Kamigami no Asobi is the next in line a recent trend of making animes from dating simulator games. Amnesia and Diabolic Lovers, being two other examples of this particular type. Namely one girl and 6+ hot guys to pick from. The different between this one and Amnesia and Diabolic Lovers is, this one is actually quite good. The girl, Yui, actually has a back bone and is willing to stand up for herself. Which is more than a lot of anime heroines.
The plot is pretty standard. In this case, Yui gets chosen by Zeus to help teach certain gods how to love humans before the world ends. In this line up we get Hades, Dionysus and Apollo(n) from Greek mythology, Balder, Loki and Thor from the Nordics. From the Japanese gods we get Takeru and Tsukito. Oh! Also for their teacher they get Thoth from the Egyptian. Anbis also makes an appearance occasionally as another classmate. Thor and Dionysus aren’t actually love interests but are there more to be fill in characters, still its an interesting mix of mythologies they went for.
The gods are a mix of personalties, normally reflecting their counterparts. Someone did their research before making this show! Loki is playful and mischievous and also destined to kill Balder. Still they are best friends so. Thor is arguably more out of character due to his stoic nature but given Marvel’s take on ‘Thor’ it is an interesting contrast. Not going to lie, the Nordics are normally the ones to bring the lever down to gloom. Which is odd given Hades is the the super emo and angst one. Why? Plot.
Yes, there is plot. Its cute, funny and a little sad.But there. And its not all about romance! Sure there is flirting. Often bad flirting. There are also some fan service scenes. But a lot of the story line is more Yui trying to help the god overcome their own problems, and getting the others to help and make friends. There is a lot of bromance and adorable scenes in this anime. Jealousy as well. But not always for the reason you would first assume.
All in all, this anime is special if only because it is the first of its kind I have actually enjoyed. Most times when I see boys with cool designs, the female character is awful and I don’t want to watch the show. Yui was a well written female led and I hope some other series take a leaf out of this one’s book. Likely not, but one can hope!
