Munto TV Review

Munto Tv is the continuation of a two part original OVA which was released by Kyoto Animation in 2003 and 2005.

I was watching this feeling like something was missing and it many ways it was. Music. Its there occasionally, but I can not help but feel this anime would have been better with a better soundtrack and more actually used. Take ep 3, there is music during the magic scenes, but none during the dramatic river crossing. Making a what should have been a dramatic and heart warming scene, rather than dull and disinteresting. They should not have limited the music to just the magic scenes. munto 1

Munto was cool. Yumemi was sweet in her own way. She seemed like she was going to be pathetic but then stood up and proved me wrong. She fought. And I have admiration for that. Yumemi is still very much your shoujo girl. She’s pretty and falls in love easily. People also fall to her charm easily as well. But she’ll do what it takes to protect her friends.

I guess the main problem for this anime to me was that the ‘normal world’ was portrayed very dully, despite one of the main characters living there. The magical world got all the cool music and effects. Plus the bright colours. I get its to make a contrast, but it does make the magical world a lot more interesting than the normal world. It also makes the normal world slightly more boring to watch.

Snapshot89

The relationships are interesting in this anime. Yumemi and Ichiko’s relationship especially. Verging on Yuri, Ichiko is very protective of her friend. Wishing she could see what Yumemi can see, and doing her best to support her. Begging her not to go because she couldn’t protect her. There are lots of different relationships in this anime which are different to normal animes. Its a shame really we don’t get to learn more about some of the side characters. We learn a lot about Yumemi and her friends, also about Munto but not much about the characters in the magic kingdom.

All in all, a silver. The story is entertaining despite it’s weaker points and the side characters are amusing and interesting as the main characters.

Yuri Kuma Arashi was an original anime project written by  Kunihiko Ikuhara, though the manga written for it was published before the anime was released.

In the beginning we hated you so

In the beginning we must have loved you to

And so we wanted to become true friends with you. To cross the wall

I’m not really sure how I am meant to feel about this anime. I guess a silver? I’m not likely to forget the plot and I think I enjoyed it. It’s very surreal. Like a strange cross between xxxholic and utena. With added Yuri, cannibalism and less guys.  This is a story is about the love and bonds we share and how the world likes to destroy those bounds. I called it cannibalism however its bears eating humans, admittedly disguised as humans but still the same.kuma 3

We don’t really see any blood, but this anime is definitely NSFW. Containing a lot of suggestive scenes. Even in the opening there are a few moments of ummmm. Toe biting? Yuri in genre is not a genre I enjoy, and it was only because of my weekly challenge that I watched this. That and the artwork is not moe and has decent proportions. Unlike most things Silver link makes – thank god! I do have a limit with ecchi stuff and the appearance of the characters. Not to stay the artwork is pretty. Its very shoujo, almost CLAMP like. Big round eyes and long legs and bodies. kuma 2The story is one with twists and deep symbolic meanings. This story is laced with symbolism and if you think this anime is as simple of bears wanting to eat humans, you would be wrong. If anything the idea of an ‘invisible storm’ is proof of this. Those who don’t fit in and conform to society’s ideas are excluded from the herd and left to be eaten by the bears. Not literally from the school, but rather from the herd’s events etc. Sound familiar? Just think of your own friends who are LGBT or simply not the standard model, how much they have to face from people. Society is not forgiving to those who stick out.

kuma 4

Love is more times than not in anime over sexualised. It’s refreshing to see any anime about love being more true and honest. Kureha is in love with Sumika. Even after she dies, she is determined to not spoilt that love, or friendship. Declaring for a while afterwards that she doesn’t want to make any more friends. Sumika is her only friend. Not that it doesn’t stop the others from trying. The storm taking more than one form once someone has been removed.

kuma 5

The bears, for reason of their own, wish to protect Kureha. Because one loves her due to the kindness showed to her once she was young. Refusing to give up on love. Eating girls who become a threat to Kureha, Jealousy. Love. Determination. Also lost chances. This anime covers the complexness which is love while keeping it sweet and innocent. For the most. But not only love itself but the fight people have to face against society’s view of their love. How people choose to get in the way of love. Because they don’t agree with it, or because they want it themselves.

Basically, this anime is deep. Very deep. With hidden means and a fantastic story line. Don’t be put off my the fact it is yuri or the fact it is surreal. It is a gem in the dust which likely deserved more attention that it got.

‘Is your love true?”

“Will you eat humans, or will you become invisible?”

So many deep references I’m not going to even begin because you could write papers on this anime!

For people who enjoyed this, I would recommend Utena. I did some researching and it turns out they are both directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara which explains the similar feelings between the two.

Non Non Biyori is a manga adaptation written by Atto.

There is a growing problem in Japan, in that with more and more people living in the cities, the schools in rural areas are more and more stretched for resources due to the small number of students attending them. Non Non Biyori is set in one such area. Hotaru transfers to the countryside because of her father’s job. Hotaru who lived in Tokyo and now has to get used to living in the sticks. Her new school has 5 students ranging from 1st grade to 9th grade. Three of them are siblings. The boy rarely saying a word, if any. And the youngest child’s sister is the one teacher *cough cough* babysitter of the children. Which she fails at.

Non Non Biyori 2

Non Non Biyori doesn’t really have much going on other than daily life. The problems and joys of living in the middle of nowhere which little to do other than waste the day away. It is quite simply another anime, as charming as it is, which is about girls living. The comedy is light at best, nothing major. It’s fine. Non Non Biyori 1

That’s all I can really say. It’s fine. Which is why it gets a bronze. Chances are, in a year I won’t remember what happened in this anime. It was sweet and charming in its own way I guess.

If you liked this, I’d recommend Barakumon. It has more plot but the same issues of someone moving from a city to the countryside.

Ai Yori Aoshi is a manga adaptation originally written by Kou Fumizuki

This anime is not one I remember much to at all, which makes my rating low anyway. I remembered it was about a normal guy who suddenly gets a traditional Japanese wife/fiancée. I didn’t remember they were childhood friends. I also remembered this anime gave me a similar feeling to Chobits/dearS but pretty much nothing else. Oh! Also that he is estranged from his family and thinks this is a set up.

Don’t get me wrong, I properly should re-watch this before reviewing but considering how much I remember of other series I watched at the same time, it doesn’t really give me a good enough incentive to try again. It suggests to me that I didn’t really enjoy this anime, or well, I enjoyed it enough to complete it but not enough to retain much about the story. Give its age and its genre types, its not really the sort of program I would watch now. Maybe in summer I will give it another change but not for the moment.

Sorry any fans of this anime, and I do encourage people to watch it themselves due to my lack of memory but bronze.

B Gata H Kei Review

B Gata H Kei is a manga adaptation originally written by Yoko Sanri.

If I was to explain this anime in a sentence, its sounds pretty bad and like your standard ecchi anime. Yamada is a 15 year old girl who wants to have sex with 100 men, but is a virgin and has no idea at all what to do.

What does this boil down to? A surprisingly good coming of age comedy about a girl who despite having sex on her minds 24/7 is surprisingly innocent and naive when it boils down to these matters. This anime is pretty ballsy, and while it does have the odd fan service scene, there is less than in a lot of other animes. Its more comedy than anything else. Yamada really wants to have sex.B Gata H Kei 4 But she has no real ideas on how to seduce a boy into having sex with her. Leaving our male lead, Kosuda, confused often, especially in regards to their relationship. Yamada herself isn’t sure for most of the anime. On a day when my university lecturer commented they have too many herbivorous boys and not enough carnivorous boys but all girl are carnivorous in japan, this anime just rang true. Yamada takes some pretty bold risks while trying to seduce Kosuda. Plus her mind turns everything dirty. Everything is a chance for her to show off and to gain more followers/slaves.

B Gata H Kei 7

Kosuda is a normal looking guy who doesn’t really have any outstanding features. Which is why Yamada has picked him to be her first time. After all, as inexperienced as she is, she doesn’t want people making fun of her for it. So she picks another virgin who should be happy to have the goddess which is Yamada doting on him. Kosuda is a nice guy, and gets very fluttered by some of the attention he gets from Yamada. He in the photography club and has an older sister who is a massive tomboy and as dense as he is when it comes to romantic matters. Kind of.B Gata H Kei 5

So why do I love this anime? I knew more than a few girls like this when I was her age. Which is why I feel very sorry for her best friend who has to deal with her crazy antics. After all, there is nothing like being the mature one while your friend is immature and running around yelling about sex. Another reason I think this a very good anime because for once it shows what some girls are actually like. Not all are frail delicate flowers who only have pure hearted intentions. Some are hormonal wreaks who are obsessed with getting the D. Seriously I can remember one classmate asking around if anyone knew anyone who would be willing to take their virginity before they turned 16. Girls can be just as obsessed with sex as boys and it is refreshing to see an anime which shows a girl in this manner, admittedly a more extreme example but still very true to how some girls can be. Part of me can’t help but wonder if the author wrote this about their own experiences or about a friends and inserted some of the gags because despite the over-the-topness it does run true.
B Gata H Kei 6At that age, a lot of girls want to have sex but aren’t actually ready too. Yamado is definitely not ready, despite her complains otherwise. The first time they kiss properly, she runs away and blushes. Flashing Kosuda leaves both of them embarrassed and red faces. Also this anime doesn’t really do the whole ‘nose bleed means boner/turned on’ thing, which makes a change. Instead we get hilarious moments when Kosuda realises he turned on and prompts does sits up etc. Its fantastic and far more funny than the standard tropes. Not that his anime doesn’t have the tropes in, it has plenty. Including the one I like the least, aka the big brother complex. But luckily its one of the minor characters and at tolerable levels. Sort of.

Either was  as this anime goes on, we watch as Yamado learns that sex and emotion aren’t as easily separated as she first though, either is seduction. So I give this anime a silver. For the gags and the fact they manage to portray a girl in the middle of puberty surprising well. Not to mention a whole cast of other characters who end up swept up in the midst of it all.

Tokyo Ghoul Review

Tokyo Ghoul is a manga adaptation originally written by Sui Ishida.

Let me start by stating I don’t really like gore as a whole. I don’t like films like saw etc. I watched this mostly because my roommate loved it and cosplayed someone from it. That being said, Tokyo Ghoul is a anime which falls under amazing first reason and crap second. The first season is amazing. Its blood and to the point. It follows the manga as well and isn’t afraid to be disturbing and scary. This anime is not for the light hearted, nor for children. There is torture, blood and cannibals. Literally. In this world there are monsters who look like humans but can only survive by eating human flesh. They look human and most blend into human society, however on top of eating humans, they are also super strong and have powers which they fight with. There is an organisation which has been set up to destroy all the ghouls as well.

Our leading man is a high school stuTokyoGhouldent about to turn university called Ken Kaneki. Kaneki is a normal human who loves literature and is in love with someone he see in a local coffee shop. Rise. Kaneki is an thoughtful and kind soul who lost his parents early on and is close to his best friend. Rise agrees to go on a date with him. The two of them having a nice time, except it turns out Rise is a Ghoul and tries to kill Kaneki. She fails because in a weird stroke of ‘luck/fate’ some construction beams fall on them. In the operating room, they decide they can’t save Rise but they can save Kaneki and put Rise’s organs in him. Inadvertently turning into a half ghoul, half human hybird. We watch as Kaneki learns how to deal with his new nature and the ew world he has been thrown into. Including making allies as he goes, and of course enemies.

There is not anything I can think of for this anime which I can say is bad. The amount of gore can be a little off putting but it suits the darkness of the story. The plot is interesting with enough light bits to remind you that surviving in this world is worth it. That being said, for every bit of happiness there is a lot of sadness. The ghoul who are sane go though a lot to stay hidden. Facing being hunted down by the police and also from other ghouls who are trying to overtake the weak humans. Not to mention Kaneki’s sanity slowly fade. The last episode of the season is just like ‘oh no’ as things finally snap.

Season 1 was amazing. Full of plot twists and characters you could feeling fall in love with. And then, they got over confidant. I will accepted the manga hadn’t finished but considering it is now, I feel like season 2 would have been much better received/enjoyed if they had pushed season 2 back a season and actually followed the manga instead of changing the story in such small ways that it left people unsatisfied. The first mistake was Kaneki not half killing Ayato. Everyone was waiting for that scene to happen. And it didn’t. Everything after that was just layer after layer of the same plot but minor details changed. Minor details which were important and took a lot away from the enjoyment factor. Especially when you have to listen someone who is a manga fan rant about the inconsistency.

So I guess I give Tokyo Ghoul silver. I would like to give it gold but season 1 isn’t long enough to leave you feeling satisfied and season 2 is no where near the quality of season 1. Such a shame for an anime which had real potential to be amazing but was rushed and ruined.

Afro Samurai is a manga adaptation written by Takashi Okazaki.

A dark and dull coloured anime to suit a dark and cruel story. Afro Samurai is certainly one of the most unique stories I have seen in a long time. Sure the idea of someone avenging their murder father is hardly a new concept. However this anime as whole new levels. The artwork is truly stunning as it the battle scenes. They are full of action and movement. Fluid not stagnant. And lots of blood. Oh this anime has lots of blood, made more prevail due to its dark screen tones.

The Afro Samurai wears the no 2 headband. The no 2 headband is fated to be alone. The only one allowed to challenge the no 1 warrior in the land. And many men will fight hard in order to gain that honour. After all the no 2 is beatable. He is a man. While no 1 is considered a god. The no 1 headband once belonged to Afro’s father and he was forced to watch as a child as his father was defeated. Justice cutting off his fathers head before challenging him to return one day to defeat him too. Afro then dedicates his live to gaining revenge. Even at the cost of those who take him in. Though that story alone is a tragedy.

afroagainstkuma(2)-868536

The fight scene between Afro and Gino really got my heart strings. Once brothers fighting against each other in a blooded rage. Never to be reconciled due to the losses they have faced and the trails they have been though in this cruel world. There are few moments of happiness in this anime, if any. And often quickly soured. There is just blood and harsh realism of the land they live for much of this anime. Where every warrior is aiming for that no 2 headband.

Its dark and gritty. The fight scenes only really broken up by the endless chatter of Afro’s companion Ninja. Ninja who is always making quirks and its never really clear whose side Ninja is on. But he follows Afro to the end of the world regardless. The moment he dies is tragic, especially when you realise who or rather what he is.

And that ending…

To say I enjoyed this anime would be lie. It was hard going but it had me hooked. I could not tear my eyes from the screen. A scene of terror and dread as the story unfolded and we learned more and more about Afro and his past. And his future. I give Afro Samurai platinum because I honestly can’t compare it to any other animes. It is truly a unique anime to me.afro-samurai

Saki is a manga adaptation originally written Ritz Kobayashi.

I read the manga and really enjoyed it. I was looking forward to the anime. However I really struggled with it. The story is good. Saki Miyanaga is a inverted girl who is very good at Mahjong due to having to play it with her family every year. Her gift is that she can always get 0 on a game. One people learn this, she is dragged into the school club to learn how to use her skill to actually beat other players and win the tournament. Not to mention fulfil her dream of being able to defeat her sister in a game of Mahjong without being punished for it. Along with a cast of mostly girls and a lot of implied Yuri.

Here is the problem for me. I’m fine with Yuri. I’m fine with Yaoi. However these girls look like they are still in junior school to me. The whole thing just sets of paedophilia bells in my mind almost as bad as Kuroshitsuji 2. My main issue is with the pink haired girl Nodoka Haramura. Her boobs are giant. She’s 15/16 but to me the style of the comic makes her look more like 12/13. Now in a manga big boobs are fine, just part of the scenery. In the animation because of how they animate them, its genuinely a little disturbing for me and I just could not watch it any longer. Especially when during a rain scene her top goes see though and well. No.

Saki is a really good story about a group of girls who want to win a mah-jong tournament but to me is ruined by someone’s insane idea to give a 15 year old K cup size boobs and make the other girls grope them. Its basically soft porn at times and its not appreciated by me. Not at all. Stone
