, so while it was made before the manga was finished, there was still a good portion of the manga written in order to make this a good show. Its only 12 episodes after all. Maybe they were hoping for a second season but Inu x Boku SS was a fairly mundane and uninteresting anime. Entertainment at the minimum, all the jokes and potential there but not quite carried off.

We have a show about rich demon descendants who live in a apartment with their bodyguards and all the antics that brings. A girl named Ririchiyo Shirakiin moves into the Ayakashikan hoping for some peace and quiet. Instead, she finds herself with the service of the Secret Service agent, Sōshi Miketsukami who loves her very very much. Seriously Miketsukami is like a puppy when it comes to Ririchiyo. Willing to do anything to stay by her side. But it gets a little tiresome to be honest. Actually that word pretty much sums up how I feel about a lot of the characters ‘tiresome’. All their indivudual character gags are played so much and so little development the comedy fast becomes yawn worthy. Its not surprising only one season was made.

This anime just doesn’t seem to want to know what it is. Its got supernatural creatures who can fight, trying to live fairly normal lives with all the normal things that happen in a dysfunctional family. However it just is boring. The fights aren’t interesting and have no real purpose the majority of the time. Other than to declare, ‘hey remember we have powers! look at us!’. And the ‘normal’ everyday stuff often feels out of place. Like its not normal. Not even for them. Something is missing. I just can’t put my finger on it, other that a lot of the elements in this anime as lacking in entertainment value. It tries to be dark and funny at the same time and just doesn’t pull it off.  It’s not good enough to just give characters issues and throw in some gags for entertainment.

So. Bronze. It had all the ingredients were there but failed to make anything particularly good. Just your standard pretty show.302975-aliya06

Dog Days is a original anime created by Masaki Tsuzuki. Who is also known for working on Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Now, I love Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, but this did not inspired any similar kind of attachment. The first season was good. I really enjoyed the first season. It was quirky and fun. Sure the girls clothes occasionally came off, but it was in a comical way.

Season 2 on the other hand, turned these into lolicon type scenes Including within the first 2 episodes one of the most pornographic magical girl transformations I have ever seen. Tencale type stuff and all. Which considering this anime as a very children aimed feel to it and the fact the girl was meant to be able 13 was too much for me to really continue. So I am reviewing season 1. Because I did enjoy season 1.

Dog days is about a young athletic boy called Clique, who accidentally accepts a invitation to become the hero of a magical land full of animal hybrids. Clique is a easy going boy whose passion is gymnastics and is dog_days-08-shinkuoriginally planning to spent his holiday training for the next tournament. His family overseas for various reasons. Once he arrives at the kingdom, which is your standard fall of building into magic circle shindig, we met the pink haired, dog hybrid, Princess  Millhiore of the Biscotti Republic.  The well loved and respected Princess asks his help to defeat the cat-like Galette Lion Dominion.

Here is where this adog daysnime gets interesting and takes on a very childlike feel. No one dyes in wars in this world. Wars are more like athletic competitions which are used to decide issues between countries. There hasn’t been a real war in hundreds of years. When the soldiers get injured they turn into balls and are escorted of the battlefield to recover. Though this doesn’t happen to Clique because he is human so he needs to be more careful. As he is tolddog days 2 by Galette’s Gaul. Who, at this point, is the only other guy about Clique’s age.

This is also where the whole girls loosing their clothes comes into play. If the soldiers armour gets hit but not hard enough to hurt them, their armour disappears instead, leaving them nude. So lots of embarrassments and blushes from the female soldiers when they get defeated but not enough to turn them into animal balls.

The kingdom of Biscotti is a beautiful place. The art is pretty and full of bright colours. All adding to the childlike charm of it. The main theme of this anime is friendship. Particular between the two rival princesses who were once close but now are distance for reasons Millhoire is unsure off and great sadden by. The blooming relationship between Clique and Millhoire is adorable as they spend morning playing fribee and other games. They are adorable together and all the innocent feels let me get over the occasionally bit of random nakedness.

Then season 2 happened. Which involves Clique female cousin and female best friend, as if we needed more girls to this anime, coming along for their second adventure. As previously stated, Becky, the best friend get given one of the most awkward and uncomfortable transformation scenes I have seen, especially considering how innocent this anime is most of the time. I watched the first 4 episodes before giving up. It was just boring, basically the same as season 1 but with a new more characters and no developments other than the conclusion of season 1. Oh and now Clique has more girls trying to get his attention.

So season one gets a silver. It had a solid plot, with an entertaining storyline and cool characters. But what the hell happened to season 2?

La Corda D’Oro is a video game adaptation developed by Koei.

I had almost forgotten this anime classes as the genre as the likes of Kamagami no Asobi and Amnesia. A collection of boys all trying the gain the heart of one girl, Hino. Why? Because I watched this early on before I was aware of this genre being a thing. La Corda D’Oro is a fantastic anime and one which I personally was very touched by.

Hino is a normal student at a elite school where the school body is spilt into the two sections. The normal students and the music students. A collection of gifted students who focus their attention on perfecting their music.   Every year, the school has a music competition. On day Hino bumps into the school fairy Lili. Lili decides that Hino has talent and want her to take part in the competition. Because she can’t actually play any instruments, he grants her a music violin which allows her to play any tune from her heart.

corda-d-oro.jpgShe doesn’t actually want to play at first. But Lili is determined and after listening to everyone else play she decides to take part. As the series  goes on, Hino is amazed by the magic of the violin and as the competition goes on, she becomes more and more attached to the people she is playing with. While all the boys are love interests, there are more who have more of a role than others. Personally my favourite boy is Ryotaro. Ryotaro is in the normal section, head of the soccer team and also Hino’s best friend. When Hino’s accompanist for the first round quits on her, Ryotaro plays for her, surprising everyone with the fact he can actually play! Which leads to him playing in the competition as well.

This anime is shoujo. Hino is outspoken and stubborn. She says her mind and isn’t afraid of any of the boys. Even the cold rich boys who like scaring/threatening her. Hino’s still a girly girl, and she is still very dramatic. The drama whipping up even more with the music. The music is beautiful and dynamic. They picked their songs well for this anime. Ava Maria plays an important part in this as we watch Hino grow and change. As well as watch her change the lives of her friends though the magic she plays.

Hino is a fantastic character and is one of my favourite shoujo girls. This anime is Platinum to me. I realise some will disagree but this anime was beautiful to me and made me wish I could play the violin.

Kuroshitsuji Book of Circus/Murder Review

The Book of Circus is the third season for Kuroshitsuji. But it is not a follow on from season 2. Season is a bullshit (noncanon) season which was no where near as good as the actual Kuroshitsuji story. The book of Circus is another Arc from the manga, as is the book of Murder. They are pretty early Arcs. It is truly a shame Kuroshitsuji couldn’t have been given an anime a year later but the producers made the correct decision in making these two arcs anyway. If you want to see my opinions on the first season, click here.

Lord Ceil is back. With Sebastian and everyone else in co. This time he is investigating the disappearance of children when a certain circus act come to town. Cutting just a little too late into that wound of his. Welcome to the Circus and let the show begin! With old characters who are still brilliant, we are introduced to a whole new cast as Sebastian and Ceil go undercover at the circus to uncover the truth. The latest edition is brilliant and as clever as the first. Better in my opinion, though there is quite a gap in between me watching the two seasons. So the new characters.

Oh! The new characters. Such a tragic story they hold. Performers who were saved from a workhouse who are under the control of their mysterious benefactor. From Joker, the ring leader to Hansel and Greta. These new characters are a close family with one desire. Or do they? They kidnap the children on orders of their benefactor who have their ‘brothers and sisters’ hostage at the workhouse. So they work hard to protect them all and let them have a bright future. Unlike the poor souls who they have kidnapped. The benefactor who saved them from dying on the streets and paid for a doctor who give them prosthetics limbs to replace the ones which were lost to them.

Nothing is as it seems in the circus as it becomes increasingly apparent. I enjoyed meeting all these characters and though the story which was told was inspired. The ending was very sad for me, and almost heart breaking as Ciel laughs in the ruins of it all. Declaring that’s what it means to be human. Sebastian looking slightly lost for words. The season isn’t all gloom and doom though and there are plenty of comedy moments. Including Grell getting jealous as he see a soul having sex with Sebastian as he is watching her life. Also Ciel gets restrained from leaving his house several times, thanks to the nature of his housekeepers.  Oh and this moment.kuroshitsuji-book-of-circus-episode-2-26

All in all a marvelous edition to the Kuroshitsuji family. Which leads on to the Book of Murder. A two episode Ova which takes place directly after the book of Circus. Where we have a cluedo like mystery of a killer in the house during a storm. With Arthur Wordsmith (who is based of Arthur Conan Doyle) as a character.

superthumbSebastian is an amazing character and these Ova’s only reiterate that. Ciel’s acting is tested many times as the Queen, unhappy with Ciel’s dealing of the circus case, has him set up for murder. Except they manage to prove him innocent. After all, he was not the killer. The book of murder was a wonderfully spun together mystery plot which had me on the edge of my seat trying to work out who the killer was. Sebastian and cats though! Too cute! Plus Ciel’s reaction is priceless. As is the servants when they realise Sebastian isn’t dead. (Spoilers? Not really. He’s a demon, he can’t die that easily). I loved these Ovas to pieces and hope they decide to make season 4, which should be the titanic arc.

Also at the end of the book of Murder, Ciel gets a new servant, who shall remain a mystery here. Go watch! Gold.Book_of_Murder

Jigoku Shoujo Review

Jigoku Shoujo was an original anime written by Hiroshi Watanabe

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness

silver, would you like to get revenge on someone? There is a website, a website that only exsits at midnight where you may make your request. Should your request be accepted, Hell girl will send your tormentor to hell. But should you decide to go though with the request, you to shall go to hell on the eve of your death.

Hell girl is a clever anime in my view. Much of the episodes take place in a ‘weekly’ mystery format. We meet the characters and are left to figure out who is the aggressor and who is the victim. Who will be driven to summonsing Hell Girl and for what reason. It is not as simple as it all first appears. Some people wish to use Hell Girl for their own gains.

So who is hell girl? She is an immortal who appears in a school uniform 71958land red eyes. At first she appears to have no emotion, and deals with her clients stoically which only adds to the atmosphere to the anime. But she always sides with who is on the side of  the victim, once she has figured out who that is. Ai Enma is her name. We learn little about hell girl until further into the series. She lives on the edge of hell, unable to enter, ferrying souls from one shore to the next in a kimono.

Ai is not the only character who appears on a regular basis. Ai has three assistants who help her in her work. All of which with their own personalties and equally as mysterious. But not as mysterious as Ai’s grandmother, who we never see, only hear. Normally telling Ai that she has a request and her kimono is ready. But the only person who does see her, runs away in terror.

This anime is very clever, the overall plot hidden within the episodes as we slowly uncover just who Ai Enma is and why she works as hell girl. Part of her job is to be emotionless, having been ordered to forget her own hatred, however after the events of season 1, some emotions do sneak though. Ai is a fascinating character and the plots for the episodes are breathtaking as well. The truth often as covered in darkness and mist as 25579lthe characters themselves.  Watching just how far people will go, and how much someone can take before they finally take vengeance on their tormentor. And just because you were the victim once does not give you the right to become the tormentor either as some poor humans discover.

Anyway, to be this is a silver. Thrilling but not one I would go out of my way to recommend. Please give it a watch if you have the time though.

Kuroshitsuji Season 1 Review

Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) 25353l

Watched 2010 roughly

This is only for season 1 because of the gap between be watching season 1 and the book of circus/murder. Season 2 does not exist to me.

Type: TV

Kuroshitsuji is an manga adaptation written by Yana Toboso.

Last week is seemed the generator was telling me to review all the reverse harem video game adaptations I have watched. This week, it appears to be giving me animes which were made before the manga was finished. Not to say the ending to this was not well done. Black Butler 1 was an excellently made anime. Though one known for being slightly dodgy due to the artwork and the fact the author is known for drawing Yaoi. But this is very unique anime.

Set in Victorian Britain, 12 year old Lord Ciel Phantomhive works as the Queen’s guard dog. Fixing the problems the underworld of the British empire causes without anyone knowing. How? With the help of his demon butler. Sebastian. As Ciel works, he seeks to understand and unravel the plot behind Ciel’s parents’ murder, and the horrendous tragedies which Ciel was focused to experience at the age of 10. He was a slave and sacrifice for a ritual. He was torture enough that he had enough hatred to summon Sebastian. The contact is simple, Sebastian can eat Ciel’s soul when Ciel has found the people responsible for the travesty.  Ciel has a crest in his eye which when revealed lets Sebastian see where he is. To stop him practically and also to save him when needed, and given Ciel’s job, that happens more than often your normal teenage boy.

Ciel is a young teenager noble. He’s stuck up, bratty and traumatised. His family is gone and the only family member he has left after all this, he ends up having to remove. All he can count on is a demon butler who while dutiful, likes to play games. Which Ciel is fine with because he plays games back. Ciel is one of those characters you can’t help but like, though you find yourself half to time wanting to slap him and the other half wanting to hug him.

56955Sebastian is suave and extremely skilled. He can fight, defy the laws of physics and is devoted to being the perfect butler. He also loves cats. Something which is very amusing when Ciel is allergic to them. He can charm anyone, and in true demon fashion can terrify anyone as well. His and Ciel’s relationship is one of Master and servant. Sebastian will go out of his way to ensure his Lord’s needs are met but Ciel is just food to him. He is just watching as Ciel’s soul falls deeper and deeper into sin. And Ciel’s mentality does seem to decrease as the anime progresses, however arguably that is due to the dark and gory events he endures every day. He is, after all, a child. Something which erks Ceil greatly as no one takes him seriously as result. Something which he does occasionally use to his own advantage.

On top of two very well developed characters we have some excellent side characters. All four Phantomhive servants are incompetent at their jobs but amazing at killing people. All having been hunted down by Sebastian to serve on the household. Apart from one who is the oldest servant and is completely unfazed by everything which occurs. We have  grim reapers, who hate demons. Grell is my favourite. Grell is your flamboyant gay character who is slightly obsessed with death and Sebastain. You can’t miss him, he’s the one all in red with a chainsaw as a unlicensed scythe. And many more. So watch it and fall into the deep dark depths of the Victorian underworld. Fall of politics magic and murder.

This anime is a little piece of gold in my eyes and I was very sad when I finished it. I looked forward to the 2 season and was greatly disappointed.

No. 6 is a light novel adaptation written by Atsuko Asano.

No.6 was interesting. It set out to be a potentially excellent anime. It was good but it missed a couple of its goals I think. To be honest this anime reminded of a mix between 1989 and Neon Flux. No. 6 is a city. There are other cities, but they don’t live by the same rules and laws as No. 6. This is a futurist dystopia. It opens up to events which take back a couple of years before. A boy, Shion, is about to be upgraded to the special course. He lives in the rich side of town and has lots of potential. However during a storm he allows a boy the same age as him to take shether in his bedroom. Nezumi. (Rat). Nezumi is an escaped criminal. However even after learning this, Shoin lets him stay and patches up his wounds. Nezumi leaves in the morning and the authority come to question Shion. Because of his actions he and his mother are banished to the lower caste and he is no longer allowed any privileged. For going against the law at 12 and sheltering another (admittedly criminal) child.

Anyway, cut to a few years later and Shion is working as a park janitor to earn money. He witnesses the death of a colleague by some strange parasitic wasp and gets framed by the government. Lucky for him Nezumi has not forgotten him and saves him.Twice. First time from the police, the second time from the parasitic which is in him. Causing his hair to go white and his eyes to go red. I have to say this is one of the rare animes where there is an explanation for why someone’s hair is not a normal colour. Anyway after this it is a race against time to save the people of No. 6. Except Nezumi doesn’t want to.

The world outside No 6 is rough. Shion is a naive, sheltered boy, even after being kicked out the rich area, who doesn’t really understand how things work in the dangerous west town. He stumps a lot of cold hearted people because he still actually has a heart. Nezumi is half exasperated by this, half angered. Nezumi protects him a lot, which amuses their allies greatly as the world is a kill or be kill type. You don’t protect people. And yet Nezumi does. Still Shion makes friends with the right people who keep him safe when Nezumi can’t. While they talk big, you can’t help but feel they would do a lot to help Shion. Which they do in the end. Shion then as the small task of trying to convince Nezumi, who wants to see No 6 burn, for fairly good reasons, to help him save the city.

Fairly heavy plot and the story suits. I can’t help but feel like something is missing but I’m just not sure what. Its well told, I think. But something is just not perfect. The ending leaves a lot of unanswered questions, like who was in charge and why they were doing this. Its not like No 6 wasn’t almost in complete control of its citizens anyway. Its very dark, the containment centre scene is something out of nightmares. But that makes the world they are living in. No 6 is rotten from the inside. And the show is about the characters trying to change that.

The characters are interesting, it is a good contrast between the hopeless optimistic Shoin and the negative Nezumi. Shoin’s mother and childhood friend are both excellent female characters. Well the mum is. I want to punch the friend occasionally. Dogloan is also an excellent character and I wish we could have learned a bit more about her past. (Dogloan is the girl in the bottom picture).

I give this anime a silver, partly because there is something very meh about it. It was enjoyable and interesting to watch. I looked forward to seeing the conclusion but I can’t help but feel there was something missing from the show.

Oh! Just a small warning, lots of Nezumi/Shoin hints throughout the show and the ending would just spoil it.

Ginban Kaleidoscope Review

Ginban Kaleidoscope (Skating Rink Kaleidoscope)19926l

Ginban Kaleidoscope is a manga adaptation drawn by Jun Hasegawa and written by Rei Kaibara.

I remember Ginban Kaleidoscope quite well. I watched it shortly after complete Kaleido Star in a search for more performance anime. This is far from the same level as Kaleido Star but was a novel concept none the less. We have Sakurano Tazusa. A upcoming star in the ice skating world. Cold and Aloof, no one has seen her smile on the ice. For her it is not about performing, but just about winning. Except without that smile she is just missing that special something which will sent her into true stardom. Then we have Pete Pumps, a Canadian pilot. These two are thrown together in a way either of them could have predicted.

Pete Pumps dies. In an airplane crash. Except when he gets up to heaven, there is a little problem/mistake and he gets sent back to earth for x amount of days. Into Tazusa’s body. He is eventually haunting her now and the two do not get along well. Though some embarrassments and other trails, Tazusa and Pete learn to get along and reside calmly. Pete helping Tazusa grow as a person and gain those final though things she needs to truly become famous. Not to mention translating English to her.

The ending is bitter-sweet. The final final performance scene is well done and a lovely thing to watch. But the parting scene when Pete goes up to heaven is sad. Personally it did not make me cry but it is a downer, due to the close nature though two have been though.

All in all, Ginban Kaleidoscope was an enjoyable watch with some good points and some bad points. I can’t say much about the rest of the cast as I only really remember Tazusa and Pete but as main characters they had good personal traits and grew along with the series.

So its a Silver to me.
