Patalliro Saiyuki is a spin-off of a manga by Mineo Maya.

This is basically one of the many manga retellings of the traditional Chinese story Journey to the West. With more comedy and a dose of shounen ai for good measure. Not that I mind that at all. The story is basically about a monk travelling to obtain Buddhist sacred texts in order to learn more of Buddha’s teaching. Along the way, he faces man trails and demons and ends up with a demon bodyguard who is a monkey. The monk is too divine and the bodyguard is too demon and during this journey they learn to respect each other.

In this version as well as a monkey demon we have a cat demon who seduces the monk and normal crowd which appears in this tale. The episodes are only 10 mins long as well.

This anime was actually really fun. It wasn’t brilliant but it was certainly fun to watch and a lot easier to watch than some anime’s I’ve been watching recently. The plot was well done and very funny while mostly keeping to the originals plot ideas.

The animation could be better. It not actually bad but the manga was started in 1978 and so the character designs are extremely old. This gives the show a dated look which makes it worse than it actually is. The music is pretty good but there are little to no effects. It’s clearly animated in a traditional style too. Not an anime to watch for art style for sure.

One thing I quite enjoyed about the story was the narrator. He was an amusing addition to the story to explain the things that weren’t necessarily obvious or known in the story.

Beautiful or not I do think this anime is worth a look at and for that I give it a silver.

This was a little dash of gold. Admittedly it’s only one episode so it would have been hard to mess up (but completely possible) but it was very entertaining. It’s a shame that it was only a special but there is a 3 OVA also out also which i will hunt down at some point. I only watch this because it came on after finishing  Bonjour♪Koiaji Pâtisserie.

Simply its about a very small girl starting school again after being in an accident and becoming ‘friends’ with a very tall boy. She’s a very timid character but even in this one episode there were signs she was going to develop into more. It typical shoujo but the lass, timid as she is, isn’t a complete wuss which is nice. The guy also isn’t completely 2D too.

I hope at some point it gets picked up again.

Bonjour♪Koiaji Pâtisserie is a video game adaption. A mobile game for girls that (according to wiki) is still in development. Which is strange, because it normally is the opposite way round.

Bronze
This anime was easy to watch and in many ways in very good for a reverse harem programme. It has beautiful shoujo characters, all of which are bases we have seen a billion times before. This anime does not get any points for originality with the art design but it is animated well.

bonjour-2The characters personalities are a touch bland but they aren’t unrealistic like some are. Their back stories are a little more outlandish but given what it’s an adaptation of it’s no surprise. The lead girl is amusing and while she is clearly falling for all the boys she does have a personality which is nice. When studios make otome game adaptations (or any adaptation where the MC is someone that would have been the playable character) there is a danger that the character ends up either too unbelievable or without any personality at all.

The plot line itself is pretty standard. Some people commented it was a rip off of ‘Yumeiro Patissiere’ but I can’t judge as I have not watched that anime. I can say it was similar to Uta no Prince-sama. The MCs even look similar to me and both are in a situation where love is forbidden. In this case, because 3/4 of the male love interests are teachers. Oh, and the ending were basically sparkles galore and considerably deeper than it should have been.

I give this anime a bronze. It would have been higher if only they had put some more care into it. Each of the 24 episodes were 5 mins long and it were the skits were entertaining, there were few clues about the timeframe everything was going on it. I think they could have made this a decent 13 full-length episodes with the right people behind it, but oh well. A chance lost, unfortunately.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena Review

Shoujo Kakumei Utena is a manga adaptation originally by a Chiho Saito.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena is a likely one of the earliest examples of a fandom Yuri pairing which was almost canon because of how often it was hinted at.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena was an very unique anime. Even now with its dated animation techniques, Utena is a beautiful work of art. Everything about it unique and different. The colours are bright and the backgrounds well designed. Plus this anime is not all about looks either. It contained some pretty deep theme. Including many topics which are seeming now taboo in anime outside of their genres.

Utena-1-_(2)

Notably gender. While never specially said, it could be argued that our leading lady is gender-fluid. Taking the ‘male role’ of the series and having a relationship with the ‘female’ lead. Unlike say Akuma no Riddle where the ‘male’ lead as short hair and very tomboyish vibe, Utena still retains her long pink hair and their are times where she is undeniably female.

So what has lead Utena to play the male role? Utena was once a young girl (princess) who was saved by a handsome prince. The prince that save her, gave her a ring in promises that he may one day return. An engagement ring perhaps? Most girls would eagerly await the return of their prince. Utena on the other hand was so taken by the prince, she wished to become a prince herself.

We met the adult Utena as she is arguing with his second about the school rules towards uniform. To be exact, there is no rule saying a girl can not wear the boys uniform. And so she wears it proudly. Excellent at sports too, all the girls love her and call her the prince of the school.

[large][AnimePaper]scans_Shoujo-Kakumei-Utena_nat(0_78)__THISRES__251775One day Utena protects girl from being bullied and somehow ends up in a duel over the right to control the girl. She has stumbled into a game where the player, all with some very serious issues and problems, duel over the hand of the Rose Bride. The duelest fight with swords drawn from their own hearts, or in the case of the current owner, the Rose Bride’s heart. To do this, and to show you are participating in the game, the player wear rose rings. Remember that ring the Prince gave Utena? That is one of the rings. The winner of the game will have the power to revolutionize the world. A phrase repeated often in the anime but even by the end the full understanding of the term is vague at best. Certainly the Rose Bride’s power can cause a drastic change.

The Rose bride herself is Anthy Himemiya. A girl who has very much a ‘doormat’ nature. She almost never stand up for herself. Her entire purpose in life and this anime is to be a pawn. Once Utena wins the rights to her, Utena protects her from people who would otherwise abuse or insult her. Those people use abuse her partly because they don’t think she as the ability to care about how people are treating her? Messed up but considering how obedient she is to other people and how she lets people treat her as a servant, especially her current Victor, whose every wishes she must cater to according to herself, its not surprising people have given up on treating her like human. A problem Utena tries to fix, and indeed Anthy is considerably warmer to Utena than other people due to this.

As previously stated there are some pretty dark and deep themes in this anime. Utena fights against a lot of prejudice and just plain wrong ideology in order to free Anthy from her curse.  His animes unusual because it takes a typical shoujo trait and encourages girls to think for themselves and become who they want to be, not what is expected of them.

So this platinum for me as I’ve never watched another anime just quite like it.

Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love is a video novel game adaptation by Broccoli.

Yes I am aware this is the second season. I may have watched it without watching the first, having gotten it a bit mixed up. But I didn’t really notice, which I think has a lot for how little development happens in this series. To be fair, its an idol/music show so plot and characters aren’t really big on the agenda. Beautiful as the designs are, the characters are very 2D and there is little emotional development. More fantastic songs and sparks.

So many sparkles. The ending is just an explosion of sparkles and happy feels.

The basis story is Nanami Haruka, our lady for this, has dreams of being a famous composer and song writer. Something she is very talented is. Now she and the team have had their first big success, things are going going to get harder. Not only for her, but for the idols she is assigned to as well. The main six members of Starish are assigned new seniors to watch over them. But the seniors aren’t having the best attitudes about it, having their own issues about why they are no longer Idols. Plus a new member joins the group.

So to summarize, a few too many characters for any kind of decent development. Plus the contracts they sign mean they aren’t allowed to fall in love with anyone. Not to say they don’t get protective over their composer. When the new guy, Cecil Aijima shows up declaring his love for Nanami, they all get very pouty.

I have to say, I don’t like Japanese idea that being in a pop idol group means you can’t fall in love. You’re not allowed to have a boyfriend or girlfriend etc. Its wrong in my opinion. So the fact Cecil gives up on the idea of being with Nanami to become an idol is not one which rubbed well with me. Even if it was to inspire love and happiness to millions. To be its more like a slap in the face, regardless of how she takes it. Having some declare his love for you at every opportunity and then drop you is beyond a dick move. They can wrap it ribbons and make it pure hearted all they want.

I give this a silver because gripes aside this was an amusing anime. The ending was a bit much for me, but I don’t think its worth giving it a bronze.

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge is a manga adaptation originally written by Tomoko Hayakawa.

tried to watch Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge twice. The second time I succeeded. The different between the two times? Well the first time was after watching Ouran Host Club and these two animes are often recommended together despite the female leads being exceptionally different to each other. Why? Well the story revolves around beautiful boys and a unladylike girl. Other than that, I’m not personally sure why. Though both are excellent anime. I do like this anime, despite the fact I didn’t finish it the first time around. I think exams got in the way the first time.

yamato_nadeshiko_shichi_henge_43As previously mentioned, the story is about beautiful boys and an unladylike girl. In Ouran, Haruhi is a cross dresser. In Yamato Nadeshiko, our leading lady is a recluse. Having been told by her middle school crush that she was ugly, Nakahara Sunako gave up being a lady. Instead becoming obsessed with the occult and horror films. Not to mention looking like the girl from the ring, Sunako is infamous for scaring everyone. Her room is full of scary items, including a skeleton and an anatomical model who serves as Sunako’s best ‘friend’

For various reasons Sunako moves into her aunts mansion. Currently living in the mansion are four beautiful boys for for various reasons can’t live at home so Sunako’s aunt as collected them effiectly. With their own quirks, Sunako’s aunt makes a deal with them. If they can master the task of turning Sunako into a lady in one month, they don’t have to pay rent. But if they fail, they have to pay threetimes as much. They agree, not having met Sunako. From the moment they met her, it soon becomes pretty clear, this is an impossible task.yamato 1

Sunako is reluctant to enter the world of light. In face because she has locked herself away for so many years, she lets nosebleeds whether she is confronted by the boys. Sunako’s character is an interesting one because she is pretty much the anti shoujo girl in many ways and yet still one. She has been hurt by boys and wants nothing to do with him. She is stubborn and fights viciously to not go along with the schemes that the boys come up with to make money. Sunako is also surprising sensible. She is smart and can cook. She also is very self aware. She knows she scares people, she even won’t her father in her room because he’s scared of the occult.

This anime is enjoyable, watching as the boys try to make Sunako become a lady though blackmail and bribes. Not to mention all the stuff that occurs when a not so pretty girl lives which 4 stunning boys who have their own fanclubs. Honestly my biggest problem with this anime is the style. Sunako’s fine, there is visible differences between when she is not trying and when she is in beauty mode. But the boys. The boys are drawn weirdly to me. They are stylize and I understand that it is anime but the boys look more like girls than most of the girls do. Plus they aren’t that attractive to me. They are sweet though and have there own problems to add to the story.

So Silver. Its a good story if you can over look the art style.

La Corda D’Oro is a video game adaptation developed by Koei.

I had almost forgotten this anime classes as the genre as the likes of Kamagami no Asobi and Amnesia. A collection of boys all trying the gain the heart of one girl, Hino. Why? Because I watched this early on before I was aware of this genre being a thing. La Corda D’Oro is a fantastic anime and one which I personally was very touched by.

Hino is a normal student at a elite school where the school body is spilt into the two sections. The normal students and the music students. A collection of gifted students who focus their attention on perfecting their music.   Every year, the school has a music competition. On day Hino bumps into the school fairy Lili. Lili decides that Hino has talent and want her to take part in the competition. Because she can’t actually play any instruments, he grants her a music violin which allows her to play any tune from her heart.

corda-d-oro.jpgShe doesn’t actually want to play at first. But Lili is determined and after listening to everyone else play she decides to take part. As the series  goes on, Hino is amazed by the magic of the violin and as the competition goes on, she becomes more and more attached to the people she is playing with. While all the boys are love interests, there are more who have more of a role than others. Personally my favourite boy is Ryotaro. Ryotaro is in the normal section, head of the soccer team and also Hino’s best friend. When Hino’s accompanist for the first round quits on her, Ryotaro plays for her, surprising everyone with the fact he can actually play! Which leads to him playing in the competition as well.

This anime is shoujo. Hino is outspoken and stubborn. She says her mind and isn’t afraid of any of the boys. Even the cold rich boys who like scaring/threatening her. Hino’s still a girly girl, and she is still very dramatic. The drama whipping up even more with the music. The music is beautiful and dynamic. They picked their songs well for this anime. Ava Maria plays an important part in this as we watch Hino grow and change. As well as watch her change the lives of her friends though the magic she plays.

Hino is a fantastic character and is one of my favourite shoujo girls. This anime is Platinum to me. I realise some will disagree but this anime was beautiful to me and made me wish I could play the violin.

Tokyo Mew Mew is a manga adaptation written by Reiko Yoshida and drawn by Mia Ikumi.

I’m not sure if I have mentioned this yet, but I am from the United Kingdom. Why this is relevant now is for the simple fact of this anime was one of the few which made it to British TV. And I missed it. Along with Cardcaptor Sakura. I need see One piece though. So unlike a lot of British anime fans, I did not watch this until my teens. So my feelings for this anime is a little biased to that face.

Tokyo Mew Mew was you standard Magical Girl Shoujo anime. Nothing more, nothing less. When I looked up how many episodes it had been, I was surprised that is was only 52 episodes. To me I remember it being longer. But that might be due to having an opening scene which became incredibly popular to use in amvs.

Tokyo.Mew.Mew.600.721276

So plot. Our main heroine is Ichigo or Zoey in the English dub. Let me please state, I hate the English dub. Changing her name takes away so many of the gags its unreal! While at zoo on her first date with the most popular guy at school, Ichigo gets zapped by a mysterious ray that mixes her DNA with that of a wildcat. Which allows her and several others to transform into magical girl heroes and fight the forces of darkness. In this case, aliens known as ‘Deep Blue’.

There is nothing particular special about the shows characters. Ichigo is the normal led. Clumsy, stubborn etc. You have your rich standoffish girl,  Mint, your nerdy girl, Lettuce,  your ridiculously energetic and young girl , Purin and your lone wolf type, Zakuro. When they are not at school or fighting aliens, they all work at a maid cafe serving desserts. Which brings along its own problems and comedy moments. One point his anime does have in its favour is that the looks of the girls so actually alter slighter when they transform. Something which always amazed me about shows like Sailor Moon was the fact no one recolonized her despite her looking EXACTLY the same. This anime mostly avoided it that. Although more with Ichigo than the other characters.

Her love interest is your standard interest. Popular and clever. Everyone likes him and there is nothing to fault. Though he is of course hiding his own secrets which led to the girls being able to defend deep blue. If you can’t guess, you obvious haven’t watched enough Magical Girl animes.

While I have written this review with a fairly negative light, it was very enjoyable to watch. Mostly. It kept me entertained enough to finish any how. So Silver. Its bright and colourful. The perfect world and one which is typical for one of this genre. The girls are amusing even if there is little character development beyond the most obvious stuff.

Kuroshitsuji Season 1 Review

Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) 25353l

Kuroshitsuji is an manga adaptation written by Yana Toboso.

Last week is seemed the generator was telling me to review all the reverse harem video game adaptations I have watched. This week, it appears to be giving me animes which were made before the manga was finished. Not to say the ending to this was not well done. Black Butler 1 was an excellently made anime. Though one known for being slightly dodgy due to the artwork and the fact the author is known for drawing Yaoi. But this is very unique anime.

Set in Victorian Britain, 12 year old Lord Ciel Phantomhive works as the Queen’s guard dog. Fixing the problems the underworld of the British empire causes without anyone knowing. How? With the help of his demon butler. Sebastian. As Ciel works, he seeks to understand and unravel the plot behind Ciel’s parents’ murder, and the horrendous tragedies which Ciel was focused to experience at the age of 10. He was a slave and sacrifice for a ritual. He was torture enough that he had enough hatred to summon Sebastian. The contact is simple, Sebastian can eat Ciel’s soul when Ciel has found the people responsible for the travesty.  Ciel has a crest in his eye which when revealed lets Sebastian see where he is. To stop him practically and also to save him when needed, and given Ciel’s job, that happens more than often your normal teenage boy.

Ciel is a young teenager noble. He’s stuck up, bratty and traumatised. His family is gone and the only family member he has left after all this, he ends up having to remove. All he can count on is a demon butler who while dutiful, likes to play games. Which Ciel is fine with because he plays games back. Ciel is one of those characters you can’t help but like, though you find yourself half to time wanting to slap him and the other half wanting to hug him.

56955Sebastian is suave and extremely skilled. He can fight, defy the laws of physics and is devoted to being the perfect butler. He also loves cats. Something which is very amusing when Ciel is allergic to them. He can charm anyone, and in true demon fashion can terrify anyone as well. His and Ciel’s relationship is one of Master and servant. Sebastian will go out of his way to ensure his Lord’s needs are met but Ciel is just food to him. He is just watching as Ciel’s soul falls deeper and deeper into sin. And Ciel’s mentality does seem to decrease as the anime progresses, however arguably that is due to the dark and gory events he endures every day. He is, after all, a child. Something which erks Ceil greatly as no one takes him seriously as result. Something which he does occasionally use to his own advantage.

On top of two very well developed characters we have some excellent side characters. All four Phantomhive servants are incompetent at their jobs but amazing at killing people. All having been hunted down by Sebastian to serve on the household. Apart from one who is the oldest servant and is completely unfazed by everything which occurs. We have  grim reapers, who hate demons. Grell is my favourite. Grell is your flamboyant gay character who is slightly obsessed with death and Sebastain. You can’t miss him, he’s the one all in red with a chainsaw as a unlicensed scythe. And many more. So watch it and fall into the deep dark depths of the Victorian underworld. Fall of politics magic and murder.

This anime is a little piece of gold in my eyes and I was very sad when I finished it. I looked forward to the 2 season and was greatly disappointed.

Full Moon wo Sageshite Review

Full Moon wo Sageshite is a manga adaptation originally written by Arina Tanemura.

This anime is another anime which was made and completed before the end of its manga, leaving many differences between the two. Though I have not read the manga and can not comment on the difference other than I am aware they exist. From the perceptive of someone who has only watched the anime, I think they did an excellent job.

Full Moon wo Sageshite is possibly one of the earliest example of a Idol anime. Twelve-year-old Kouyama Mitsuki wants to be a singer. It has always been her dream. Except, she has been diagnosed with throat cancer and has one year to live. Literally as two death gods have appeared to ensure she dies in one year. Stopping anything prolonging her life, or shortening it. Upset by this Mitsuki sneaks into an audience but is too young to take part. One of the death gods,Takuto, takes pity on her, the deal being if she is not chosen she has to give up. And so he transforms her to her 16 year old self. Not realising Mitsuki can sing.

And the story is born. We watch as Meroko and Takuto defend Mitsuki from treats and keep her fate on track as she becomes a superstar. While hiding her true identity from her strict grandmother who has forbidden her from singing. Mitsuki is determined to fulfil her dream before her year is up and in the process, falls in love with Takuto.

Mitsuki is ditzy, delicate and your typical shoujo girl. Though she can be delicate as she is dying. Her heart is pure and she is what you would expect of a 12 year old facing death. Not about to let it slow her down. Her dream? For her song to be heard by an orphaned friend who was adopted in America before she could reveal her feelings to him. Best way to do this in her mind is to become a famous Idol.

The anime is sad in many ways because of the contrast reminder of Mitsuki time limit. She achieves great things and the anime does a great job of bringing the world to life. Plus the songs used are lovely songs but very 90’s style in my opinion. But that doesn’t change what is going to happen to poor Mitsuki at the end. Or does it?  Without too many spoilers the ending made up for this anime was beautiful and touching.

This anime is adorable in many ways and wonderful in many more. So Silver.
