Binbougami Ga! is a manga adaptation originally written by Yoshiaki Sukeno.

So this anime is tagged as Parody, though I’m not really sure what it is a parody of. There are a lot of really extreme characters. There are also a lot of references to other animes which are hilarious. A lot to dragonball, to many to others as well, including death note, which is shown below because it was brilliantly done. This anime is happy to make jokes out of itself. Binbou Gami Ga 1A basic summary of this anime is the fri-enemy-ship between a girl who has too much fortune and is a bit of a bitch, and a god of misfortune who has been sent to fix the imbalance. Ichiko is a girl blessed with having too much fortune. To many she seems untouchable and an angel. In reality she’s a arrogant bitch who loves getting her own way and doesn’t really care about other people. Though I do love her, I call her a bitch affectionately in this one. I love animes about girls who are not frail and this anime is it. All three of the female leads are not afraid to throw a punch or say something bluntly.

Ichiko had a bad childhood, a rich heiress whose parents had no time for her and her only real carer was her butler. This with the fact a lot of her friends used her as a child meant she struggles to make friends and only really uses people. So when Momoji crashes into her life, things being to get interesting.

Binbou Gami Ga 4

Momoji is a lazy god of misfortune. Not death. Misfortune. Her job to take the masses of fortune which Ichiko has a redistribute it to people who need it. Except who would want to go near that big ass needle? Not Ichiko, she avoids Momoji’s attempted to steal her fortune easily, occasionally letting it happen to safe people. During the rare moments when she is feeling sympathetic to other people. Not that she ever admits it. Ichiko and Momoji’s relationship is a strange one. They are pretty much best friends. Kind of. They insult each other and beat each other up but their is definitely a fondness there. A fondness between two bitches but it exists. Something which only grows as a third girl is added. The tomboy Rindou. Who was brought up pretty much as a boy by her father.Binbou Gami Ga 2

Momoji’s arrival means that Ichiko has to deal with a lot of madness which comes with her including a perverted black monk, and a m-type inugami. Plus a new friend at show shows up.Theses guys are only really in the show for comedy relieve but their appearances are well done and often the only real ecchi type scenes in the show. Despite the fansercive heavy opening and closing. Along with two classmates with their own problems, we watch as the two girls cause choas and try to defeat each other. While watching Ichiko grow slightly into a more well rounded person. She still has a sharp tongue but she slowly begins to understand other people due to accidents with Momoji’s plans.

I found this series awesome and I fully recommend it to anyone who like comedy programs! Gold.

Beelzebub is a manga adaptation written by Ryuuhei Tamura.

If pikachu was a naked demon baby… and Ash was a delinquent… Ok no, this anime isn’t anything like pokemon but Beelzebub does love to electric shock Oga as much as Pikachu does Ash at the beginning. This anime is a brilliant its just a shame it ruined itself by having so many fillers and rushing the ending. Honestly, I have no idea what happened! We had like 10 episodes of just filler material and then poof, a finale in like 3 episodes which could have been spread over those 10 episodes and made considerably better. Why? Did the manga run out? Did the author not tell you the plan? Did you think you would be getting a second season and then discover it wasn’t happening anymore? What happened?

Beelzebub 01

Beelzebub is the tale of a high school delinquent who though certain events ends up raising the son of the devil in order to destroy humanity. Oga is no normal delinquent though, he is a delinquent at the worst school in Japan! where they are 120% delinquents and also extremely dumb. Due to his evil nature, Beelzebub decides he likes Oga and makes a bond with him. The side effect of the bond being that Oga can never be more than 15 metres away from him without getting an electric shock. Also if Beezlebub cries or gets upsets, he electrifies everyone in a certain radius. The bonus thing being that he can use Beelzebub’s power from time to time to increase his own attacks.

Beelzebub 03Oga is your typical delinquent. Not too bright and uses his fists before his brains. The first half of the series is dedicated to Oga defeating every delinquent in his school in order to find someone stronger than himself. Not to mention having to deal with all the problems which come with raising a demon child with powers who likes to cause chaos. Seriously if Beelzebub gets bored, bad things start happening.Beelzebub 02

Luckily for Oga, help is at hand for all the Beezlebub related problems. Notably from Beezlebubs demon maid, Helda. A fierce demon who has no qualms with beating up Oga or his best friend if they aren’t doing their jobs properly. She is also fiercely devoted to raising Beezlebub in the correct demon manner. Helda is a fantastic character, if not a little dense from time to time. But considering what she has to work with, its not surprising. Oga is frustrating to say the least.

Beelzebub 05This anime possibly by favourite fix for lack of plot ever! So once Oga has defeated everyone in the school and is known as Ishiyama’s strongest, what next? Well Oga in the last fight destroys the school. In order to combat this all the students get divided into groups and have to go to other schools. Oga and his best friends end up at St Ishiyama Academy, an elite school where they are confined to a special class for the Ishiyama students. Which just so happens to have the people they defeated in it. After that the plot is mostly don’t get expelled and to defeat the demons who are trying to kill them so Beezlebub’s brother can destroy humanity first. Lord En is cute but his servants are annoying.

maxresdefault

So I give this anime a silver. Its outstanding and has a lot of laughs in it. The characters are brilliant and this anime doesn’t bother trying to give them deep background stories. They are just delinquents. A little extreme and very crazy delinquents, but delinquents none the less. This animes takes the cliques and runs with them.

Hikaru no Go is a manga adaptation written by Yumi Hotta and drawn by Takeshi Obata.
Gold. An unexpected Jewel. This anime is in many ways like so many of its genre and yet in completely different. Or maybe just has more feeling in it.  Like so many games/sporting animes, Hikaru no Go is about a boy who falls in love with a game and seeks to become the best. Except, that’s not how it starts. Really it starts with a ghost. Sai.
hikaru no go 4Sai is a ghost who is about 1000 years old. While alive he worked as the court go master but for various reasons ended up dying before he could achieve his dream and discovering the ultimate move. Or rather the ultimate game. The hand of god. Sai now haunts a go board and when Hikaru touches it while searching though his granddad’s shed, possesses him.
Sai is a childish man. He loves to be over dramatic and pouts when Hikaru won’t let him play go. He is also very curious about how the world has changed and the people who now play go. But he is also very deep and philosophical. He doesn’t know how much time he has left after all, only knowing it will run out and Hikaru is possibly his last chance to achieve the hand of god. Except, something happens that Sai wasn’t expecting. Hikaru starts to want to play himself.
hikaru-no-go-249-1
A minor problem for both of them as Sai wishes to play, though he is more than happy to teach the young Hikaru to play. As for Hikaru, he is known as a genius and for him to suddenly start losing games is more than his rival can take. And so the story unfolds. More than just Sai achieving his wish but Hikaru growing up and his ascend into the Go playing world. Literally watch Hikaru grow up.
Time passes in this anime and we watch as Hikaru grows from being a elementary student, up until high school. He’s a stubborn brat the whole way though, but we do watch as he develops into a young man and the experiences he has. The friends he makes, the trails he faces, they are all part of the world he has unexpectedly found himself want to know more about.  Hikaru is a likeable character and portrays the emotions of a young boy very well. He gets upset when his friends leave him. He is ecstatic when he wins a game. He wants to win and is determined to do so. Also things can be very serious to him, even if they are not as serious to us. This anime is most definitely worth a watch.
hikaru no goThis is not Hikaru’s story though. This anime is full of interesting characters who sweep you up into the world and keep you paying attention. From his childhood friend Akira to his main rival  Akira Toya. Touya especially. Touya is the son of the current master of Go and has been training his whole life to follow in his father’s footsteps. He is frustrated by his boy who has suddenly appeared in front of him who sometimes plays like a pro and other times like a new player. That doesn’t stop him going to Hikaru’s aide when he gives up Go to give him the kick up the ass he needs. Touya has few friends and I think you can indeed class these two are friends. Disjoined as they are.
245267540165525504_35s_d 2
The others around them can not help but watch this younger generation as they seek to topple the current gods. The presence of Sai unsettling them all, either though Hikaru or over the net. Especially the net. Everyone wondering who who Sai is and just what is Hikaru’s connection to him?
This anime is platinum to me. Its bold and daring. The emotions raw and true. Everything from the script to the music is exciting and draws you in with a tight grip. The art is a little dated now but the HD version has been enchanted so it is bright and the lines are clear.

B Gata H Kei is a manga adaptation originally written by Yoko Sanri.

If I was to explain this anime in a sentence, its sounds pretty bad and like your standard ecchi anime. Yamada is a 15 year old girl who wants to have sex with 100 men, but is a virgin and has no idea at all what to do.

What does this boil down to? A surprisingly good coming of age comedy about a girl who despite having sex on her minds 24/7 is surprisingly innocent and naive when it boils down to these matters. This anime is pretty ballsy, and while it does have the odd fan service scene, there is less than in a lot of other animes. Its more comedy than anything else. Yamada really wants to have sex.B Gata H Kei 4 But she has no real ideas on how to seduce a boy into having sex with her. Leaving our male lead, Kosuda, confused often, especially in regards to their relationship. Yamada herself isn’t sure for most of the anime. On a day when my university lecturer commented they have too many herbivorous boys and not enough carnivorous boys but all girl are carnivorous in japan, this anime just rang true. Yamada takes some pretty bold risks while trying to seduce Kosuda. Plus her mind turns everything dirty. Everything is a chance for her to show off and to gain more followers/slaves.

B Gata H Kei 7

Kosuda is a normal looking guy who doesn’t really have any outstanding features. Which is why Yamada has picked him to be her first time. After all, as inexperienced as she is, she doesn’t want people making fun of her for it. So she picks another virgin who should be happy to have the goddess which is Yamada doting on him. Kosuda is a nice guy, and gets very fluttered by some of the attention he gets from Yamada. He in the photography club and has an older sister who is a massive tomboy and as dense as he is when it comes to romantic matters. Kind of.B Gata H Kei 5

So why do I love this anime? I knew more than a few girls like this when I was her age. Which is why I feel very sorry for her best friend who has to deal with her crazy antics. After all, there is nothing like being the mature one while your friend is immature and running around yelling about sex. Another reason I think this a very good anime because for once it shows what some girls are actually like. Not all are frail delicate flowers who only have pure hearted intentions. Some are hormonal wreaks who are obsessed with getting the D. Seriously I can remember one classmate asking around if anyone knew anyone who would be willing to take their virginity before they turned 16. Girls can be just as obsessed with sex as boys and it is refreshing to see an anime which shows a girl in this manner, admittedly a more extreme example but still very true to how some girls can be. Part of me can’t help but wonder if the author wrote this about their own experiences or about a friends and inserted some of the gags because despite the over-the-topness it does run true.
B Gata H Kei 6At that age, a lot of girls want to have sex but aren’t actually ready too. Yamado is definitely not ready, despite her complains otherwise. The first time they kiss properly, she runs away and blushes. Flashing Kosuda leaves both of them embarrassed and red faces. Also this anime doesn’t really do the whole ‘nose bleed means boner/turned on’ thing, which makes a change. Instead we get hilarious moments when Kosuda realises he turned on and prompts does sits up etc. Its fantastic and far more funny than the standard tropes. Not that his anime doesn’t have the tropes in, it has plenty. Including the one I like the least, aka the big brother complex. But luckily its one of the minor characters and at tolerable levels. Sort of.

Either was  as this anime goes on, we watch as Yamado learns that sex and emotion aren’t as easily separated as she first though, either is seduction. So I give this anime a silver. For the gags and the fact they manage to portray a girl in the middle of puberty surprising well. Not to mention a whole cast of other characters who end up swept up in the midst of it all.

This anime possibly could have been good. Had it not been trying to be some kind of spin off from Soul Eater. Soul Eater was amazing. From its opening and artwork to its story. Whoever made this needs to be fired from anime. If you are going to but a name of the original anime in the spin off title, at least try to make it as good as the original! Don’t change the artstyle, the world and make all the characters pathetic creatures who pale in comparison to the original characters.

Soul Eater Not! is most definitely not Soul Eater, it is no way near soul eater in quality or dynamic. Just another set of nameless girls who fail to be anything than their character assignment. With some cheap yuri scenes thrown in. An anime which likely would not have gotten any real attention if it did not someone with big boobs and shared a name with a actually good anime. Its weak and bland.

The concept could have been brilliant. What they gave us though was beyond terrible. This was possibly the biggest disappointment I have ever felt towards an anime.

Afro Samurai is a manga adaptation written by Takashi Okazaki.

A dark and dull coloured anime to suit a dark and cruel story. Afro Samurai is certainly one of the most unique stories I have seen in a long time. Sure the idea of someone avenging their murder father is hardly a new concept. However this anime as whole new levels. The artwork is truly stunning as it the battle scenes. They are full of action and movement. Fluid not stagnant. And lots of blood. Oh this anime has lots of blood, made more prevail due to its dark screen tones.

The Afro Samurai wears the no 2 headband. The no 2 headband is fated to be alone. The only one allowed to challenge the no 1 warrior in the land. And many men will fight hard in order to gain that honour. After all the no 2 is beatable. He is a man. While no 1 is considered a god. The no 1 headband once belonged to Afro’s father and he was forced to watch as a child as his father was defeated. Justice cutting off his fathers head before challenging him to return one day to defeat him too. Afro then dedicates his live to gaining revenge. Even at the cost of those who take him in. Though that story alone is a tragedy.

afroagainstkuma(2)-868536

The fight scene between Afro and Gino really got my heart strings. Once brothers fighting against each other in a blooded rage. Never to be reconciled due to the losses they have faced and the trails they have been though in this cruel world. There are few moments of happiness in this anime, if any. And often quickly soured. There is just blood and harsh realism of the land they live for much of this anime. Where every warrior is aiming for that no 2 headband.

Its dark and gritty. The fight scenes only really broken up by the endless chatter of Afro’s companion Ninja. Ninja who is always making quirks and its never really clear whose side Ninja is on. But he follows Afro to the end of the world regardless. The moment he dies is tragic, especially when you realise who or rather what he is.

And that ending…

To say I enjoyed this anime would be lie. It was hard going but it had me hooked. I could not tear my eyes from the screen. A scene of terror and dread as the story unfolded and we learned more and more about Afro and his past. And his future. I give Afro Samurai platinum because I honestly can’t compare it to any other animes. It is truly a unique anime to me.afro-samurai

Fairy Tail was a manga adaptation written by Hiro Mashima.

TFairy_Tail_Intro_&_Outro_Themes_Vol.2_Regularhis anime started good. Honestly in my opinion, what it suffers from it that the manga itself starts with a good story which that filters into a weak one. If the base manga is weak, the anime isn’t much better. The first season is good. But when I tried to get into the next one, I struggled to have any interest.

There are ecchi moments but nothing too scandalous. I do enjoy Hiro Mashima’s work and the ideas in this was are good. Lucy is a 17 year old who wants to join the famous mage guild Fairy Tail. Lucy is a ‘key’ user. The keys let her form contracts with spirits to use in battle. Including someone very familiar for people who know Hiro Mashima’s work. Though as he reuses a lot of character models that’s not hard.  Lucy is a fine character. She’s not amazing, she not over powered and she normally needs some help. But she’s not whiny. Or at least at the start she isn’t.

Natsu is the high mage who is a fun character. He’s social and like to laugh. He also gets travel sickness and is a dragon. Notably Natsu is one of the stronger characters. He and Lucy strike up an friendly bond and they are sweet together.

I don’t think I can give this a rating. Season 1 was a silver. I can’t say I would have recommended it to many people. I’m almost impressed by how long this anime ended up.  Maybe one day I will give it another chance. But for now I can live without it.

Disclaimer: This are my own opinions are in no reflect anyone else. If someone disagrees, feel free to comment with your own.

Japanese movie and anime creators have never been afraid of challenging ideas and there is a very good example of an anime done right. Its set in world not too unlike our own, however given aspects to ensure it is not ours.  Eight and Twelve would not exist for the simple fact of science is not yet up to the level which would allow them too. Is it? They are not meant to exist in there own after all.

Conspiracies aside. This is an anime about Terrorists. About the world they inhabit and about the girl who gets swept along with them. The cliques are there. Mother issues, the girl being unable to cook and smoking out the apartment etc. But they are well written in and are part of the story instead of just being ‘there’. It also manages to avoid the three ‘typical’ scenes.  It does however have a woman with impossible hair.

This anime is clever. It takes elements of the real world and mixes them in with the sort of luck and ability that only make belief characters are capable off. So far. One day there may be someone able to pull of what these character too, but so far, that has not happened.

There has been a terrorist attack in one of the main areas of Tokyo. The only clues as to the culprits being a video uploaded to the internet by two men in masks. Nine and Twelve. The world searches for these mysterious men as they put their plans in to play. Except things never go as planned and they get caught in the act by one of their classmates. Lisa. A girl with her own demons. Not to mention, the government bring in someone from their past to hunt them down. Someone who turned into what they were supposed to be.

This anime is rarely light hearted, but the characters cling on to you until the final scene. Then you cry. The ending is heart-wrenching but in many ways perfect for what this anime is. A reminder than even if you manage to succeed and change the world. There are always consequences. Always people who will want revenge.

To me, this anime was Gold.
