Kimi ni Todoke is a manga adaptation originally written by Karuho Shiina.
Why did I watch this anime? Well. I had just finished ‘Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge’ and was looking at the recommendations when this appeared. They are nothing alike but the main characters share one major characteristic. Which connect these two mangas together. Both main characters remind people of the ghost girl from the horror film “The Ring”.
Considering this is a shoujo anime, not really a good thing. Ignoring that the two animes are nothing alike but both are very amusing. Kimi ni Todoke is a cute, if not sometime trying romance anime about a naive but sweet girl and a boy who has fallen for her. Why trying? I often found myself yelling at them to just get together already! The pace is a little slow but that is part of the charm of it I guess. As anyone who has read my reviews before should know, I’m not that found of shoujo romances. Most of the romances I like are of the shounen variety. But I did enjoy this anime. It was quirky and had some fantastic characters.
Starting with our pure hearted heroine Kuronuma Sawako, who due to her unfortunate resemblance to the girl from the ring has the nickname Sadoko. Sawako is a very shy and socially awkward girl whose dream is simply to make friends. She is very kind and caring, always thinking of other first but rarely gets to chance to make friends due to her nerves. However as her kind nature comes out so does her ability to talk to her classmates. During the anime you watch her slowly come out of her bubble and bloom into a lovely young woman. Even if she does occasionally revert to over thinking situations and scaring everyone with her expressions.
Much of this is due to her having make friends with two class delinquents. Both girls get judged a lot for their attitudes and appearance. But Sawako genuinely doesn’t care and is just happy to make friends. Which endear her to them for life. The three girls relationship is similar to that of Tohru and her friends from Fruits Basket. Two ‘rough’ types and one very naive girl who occasionally needs protecting from the world around her. Which can be very cruel.
Then we have the love interest. Shouta Kazehaya. Kazehaya is outgoing and friends and yes, he has a fan club. One of the most popular boys in the school, Kazehaya fell in love with Sawako at the school entrance ceremony when she smiled at him under the cherry blossoms. Not clique at all right? But Kazehaya is in love with Sawako, but even when he admits it to her, she does not believe him. Leaving the poor boy to have to run around trying to convince her its true, while fending off other rivals.
This love story is full of twists and turns as the school body seemingly try to keep these two apart. From bullies and rumours, Kazehaya will have to fight if he wants to date Sawako. Not least because no one, including Sawako, believes he actually loves her. This is an cute anime to watch which does get very attached to the characters and makes you fun the same emotions they do.
I would argue though that it took far too long for the two to get together. But that might just be my opinion. So silver. I’m not likely to watch it again, but it was fun while the ride lasted.
