Tide-Line Blue is an original anime.

This wasn’t  a bad anime per say. It just suffered from a few flaws. The world is falling apart and everyone is fighting each other for power. Pretty standard and guaranteed what would happen.

The anime is shown through about half a dozen points of views which made it hard to connect to any one side. The person we are most supposed to care about is a boy called Keel. Keel who was forced from his home by his twin brother and got separated from him. Teen, the twin, grew up on one side of the war and is mature and dependable. Keel was adopted by the leader of the other side and brought up with a silver spoon and doesn’t know how to anything but cheat and lie. Keel is also in love with a girl who has a baby at the beginning of the story.

tide-line-blue-3

The twins relationship is a strange one, partly because for most of the show. Keel hates Teen and because he’s now stuck with the people who brought Teen up, is constantly compared to him. I’m not sure about Teen’s feelings on Keel, except he makes it so Keel and Isla are under his father’s protection so I guess he has some feelings for him. When they finally reunite, they do start to get along, though. By the end of the show, they are friends. Not without a few fights, however.

As the story progresses I grew more interested but it was a very close start. The ending was good for the series. Seriously, though, Keel has no life skills. It’s amazing it lives through the show.

It’s alright. It has its moments when its funny bit for the most point it’s just a standard ecchi show from this period of time. The boy is 16 and is your standard pervert (aka a normal 16-year-old boy) who lives with a bunch of girls as he trains to become a monk. Why? Um. Well, I guess its a family thing? Either way.

amaenaideyo 2.png

The basic premise of this show is Ikku is a pretty weak monk and as little spiritual power  but when he sees the girls naked he turns into a super-monk and can exercise any demon. I assume because to a horny teenage boy there is no purer feeling that seeing a girl’s breasts.

The situation skits themselves are pretty standard situations for high schoolers to be in, monks in training or not. Still, they are entertaining enough. The ecchi moments are easy to spot. There are no missed opportunities here, if there is a chance, the show will make a point to empathise the girl’s boobs or pantie shots. Some of the girls care more about it than normal and will punish Ikku for making any comments.Or just being there when they are angry. He gets beaten up a lot just for being the man in the group.

amaenaideyo 1.png
Poor bloke. It’s one of the trends in ecchi anime I’m kind of glad has become less common in recent years. Aka, the ‘pervert’ being beaten up for anything which happens (even when unrelated to him) because he’s a pervert. It’s one thing when he’s actually doing something perverted or making a perverted comment but another when he’s simply in the room when one of the girls is pissed.

I guess these animes were targeted at masochists who dreamt of living in a harem and getting beaten up by the girls. Not really a healthy message to send young boys while I appreciate the fact these women are strong and independent from men. Partly in this anime because they are nuns and have sworn off relationships but meh.

Once thing which did pleasantly surprise me was the ending. For one thing, there was an actual story and plot there in a show that was mostly one show stories. It was impressive given the genre. Even if it was still a fairly ecchi premise in itself.

Anne Happy is a manga adaptation originally by  Cotoji

Anne Happy is one of those animes which properly works perfectly well as a manga but I don’t think should have been made into anime. It’s adorable and cute and very go happy. It is basically what it says on the tin. There is a class of girls who are incredibly unluckily and are being taught to be happy. Or possibly a little luckier. Anne is ridiculously unlucky and as it typically goes, incredibly happy and genki.

I’m actually struggling to come up with more to say about this anime other than ‘meh’. Ok that’s a lie, it was oddly addictive. The opening song was really good and stories got more entertaining as the show continued. Not actually sure how I went from not liking the anime to enjoying it but it happened.

anne-happy-1

The animation on this one was shoddy with silver link trying to use some 3d effects which I’m pretty much most 1st-year animation student can use down to make some of the scenes more dramatic. The movements are awkward, though they do actually move the mouths in this one unlike some of their earlier works.

Not entirely sure if the lack of faces on the other students in the case are laziness from Silver link or a style choice from the original artist. Either way, it’s a little disconcerting. Forget the jokes about major characters having brightly coloured hair in anime, in this one its simply having a face.

So yeah. Originally I gave this a bronze, I’ve since updated it to a silver. Not sure I would ever really recommend this but it had a strange charm.

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry is a light novel adaption originally by Riku Misora.

So while this is part of my weekly challenge, it was made in conjunction with Nexus. This would have had a higher grading if the little sister, Shizuku, didn’t have a brother complex. Those annoy me. Plus that ending.

This story started strong for me. It’s fairly typical in plot type and the characters are also nothing special. A guy, Ikki, who technically classified as ‘weak’ is actually quite strong and a girl, Stella, who is known for being powerful is defeated by him and falls in love because of it. Both of the MCs are likeable and entertaining to watch. Love or not, they make good friends and cheer each other on against the various hurdles they face.

Plus there is a trans girl who is called Alice. The characters barely register this to be fair, though there is some misgendering at first. It was interesting to have such a character who wasn’t introduced as a cross dresser. If anything Alice is still very much seen as a boy by most people. This was something I was interested in watching develop to see how the author/studio treated this character.

Calvalry 1.png

(Ok, I said I rated down because of the older brother complex but it was actually kind of amusing at times.)

The basic story is they are at a school for magicians and there is a competition to decides who is to represent the school in some kind of tournament. Ikki has a low level of magic but is good at fighting with swords and as such can keep up. In order to graduate because of his low magic, he needs to win and be selected as a representative. Skill can beat power is the message here and not necessarily a bad one. The fight scenes are extremely well done, as are the effects.

The budget on this one feel considerably higher than other silver link productions and the quality is higher as a result. That being said the character designs are still pretty standards, but the weapons that appear when they are fighting were pretty cool.

Calvalry 3.png

What made this anime pretty special was despite the harem theme (it’s not officially harem but with Alice identifying as a girl, Ikki is the only real male character which makes it harem to me), really there was only one real love pairing. The others had crushes on him, but Ikki starts going out with Stella with like ep 4? Part of the troubles they face include normal relationship issues which is nice compared to the normal ‘how can I get his attention?’ issues which normally appear in this genre.

Then the ending. The last episode was good. I like it, it suited the show. I didn’t like the episode before it. It basically came out of nowhere and then rushed to the finale in a way which personally ruined the series for me. The amount the forced into it was ridiculous. I can only assume they thought they were getting a second season and when that didn’t appear, rushed to make an finale. It was so bad! The rest of the story was easily a silver or possible a gold but this! This knocked it way down for me. Which was a shame really because I had really enjoyed it up until then.

Bonjour♪Koiaji Pâtisserie is a video game adaption. A mobile game for girls that (according to wiki) is still in development. Which is strange, because it normally is the opposite way round.

Bronze
This anime was easy to watch and in many ways in very good for a reverse harem programme. It has beautiful shoujo characters, all of which are bases we have seen a billion times before. This anime does not get any points for originality with the art design but it is animated well.

bonjour-2The characters personalities are a touch bland but they aren’t unrealistic like some are. Their back stories are a little more outlandish but given what it’s an adaptation of it’s no surprise. The lead girl is amusing and while she is clearly falling for all the boys she does have a personality which is nice. When studios make otome game adaptations (or any adaptation where the MC is someone that would have been the playable character) there is a danger that the character ends up either too unbelievable or without any personality at all.

The plot line itself is pretty standard. Some people commented it was a rip off of ‘Yumeiro Patissiere’ but I can’t judge as I have not watched that anime. I can say it was similar to Uta no Prince-sama. The MCs even look similar to me and both are in a situation where love is forbidden. In this case, because 3/4 of the male love interests are teachers. Oh, and the ending were basically sparkles galore and considerably deeper than it should have been.

I give this anime a bronze. It would have been higher if only they had put some more care into it. Each of the 24 episodes were 5 mins long and it were the skits were entertaining, there were few clues about the timeframe everything was going on it. I think they could have made this a decent 13 full-length episodes with the right people behind it, but oh well. A chance lost, unfortunately.

C3 Cube x Cursed x Curious is a Light novel adaptation by  Hazuki Minase.

Bronze – Just

Having watched this all the way through I came to two conclusions. They had no idea what they were making when they made this. It’s in their preferred ‘moe’ style and while it’s very colourful and the palette is very pretty, art does not make up for a bad story. Or rather, in this case, extremely bad story telling.

The second conclusion is that they knew they were getting a second season so instead of trying, they just shoved as much as they could into the 13 episodes they had. If ever you wondered what a story looks without the padding, this is it. It’s way too rushed and feels it. There is no time to connect to the characters or believed they form any real connections to each other. There are three story arcs and it really feels like if they had just taken their time and made 26 episodes it would have been considerably better.

The supernatural elements to this story are often explained in the form of an information dump, in a way which is usually boring and occasionally just plain confusing. Too much information at once and just leaves the view wondering if they needed all that information. It’s almost like they did their research without working out just what makes these types of shows likeable. Even the sodding fight scenes are yawn worthy.

standard
The characters are tropish to the point of looking like carbon copies of other programmes. There is no unique character designs or any real form of characters development in this anime and if there is, it is stuffed into an information dump. Even their basic information is basically stated all in one go and then the rest of the program just treats everything like normal because it’s already known. Basically leaving nothing to be worked out, fleshed out or even made so we can even remotely care about the characters. Hence the bad fight scenes.

The fight scenes are sparkly but with no real to care for the characters or what them to win, they are kind of just sparkles and blood. A considerable amount of blood and gore for the the moe style. I’m assuming the were trying to shock people? I seriously don’t think they knew what they were doing. They just seem to throw effects on everything without care.

130281The main character is incredibly cute and annoying. Her ‘normal’ appearance is that  of a child and her voice matches but when she’s more in her [form I have no clues what to call. Cursed object form maybe?] her voice is mature as an adult. The story will go dark and serious at strange moments and just switches without warning or story clues. She at least has a clear split personality. The others have no excuse for the dramatic switches in personality.

It is a harem/ecchi anime it’s not as ecchi as you would assume. There are a few panty shots and a few breast groping moments but to be honest, most of the episodes are clean and you can almost forget its meant to be an ecchi,to be honest. Until episode 9 where there is basically a tentacles scene and you are shocked back into realisation. Either that or modern anime as just shocked me into not really noticing mild stuff anymore.

Also, the enemy for the first arc of the program is an annoying blonde whose catchphrase is ‘bitch’. Gets extremely annoying. It is the only real curse word in the whole thing and just feels out of place.

The voice acting is fab, most of the issues for the speaking of the characters is down to lazy animating. They can add sparkles all they want to the scenes but it’s not hiding the fact that the studio was extremely lazy at making people’s mouths move when they are talking in this one. The mouths move but that’s it. No real shapes other than ones used for emotions.sparkles

Oh and the music! Half-assed at best. Some attempted made but it’s not edited together very well. The beginning and ends songs are good but when they cut from a fighting scene to the soft and gentle ending music, it’s not very dramatic. Just leaves you feeling unimpressed and unenthused with the editing .I do wonder why the opening chances at ep9? we have 4 episodes of a different opening than the original and it makes no real scene as it wouldn’t have been a new anime season? Unless they just didn’t want to waste one made for if they got a season 2, I guess.

so yeah. Not one I’m likely to go back to again.

Aldnoah Zero Review

Aldnoah Zero71297l

Completed 2015

Type: TV
Episodes: 24/24
Aired: Jul 6, 2014 to March 2015
A Manga adaptation, written by Pinakes

Aldnoah Zero is not a bad anime. But it suffers from some fatal flaws. The anime has a dramatic and sober air to it. With a plot that had potential to be something great but then something happened and I’m not sure what. It dropped. The action became generic. More generic than normal for an anime which involves one boy being able to defeat aliens no one else can. The plot as well went from very interesting, to a tale which we have all seen before in one shape or another.

The art was bland. Nothing special, the same crisp lines we have been seeing for a while. I was actually expecting it to be by the same director/designer of Owari no Serph but it is not so. There are occasional when I feel you could have copy and pasted the characters into each others stories and it would have had little effect.

Characters, like the art are your standard breed. Like someone just looked up what characters do you need in an Mecha anime. The Princess is bathed in a white dress, blonde with a heart as big as her green eyes. She loves everyone she meets but there are forces working against her. Spends much of the anime in cryogenics.Aldnoah Zero 1

Her lady in waiting is a young girl who is naive and scared of everything. With the other girls, despite being soldiers they remain high school girls pretty much. Unable to do much, Even the main guys sister who was in the army from the beginning wails pathetically when things aren’t going right. No character growth at all. Ignoring one girl who is a plot point, but even her growth is your standard *yawn* seen it a million times.

The story is spilt between the two sides. Earth and Mars. Mars is a monarchy and as such is all proper and prim. No feeling and lot of multiplication and backstabbing. We watch as earth born Slaine finds to find his place in the Mars army to help his beloved princess. Facing discrimination along the way for being terran born. Slaine rarely showing emotion other than towards his princess and is very resourceful.

On the Earth side we watch Inaho, an emotionless boy who has fallen for the princess, fight to protect his friends and survive. All stoic and endlessly brooding. Knowing things that no one seems to understand. Either the characters nor the audience. I assure to give him some kind of mythical untouchable air. It makes a change from the cheeky rascal we are usually given except, with Slaine personally being so similar…

I only have one question for this anime. What happened to the originality we saw in the first season? This turned into another carbon copy which I would not recommend to anyone. So Bronze

4907l

The artwork of this anime is beautiful. Bright bold colours, and often two sets of colours in shading. It also has some cool  ideas for future objects, including a hover scooter. Beyond that and its charming nature, their is little else to say about this anime. Like many of its genre its very much your standard light heart coming of age/slice of life anime. The girls fight though their problems and achieve their goals. All while having fun and enjoying life.

So Bronze i guess.

Weiß Kreuz is a light novel adaptation written by Kenichi Kanemaki and illustrated by Kyoko Tsuchiya.

So why am I watching this when I have the weekly challenge? Simple, Ufotable seems to have several series which are sequels of previously made animes. So I started with this.

The animation is terrible, but has a very realistic tint to it. This is an anime created in the 90s after all. The movements are stilted. The voice acting also so. The lines blurry even in the highest definition I could find. But like all 90s animes, you don’t watch them now for their animation quality. You watch them for their story. I do think anyone who tries to compare this with animation now is silly. It was not good bad then, its terrible now. Simple. knight 3

Also this is rated 13+. I think it says a lot about how we have progressed that this was only rated a 13. Now it would likely be 17+. With themes involving prostitutes, life or death games, guns, violence and much much more this anime is not for children. At least when you compare it to Magi which was given a 15 in England, certainly this anime would have been given higher!

This is a show about assassins trying to kill their targets who are usually up to no good. The first few episodes introduce us to this characters, explaining their back stories and how they ended up with the group. From careers ruins to lost lovers. The stories are sad and only a touch clique. Ultimately this anime is pretty standard in its premise. Its one we have seen a thousand times and one we are likely to see a thousand times again. This show is also meant to be a bishounen show. Full of handsome men and beautiful woman. Except the the bad animation ruins that.

knight 2The story itself is passable. Nothing new, more particularly exciting but there. See Bad guy. Stop bad guy. Met cute girl in process. Girl survival rate 50/50 in process. Because we haven’t seen this formula a couple hundred times and somehow I doubt it was original back in the 90s either. One of the detectives turns out to be related to the bad guys. One of others has a sister in a coma. Its all very clique. So Bronze. Its not something I would say people need to particularly go back and see but its not a bad ride.

Non Non Biyori is a manga adaptation written by Atto.

There is a growing problem in Japan, in that with more and more people living in the cities, the schools in rural areas are more and more stretched for resources due to the small number of students attending them. Non Non Biyori is set in one such area. Hotaru transfers to the countryside because of her father’s job. Hotaru who lived in Tokyo and now has to get used to living in the sticks. Her new school has 5 students ranging from 1st grade to 9th grade. Three of them are siblings. The boy rarely saying a word, if any. And the youngest child’s sister is the one teacher *cough cough* babysitter of the children. Which she fails at.

Non Non Biyori 2

Non Non Biyori doesn’t really have much going on other than daily life. The problems and joys of living in the middle of nowhere which little to do other than waste the day away. It is quite simply another anime, as charming as it is, which is about girls living. The comedy is light at best, nothing major. It’s fine. Non Non Biyori 1

That’s all I can really say. It’s fine. Which is why it gets a bronze. Chances are, in a year I won’t remember what happened in this anime. It was sweet and charming in its own way I guess.

If you liked this, I’d recommend Barakumon. It has more plot but the same issues of someone moving from a city to the countryside.
