Ichigo Mashimaro is a manga adaptation originally by Barasui.

Gold

This anime has been described as tooth-rotting sweetness. It’s an apt description. This is about five girls, one who is 20, smokes and is in university (Itou) and four who are still in primary school and are best friends. Itou watches over the four young girls and their antics which often breed trouble. The four girls have fairly distinct personalities which mesh together well.

It’s cute, well designed and the animation is well done. I’m actually quite curious about the manga now because of the story itself. They are just silly little skits but they are very entertaining. There is a standard on about going to a festival, but there are also ones about finding jobs and losing weight.

Miu, in particular, is a strange mix of adorable and annoying. She’s extremely energetic and random. Which basically means she gets into the most trouble and is often the centre of attention. She does have a soft side too and gets lonely on occasion when the others don’t cater to her madness. Doesn’t stop the watcher wanting to strangle the girl at times but meh.

One thing which is amusing is the use of cigarettes in the programme. Itou smokes and it is an ongoing thing that she needs a part time job to pay for them and borrows money off her sister. In some ways, it makes it more realistic because people do smoke but I can’t imagine it happening in modern anime.

So it’s cute, has a good plot line and has good animation. Plus I enjoyed it lots. So Gold.

Sankarea is a manga adaptation originally written by Mitsuru Hattori.

Put until the last two episodes, I was going to put this as silver maybe even a gold if the ending matching up the the beginning, but the ending spoiled this anime to me. Basically the ending was weak. It was not bad romance because just the anticlimactic-ness of it all. If I’m honest, the fact we had two random episodes about minor characters instead of the main plot line was already counting against it. While one explained a bit of the emotions of the one of the main-ish character, the other was just plain filler. As was the last episode. Nothing to the plot, other than an excuse to have fireworks so the main characters could hopefully could reveal their feeling for each other. And fail. As the anime trope goes. Though the final bit was certainly not a normal trope.

This anime is different. The premise being familiar but new in anime form. A human boy falls in love with a zombie girl. Except it more, he falls in love with a girl who then becomes a zombie. What I liked about this anime was that it had a strong beginning. The characters were well introduced, as was the story. A boy obsessed with zombies is trying to work out how to resurrect his dead pet when a beautiful girl stumbles on him. A girl with a dark family life. Who he then promises that if she ever becomes a zombie, he’ll look after her. Not for one moment thinking it will actually happen.

Sankarea 01

Aka, her father is obsessed with her. Beyond unhealthy levels. Much to her mothers unhappiness. We know at the end of the first episode this girl is destined to return to him as a zombie but it is a few episodes before that occurs. Instead we watch as her father tries to control her while she sneaks out to met with him. When she finally dies, we watch something as she arises from the dead. Not that it stops her fathers obsession at all. hadena-sankarea-03-10bit720p72e36eea-mkv_snapshot_21-58_2012-06-24_13-33-27

I did like the symbolism in this anime. In Japan there is a strong connection between hydrangeas and death. Beautfiul flowers which have a dark meaning in Japanese culture. That they could bring someone back to life was a cool idea. The idea to make it so they could preserve zombies and let them life longer before turning feral was ok. It makes sense, if they are the key ingredient that a supply of them is needed to remain alive but it seemed to be missing something. Not that the story would have been better if Rea had been fighting the desire to eat flesh.sankarea-06-40

The thing which really disappointed me about this anime was the ending with the father. This guy is a real sicko. Claiming to be protecting his daughter’s purity. They go though this whole build up of him kidnapping them both and dramatic revelations. And then nothing. Barely a fight, and then he just accepts what they want. This is a guy who paid for people to follow and kidnap his daughter and her friend and he just… lets her stay with him? I don’t know what I expected but something a bit more dramatic/interesting than that!

If someone was the ask me about this anime I’d properly tell them to give it a go. But I’m not likely to recommend it of the tip of my head. It had a really interesting premise and a good if not twisted story built around it but while it passed barely on the romance side, the other aspects failed to satisfy when could have been. This anime could have been so good. But it failed to deliver. So Bronze

Air is a video game adaptation developed by Key.

Air’s a weird anime. Its sweet in its own way and unlike so many anime’s of its genre doesn’t have a thousand girls for the main guy to pick from. Yukito Kunisaki is a man on a mission! That mission is to locate the winged maiden. A story told to him by his mother and one he wants to prove is real. He is basically a hobo who ‘works’ as a travelling puppeteer but fails miserably to actually get any money. Yukito ends up in a small coastal town and meets three girls who all potentially could help him with his quest.

Our main female interest is a high school girl called Misuzu. Misuzu is seemingly your stereotypical blond girl. Clumsy and naive. Yukito ends up working as her babysitter as her adoptive mother is busy doing something. Misuzu and Yukito’s story is a powerful one, filled with ups and downs as Yukito discovered Misuzu’s illness and has to comprehend just how such a girl is so optimistic in the face of so much sadness.

I have to admit, I remember more about the beginning of air than the ending. This is one of those animes I remember enjoying at the time, but little of the plot has remained with me. Other than the ending is one which was very bitter-sweet and didn’t actually answer all the questions the anime brought to life about this sleepy town. I do recall Air is an anime which can be very confusing at times.

Considering his anime was made in 2005, Air is a stunningly beautiful anime. The lines were clear cut and the animation for the scenery was amazing. They really put some time and effort in to making this world come alive.

At first I wasn’t sure what to give this anime, but I think at the end of things I will give it a silver. Its beautiful and the story touching. One day, when I have time, I fully intend to re-watch it.

Kyoukai no Kanata is a light novel adaptation originally written by Nagomu Torii.
Kyoukai no Kanata is your atypical demon and curses story. Except really not. So our leading character is half shade, half human. A teenage boy called  Akihito Kanbara who has a megane fetish (glasses for anyone not used to the term). Akihito is a pervert simply, but hes a loyal friend and seemingly has a lot of good friends around him. Due to his half demon nature, he is also impossible to kill. He is walking home one day from school when he sees a girl about to jump of the roof of the school. In a panic, he runs up the stairs and declares anyone who looks as good as she does in glasses shouldn’t die or else it would be a waste! Her responible. Well Umm.

Stabbing-Akihito

So she stabs him with a sword made from her own blood. Turns out Mirai Kuriyama is from a demon hunting family which is cursed with the ability to manpilate their blood. Becuase of this everyone in her family was killed and Mirai lives her life isolared from everyone because of the misfortunes which come over her. Mirai, to be blunt, is a bit of a twit. She’s clusmy, rude and doesn’t think before she speaks. She has no friends, and no money either.  She then spends her days challenging Akihito to battles in order to improve her skills and eventually Akihito manages to befriend her though a method which has never failed! Feeding her.

This anime is full of issues. No one is entirely happy, either cursed, suffering from family issues or just messed up. But still the pull together to life a happy but atypical high school life. All while waiting for a big evil to appear. Despite being short at 12 episodes, they still manage to waste some with fillers, which do dampen the story a bit. Though the Idol episode was amazing.

Those outfits! And within the plot as well. All in all, I enjoyed this anime. I liked the blossoming romance between Akihito and Mirai. I enjoyed watching as they all slowly grew and worked out their issues and I certainly was not expecting the twist at the end. Akihito feeling towards his friends as well. It was different take, I think, to a commonly used trope. I.e someone’s half demon and theoretically could go berserk but we can’t actually kill them.

The art was very standard but clean. What you would expect from a light novel adaptation really. The magic was very well done, very sparkly and glow-ey.  I can’t say I had any real problems with this anime. Even the ‘Onisan/imoto’ fetish was done at reasonable levels and more of a joke than anything else. Akihito mother was inspiring as well, though the fact she’s the human does lead the question about his father and just how he came to be.

Anyway. I give this a silver. Its entertaining and enjoyable. What more could you want from a 12 episode series?

Amagi Brilliant Park is a light Novel Adaptation written by Shoji Gatoh and illustrated by Yuka Nakajima.

I enjoyed this anime. It made me laugh and I genuinely enjoyed the plot of this short anime. It is no masterpiece. It is not one I will buy merchandise for or even really recommend to anyone unless I am out of ideas. However it was a fun anime to watch. Those two standards would seem to contradict themselves but in the end there are plenty of anime that I have watched and

Amagi Brilliant Park

enjoyed but are just that. Entertainment. I rate this anime as silver because chances are in a five years I will not remember its name but I will remember its plot.

At first glance it is not particularly special. Slightly different from the normal anime set while the characters in high school, in that is it not actually set at high school.

We start there. A seemingly normal boy, Seiya Kanie, is forced to go a date with a new student. Isuzu Sento. By forced, I mean by gun point. The location of this date? Amagi Brilliant Park! Well, not so brilliant. The bus stop is at the wrong place, most of the attractions are in despair and the food is awful. Except the croquettes. Made by the parks very own princess. Latifa.

Latifa is pretty much a typically young princess. Big hearted and thinks the best of people. She is also the princess of a magically land and the park works as a battery for the magic of that land. With this in mind and considering the park is in danger of being closed meaning the denzions of the park would dissappear, Sento is given the task of saving the park. Why? He’s 1) a perfertist, and 2) a former Child Star who has lost his way.

And so the tale begins. The epic journey Sento takes to whip the park into shape and get  250,000 vistors to walk though the park gates in under 3 months. A seemingly impossible task. But one Sento undertakes. Trust me, he has his work cut out for him. And the story unfolds. There is romance, but honestly I love this more for the comedy and just the everyday problems of running a theme park.

Update *23/7/15

Having finished university for the summer I decided to go hunt down some anime only to find a new OVA of Amagi. It was delightfully mad as the series. Which all the best characters at the least featuring in a cameo as the park attempts to run its day to day operates. With the added bonus of people having to switch up some roles and failing at it, having to compete at an annual fight to the death *coughs* perform at a kindergarten and arrange a birthday party. The OVA manages to capture the light hearted but wacky nature of the series and I hope it gets renewed for the second season.

Standard anime tropes from this era. Bare in mind, I watched this anime soon after watching ‘DearS’ and ‘Chobits’, this anime was not all that everyone made it out to be. I am willing to admit I am more a Shounen person than a Shoujo but this. Okay, this anime was properly considerably better as a Shoujo then anything else. Enjoying a time when not every romance had to have a harem or ecchi scenes in it. This show was a fine anime. At best, I’d give it a silver.

So the plot. Well. I can remember the beginning and the end. So I guess I watched it all the way though, but considering I remember little else, I can’t say it was a brilliant story. It was a good story. Refreshingly light hearted even. Especially when compared with more die hard romances where they fall in love in five seconds flat. The story starts out with a recently rejected young man attending college who accidentally calls the Goddess Hotline. In this world, the Goddess’ are supposed to bring happiness to people and in order to this, Heaven has set up a hotline where people who are good but suffering misfortune can call up to make a wish. Yep, that’s a thing now. So how many of you can guess where this is going?

To be fair, the young man, Keiichi Morisato does not say ‘Stay with me forever’ because he actually wants the goddess, Belldancy too. He thinks this is all a joke. And is more than a little surprised when the wish is granted and Belldandy remains with him instead of going back to Heaven. This of causes a number of problems, first of which being housing as he lives in a male only dorm. Though everyday problems and not so everyday problems, (Belldandy has two sister who both show up to create more trouble), the two fall in love and eventually live happily ever after. After the big finale mind you but that would give the plot away. Kind of.

The story is an odd mix of cultures and ideas. Most of the ideas and names seem to come from Nordic and Celtic origins, which only make things stranger when put into context with the Japanese setting. Belldandy and Keiichi are a sweet couple. Both very pure hearted and do genuinely seem to fall for each other. Even with the rest of the cosmos seemingly trying to get in the way. Its just nothing overwhelming special to me. But remember it had been some time since I watched this. The outfits were pretty cool though.
