Ai Yori Aoshi is a manga adaptation originally written by Kou Fumizuki

This anime is not one I remember much to at all, which makes my rating low anyway. I remembered it was about a normal guy who suddenly gets a traditional Japanese wife/fiancée. I didn’t remember they were childhood friends. I also remembered this anime gave me a similar feeling to Chobits/dearS but pretty much nothing else. Oh! Also that he is estranged from his family and thinks this is a set up.

Don’t get me wrong, I properly should re-watch this before reviewing but considering how much I remember of other series I watched at the same time, it doesn’t really give me a good enough incentive to try again. It suggests to me that I didn’t really enjoy this anime, or well, I enjoyed it enough to complete it but not enough to retain much about the story. Give its age and its genre types, its not really the sort of program I would watch now. Maybe in summer I will give it another change but not for the moment.

Sorry any fans of this anime, and I do encourage people to watch it themselves due to my lack of memory but bronze.

Ano Natsu de Matteru is an original anime series written by Yosuke Kuroda, with original character design by Taraku Uon.

In summary, a typical anime about the summer in high school, complete with trip to Okinawa and four triangles. With the twist of one of them is an alien and the fact they are decide to make a film over the summer.

Ano Natsu 1

This anime has a similar feeling to it as Anohana. Except not as good. admittedly though, Anohana is a tough one to beat though in this genre. Ano Natsu de Matteru is a enjoyable if typical drama. The male lead, Kaito is a typical lead with very little personality and his main trait being that he loves of filmmaking. He falls in love with a new student at his school. Ichika, an alien who is searching for a place in her memories and ends up living at his house. As you know, so many animes work. Kaito doesn’t quite live alone but to clear that end up his sister goes on a work trip for the summer to Boliva of all places so its just the two of them. And his friends when they come barging round.

Ano Natsu 3

I’m not going to lie, I spent most of this anime not really liking Ichika. She’s very bland. With even less to say about her than the male lead. Apart from the fact she goes beyond in love with him and almost to obsessive early one. Following him whenever she sees him with other people. Though she doesn’t seem to quite realise it at first. I find her tiresome and I’m not sure how much she actually adds to the story ignoring being an alien. Also I found my self taking Kanna’s side in the fight for Kaito’s heart. Ichiro just appears out of nowhere and steals it without giving Kanna a chance. But I guess that life. If it hadn’t been a alien, it would have been something else I think sadly.

Honestly the amount of time spend on the characters is enough. They are a pretty pathetic lot really. Massive love rectangle between the lot of them, with an added two girls for the okinawa episodes. I quite like the fact none of them end up with who they want though. More realistic that way. The character I wished we had learned more about was Remon/Lemon, though I realise this anime was the wrong genre for that.

Ano Natsu 2

Lemon is a young looking girl who is actually much older than she appears, though her actual age is never specified. She is introduced as Ichika’s classmate who for unknown reasons wears a different uniform to the rest of the school. It quickly becomes apparent she knows far more than she lets on. It is discovered eventually she works for the men in black but its an sideline. She is mostly in charge of filming the events which are going on. She is the most interesting one to me and I wish we had learnt more about her. Like why she was there in the first place? Does she spend every summer at that school or what?

As far as the other aspects of this anime goes, the action is so random and very clique in its reasoning. It does spice up the anime though. Otherwise its just a lot of tears as everyone is in love with someone who is in love with someone else. Part from the main pair. With some summer cheer as they have fun occasionally.

I give this anime a bronze. It was enjoyable but nothing special nor unique and I spent much of it disliking the main characters which always knocks a show down a few pegs.

I watched this anime while I was still pretty green to the whole ecchi/harem genre layout. So we have a ‘beautiful’ noble, Lady Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière, who can’t use her magic properly and summons a human from another world to world as a familiar. Aka something to channel her power though. As a side note, she is well known for not being able to use her magic well and was nicknamed “Louise the Zero” by his classmates because of this. Lousie is a spoilt girl who honestly is still high up on my ‘Anime girls I would love to slap’ list. This lady is queen of being a tsudere. I don’t care that her type is tsudere, she’s a bitch who needs taking down a few notches.
As for the poor guy who gets summoned, Saito Hiraga he ends up with an abusive woman for a ‘master’. Because he is a familiar, the proof being the runes on his hand, he is basically treated like an animal by Louise. And like a pervert because he occasionally looks at women’s boobs. You know that thing all young single men do when its practically shoved in front of them. Lousie beats him often and its not always funny. Heck, the only reason he can talk and understand them all is because Lousie miscast a silencing spell, giving him the ability to understand them.
Whats more, turns out it actually a pretty good familiar. The runes on his hand means he some kind of super solider able to use any weapon given to him with a high level of skill.  Including a Jet fighter plane which fell though to that world once. But does he try to stop Lousie beating him? No! Does he fall in love with her? Yes!
Wait what? I have some serious issues with this. When did they fall in love? Saito has opinions over that Louise. I swear its some like of Stockholm syndrome and if it was the other way round this anime would be getting a lot more hate. Why is it suddenly sexy/funny for a flat chest little girl to beat the hell out of some poor bloke who has no chance of getting away? At least most tsudere character’s signant other wasn’t forced into a relationship. (Yes he fell in love, but he had to live with her and such for the series). At the end of season 2, they get married. I didn’t bother going back for season 3.
Now, all being said, I do remember sort of enjoying the anime. Its very beautiful and the characters were cool. I just hate the main girl is all. So Bronze.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena Review

Shoujo Kakumei Utena is a manga adaptation originally by a Chiho Saito.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena is a likely one of the earliest examples of a fandom Yuri pairing which was almost canon because of how often it was hinted at.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena was an very unique anime. Even now with its dated animation techniques, Utena is a beautiful work of art. Everything about it unique and different. The colours are bright and the backgrounds well designed. Plus this anime is not all about looks either. It contained some pretty deep theme. Including many topics which are seeming now taboo in anime outside of their genres.

Utena-1-_(2)

Notably gender. While never specially said, it could be argued that our leading lady is gender-fluid. Taking the ‘male role’ of the series and having a relationship with the ‘female’ lead. Unlike say Akuma no Riddle where the ‘male’ lead as short hair and very tomboyish vibe, Utena still retains her long pink hair and their are times where she is undeniably female.

So what has lead Utena to play the male role? Utena was once a young girl (princess) who was saved by a handsome prince. The prince that save her, gave her a ring in promises that he may one day return. An engagement ring perhaps? Most girls would eagerly await the return of their prince. Utena on the other hand was so taken by the prince, she wished to become a prince herself.

We met the adult Utena as she is arguing with his second about the school rules towards uniform. To be exact, there is no rule saying a girl can not wear the boys uniform. And so she wears it proudly. Excellent at sports too, all the girls love her and call her the prince of the school.

[large][AnimePaper]scans_Shoujo-Kakumei-Utena_nat(0_78)__THISRES__251775One day Utena protects girl from being bullied and somehow ends up in a duel over the right to control the girl. She has stumbled into a game where the player, all with some very serious issues and problems, duel over the hand of the Rose Bride. The duelest fight with swords drawn from their own hearts, or in the case of the current owner, the Rose Bride’s heart. To do this, and to show you are participating in the game, the player wear rose rings. Remember that ring the Prince gave Utena? That is one of the rings. The winner of the game will have the power to revolutionize the world. A phrase repeated often in the anime but even by the end the full understanding of the term is vague at best. Certainly the Rose Bride’s power can cause a drastic change.

The Rose bride herself is Anthy Himemiya. A girl who has very much a ‘doormat’ nature. She almost never stand up for herself. Her entire purpose in life and this anime is to be a pawn. Once Utena wins the rights to her, Utena protects her from people who would otherwise abuse or insult her. Those people use abuse her partly because they don’t think she as the ability to care about how people are treating her? Messed up but considering how obedient she is to other people and how she lets people treat her as a servant, especially her current Victor, whose every wishes she must cater to according to herself, its not surprising people have given up on treating her like human. A problem Utena tries to fix, and indeed Anthy is considerably warmer to Utena than other people due to this.

As previously stated there are some pretty dark and deep themes in this anime. Utena fights against a lot of prejudice and just plain wrong ideology in order to free Anthy from her curse.  His animes unusual because it takes a typical shoujo trait and encourages girls to think for themselves and become who they want to be, not what is expected of them.

So this platinum for me as I’ve never watched another anime just quite like it.

Shakugan no Shana Review

Shakugan no Shana is a light novel adaptation written by Yashichiro Takahashi.
An example of the fact that even if an anime manages to get three seasons and a movie, that doesn’t necessarily mean its any good.

Its not that this was a bad anime. But Shakugan no Shana failed to leave much of a lasting impression on me. Its just your standard action story. Normal boy turns out of have potential and girl comes along to use that potential. Girl who is powerful and oh, falls in love with boy. Visually Shakugan no Shana is impressive. The colours are wonderful and the magic is done excellently. Lots of really cool effects and unique designs. Not just character designs but world designs as well.

So what was the problem? This anime had some fairly cool plot ideas that had a lot of potential. Shana is a demon hunter whose job is to fight demon-like beings that consume human lives. Shana is a fiery girl who seems cold on the outside but as the series progress Yuji’s influence on her lets her makes friends and grow as a person.  In order to reduce the damage done by demons, those who die are turned into shadows of their former selves. Once the flame within them that represents their remaining life goes out, they fade from existence. This should have been Yuji’s fate too, but when he discovers he holds a special power that reignites his flame. Together they join forces in her ongoing mission to maintain the balance between the ordinary world and the supernatural. Making friends and enemies along the way.

I just remember liking the series but it didn’t have as effect on me as others have. Shana having the potential to use her powers to the fullest without dying and learning out to live in the ordinary world are all key points of this anime. Shana lived separate from them for so long, she struggles to understand how things work in his world. Plus she’s a tsundere. Which may be a factor against this anime, I’m not really a tsundere fan. Shana is contracted to a being known as Alastor, whos power fuels her blade. Alastor serves as her father figure and is an interesting character in his own right.

Basically. Bronze. Give it a go if you want, but its not something I plan on re-watching or even recommending to people. I guess the best way to describe Shakugan no Shana is dull. An anime which replied too much on special effects and didn’t spent enough time making a decent plot. shakugannoshana

Karin is a manga adaptation originally written by Yuna Kagesaki.

Karin was possibly my first anime. It was either this Elemental Gelade or Angelic Layer. I loved Karin. Karin was a much better love story than twilight any day. Bare in mind, I watched this in the same year Twilight came out and the hype around it. This manga’s twist on vampires? Well one, they have a preference for emotions. So Karin’s older brother prefers the blood of lust filled women etc. And number two, there is a rare type of vampire who instead of drinking blood, produces blood, injecting it into her victims. Karin is one of these vampire and this fact is incredibly embarrassing for her.

At high school, Karin lives as a normal teenage girl, still able to walk in daylight and eat human foods. Then she meets one Usui Kenta. Kenta has a tough life. He and his mother have very bad luck and they are poor as a result. Kenta’s mother seemingly a magnet for perverts and worse. Kenta discovers Karin’s secret when she has a major nosebleed at school and cleans it up for her.

Que a romantic comedy with an hilarious twist. Kenta spends his time helping Karin keep her secret and slowly they fall madly in love. And discover Karin’s preference as well. Something which comes in handy when the side effects hit. The love rival is a vampire hunter as well to add more spice to this comedy. You also get to watch as Karin’s sister Anju develop from being a child to an adult vampire. Anju who is very protective of her sister.

The anime ending is sweet, though not the same as the manga. I have not read the manga, but I have heard a lot of people complain about it. But as someone who has only watched the anime only, it is a very cute if not slightly clique ending.  Its an enjoyable anime and I give it a gold.

Love Stage is a manga adaptation written by Eiki Eiki.

I enjoyed this anime. As yaoi’s go, the quality is not brilliant due to the few which are actually made into programs. Love Stage was an enjoyable anime to me. And a fairly faithful adaptation of the manga. Though the story does have some weak flaws.

So plot.  When the handsome and famous Ryoma Ichijo was a child, he did an advertisement with another girl set at a weeking. Ten years later the company make a new advert with the same girl and Ryoma falls head over heels for this beautiful woman. The catch? The girl is not a girl. But a boy, who was forced in as a stand in when the original girl couldn’t make it. Izumi Sena is special in his family because he is not famous and doing everything in his power to remain unknown. Though his family and their agent are doing their best to get him though the door. Izumi is a daydreamer and massive otaku. What does this equal? A fantastic romantic comedy that has the ability to rival any shoujo or shounen any day.

Yaoi is strange in that often I find the stories are funnier because the main characters are better fleshed out. No Japanese women stereotypes. And trust me, there are stereotypes in this anime. Not all the extra characters are brilliantly well fleshed out however the anime makes it work and they give comedy when it is needed. Izumi is adorable, stubborn and embarrassed as hell about the fact he was made to dress up as a girl and then blackmailed into doing it a second time. Izumi just wants to be a manga artist, but his drawing are bad. Ryoma is you typical guy in that, he flips when he discovers Izumi is not a girl. Much to Izumi’s further shame. But Ryoma gets over his male pride and accepts the person he had fallen for has a dick. Though we do have to go though the whole ‘I’m not gay! am I gay?’ thing first.

Warning though for any non Yaoi fans who feel brave enough to watch this, there are a few scenes which are awkward and uncomfortable for people not comfortable with there sexuality. No worse than any eechi I have scene but some people struggle with them, but even if you choose to skip over those parts, this anime is very entertaining to watch.

So Gold. And I hope to see more of this genre to dilute it a bit.

Alien 9 is one a show not many people would have heard off which is a same because it is a good concept and one which would be interesting as a longer programme.
It is set in a world where alien invasion is a daily occurrence and every school assigns three students to fight off the extra-terrestrial threat within the school. This duty is chosen like all the others, by volunteer or nomination.6222lUnluckily for Yuri, she get chosen by her class to fight the alien invaders and she is terrified of them. Along with serious Kumi and perfectionist Kasumi they fight of the aliens using parasitic aliens which stay on their heads. However that the parasitics really that safe? And what happens when a giant alien abducts Kasumi.

This show is a strange but thrilling experience. Where you literally watch Yuri grow and learn how to cope in the situation she has been unwilling put it. To me its silver, and a urge anyone with some spare time to give it a go.
