Sugar Sugar Rune
This anime has your standard shoujo characters. You have Chocolat, your loud and energetic type who tries her hardness but often fails to get the results she wants. She lovable but stubborn. Determined to win but often having a fool of herself in the process due to her temper scaring everyone. But her heart’s in the right place. Then we have her best friend and daughter of the current Queen, Vanilla. Vanilla is the quiet type who is good at everything she does. She clever, cute and shy. She collects hearts considerably easier than Chocolat but is conflicted as to who she wants to win. She also misses her mum a lot as her mum can only treat her as a candidate and not her daughter.
The main plot of the story is the two girls competing to become queen. How do they do this? Simple. When someone falls in love, their heart turns into a rune of varying quality depending on how deep they fell. The girls collect these hearts from people in the human world which are used to fuel the magical kingdom. But Chocolat breaks a massive rule. A witch can collect as many hearts as she wants but she must never let her own heart be taken.
Chocolat falls in love. To make matters worse, the boy who is capturing her heart is not a human, nor someone from the same kingdom as her. No, Pierre is prince of the ogres, a rebel fraction who split from the kingdom before Chocolat her born.
This anime is one of my favourite magical girl animes because while it has the basic formula of most, it is incredibly entertaining and funny. This show is very much a comedy and the girls make fantastic characters. The ending is heart warming and I fully recommend it. Gold.
